00:00Give my instruction like a rule.
00:02So, ear on up. It's gonna be good.
00:04Ear on up. It's gonna be good.
00:06Protect yourself at all time. Listen to my command.
00:08Touch gloves. Good luck.
00:12I'm gonna let y'all know right now.
00:14Do not leave
00:16where you're seated right now.
00:18Sitting right now at home.
00:20Matthew is a
00:22bad young man. I'm gonna let y'all
00:24know right now. He's gonna be one
00:26to watch.
00:28Right off
00:30the gate with that jab.
00:32That's what I like to see. Fundamentals.
00:34Fundamentals. Off the jab. Chin tucked.
00:36I like to see his chin
00:38tucked a little bit more.
00:40Good footwork. Good movement.
00:42Left and right. Quick hands. Combinations.
00:44And also punching power.
00:50Matthew gives you so
00:52many different looks. He's on a three fight
00:54knockout streak. He's quick. He's explosive.
00:56Adaptable. Fun to watch.
00:58I think that's gonna be the theme from here
01:00on out with the fighters we
01:02have leading to our main event.
01:04And you know
01:06what weight he's at, right?
01:08168 pounds.
01:10And this one took place at
01:12light heavyweight, Tim, but he's a guy who can
01:14make 68. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:16Because even Gallivar is a fighter who
01:18alternates from light
01:20heavyweight to super middleweight.
01:22He's very doable. Very doable
01:24fighter. Knows how to hide in there.
01:26Knows just much
01:28resistance is needed as he gets
01:30back sometimes.
01:32Throwing counters like that down to
01:34the body.
01:36Remember how earlier we had a guy who worked
01:38at the slaughterhouse?
01:40Yes.
01:42This guy owns
01:44a butcher shop.
01:46He looks like a butcher.
01:48But he doesn't work as a butcher though.
01:50But he owns the butcher shop.
01:52Right, right, right.
01:54See, one of the things that I want to see from
01:56Matthew is I want him to see you keep his chin
01:58tucked. You know, he keeps that
02:00chin exposed a little bit too much for my liking.
02:02Keep that thing down in your
02:04chest.
02:06You know, a lot of guys
02:08they don't like to peak
02:10and look up, look out.
02:12However, all it
02:14takes is one shot with those
02:1610 ounce gloves right on the chin.
02:18On the point of the chin and it lights out.
02:20Yo, what's up with
02:22the way Galavar is wearing
02:24his trunks, man? It's like he's got the thing
02:26tucked in like an old grandpa.
02:28No, those are his tights, man. He's got the
02:30tights on. Are they? Yeah, they look like
02:32tights to me. That's how tight they are.
02:34I think like the band that usually
02:36is where it says Wilkins. He ain't got
02:38no band. No, he don't have a band
02:40at all. But Galavar, he ain't
02:42worried about that. Galavar is just here to make a mess
02:44out of me too. That's all.
02:46He's just here to just ruck and make a mess
02:48out of him.
02:50Nasty. This
02:52is where things get
02:54crazy.
02:56But Galavar,
02:58he ain't been stopped. He has
03:00actually. Rolando Mancilla stopped him
03:02in June 2018.
03:04That's the only time. You have to go way
03:06back, Tim. That's a long time ago. Yeah.
03:08But since then, he's fought everybody.
03:10He's fought everybody.
03:12The who's who.
03:14Undefeated Mehmet Unal,
03:16the Turkish Olympian
03:18Pablo Corso was undefeated. Franco
03:20Acosta was 13-0 and 1.
03:22So he's been in match tough.
03:24Yes.
03:28Let's take a look at the left.
03:30That was landed
03:32here early in this fight. Yeah, he's been trying to land
03:34that. He came out trying to land that shot.
03:36As you see, Galavar
03:38just, his hands were
03:40extended. Mathieu just throwing
03:42it right where he's at. Look at this.
03:44Leading
03:46with that left hook.
03:48Galavar thought a jab
03:50was coming. Mathieu had caught him with
03:52a couple of jabs.
03:54Nice change up with the lead.
03:56Left hook, right
03:58on the chin, right on the money.
04:00Was he able to hold his balance
04:02there? Yeah, just momentarily
04:04hold his balance. He didn't go down. I respect
04:06that, but what I'm saying is that you get
04:08your opponent used to
04:10seeing that jab and then you surprise
04:12him with something else.
04:14So that shot right there, it looked like
04:16it was going to be a jab, but then he turned
04:18it into a hook. Confused
04:20Galavar. I mean, but you've got
04:22to have hand speed, you've got to have athleticism
04:24to be able to pull it off. And timing.
04:26Timing, timing, timing. And range.
04:28Tim, you can't do that when you're in a vulnerable
04:30spot. No, you can't.
04:32You've got to be just close enough
04:34to be able to land that shot.
04:36And he's trying to set it up again. There it is.
04:38I was going to say, he's picking down low. If you're picking
04:40down low, guess what? Something's going to come up eventually.
04:42And he came up with that
04:44left hook. That's his money punch right there.
04:46Yeah.
04:48Got a great left hook. Started boxing at
04:50age 10. His father was a boxer.
04:52And was the Canadian
04:54national champion.
04:56Look at them. They both
04:58battling up front with the jab hands.
05:00Although they're not southpaws.
05:02Just looking for opportunities, trying to create
05:04things again off that jab. Creating that
05:06distance.
05:08Or controlling that distance in between.
05:12See, a lot of times, guys, they allow
05:14that distance to be, you know, unoccupied.
05:16And
05:18they have no control right there.
05:20You always want to have some sort of control.
05:22Either with your opponent's eyes, whatever it is.
05:24You want to be able to move them. So if you
05:26poke that jab out there, you're fishing
05:28for something. You can anticipate
05:30something's eventually going to come back. And that's when you
05:32set your counters up. But if nothing comes
05:34back, you're still keeping your opponent
05:36at bay. And you're controlling
05:38the range at which you want to be at.
05:40And then you're able to land that overhand right like
05:42Matthew was able to land there after
05:44setting him up with so many
05:46left hands. Pretty much that's the first right
05:48that he's thrown to the
05:50head. Now a combination left
05:52uppercut. You see the combinations.
05:54And I love the body, the physique.
05:56You know, look at the strength of the young man.
05:58Of Methu.
06:00I was thinking
06:06the same thing as
06:08he started to throw that combination.
06:10How different those 168 pounds
06:12look or 170 plus.
06:14In this case.
06:16Look at his legs. Look at his strong legs
06:18as well. That's where
06:20he's getting his power from.
06:22But it's rare when you have the
06:24speed, the reflexes,
06:26and the combinations
06:28and the punching power all
06:30in one package.
06:32It's a rarity.
06:36Again,
06:38Galavar is a guy
06:40that can take. He can take and he can
06:42take. You know, he's gonna be here
06:44and he knows how to hide. He knows how to survive
06:46in there.
06:48He's not giving much resistance right now to Methu
06:50because of speed difference.
06:52He's getting beat to the punch.
06:54He's getting hit with everything. And Methu
06:56knows how to control distance and range.
06:58And that's what he's struggling with right now.
07:00He's hoping that he would fall in
07:02so he can land something on him.
07:04But Methu is standing underneath
07:06himself, not rushing it.
07:08Taking his time and placing
07:10his shots. Yeah, that stick really has
07:12Galavar biting on those
07:14feints.
07:20You know, it's crazy because Galavar
07:22is usually more active.
07:24He spooked
07:26just by the posturing
07:28of Methu. The speed again.
07:30That power. Spooked.
07:32Talk about spooking opponents. How about
07:3414-0
07:36Abdullah Mason. Last time
07:38we saw him was in Newark, New Jersey
07:40July the 6th. And
07:42like he always does, he stole
07:44the show. This time against
07:4626-fight veteran
07:48Luis Lebron.
07:50And you just saw him working out of that south
07:52post stance, setting up his punches.
07:54That left hook froze Lebron
07:56and sent him down with a delayed reaction.
07:58And then there was a right hook
08:00sending him down again. The flurry
08:02of punches and as clean
08:04a finisher as there is in the game right
08:06now. Phenomenal
08:08finisher. And if you notice, he has
08:10a full arsenal. He can hurt you with
08:12the left hand, the uppercut, body shots,
08:14right hooks. I mean, he can hurt you with any
08:16punch in his arsenal. And that's what makes
08:18him different. That adds to
08:20what we've all been talking about.
08:22That this kid is going to be the next
08:24or could be a future pound-for-pound
08:26number one fighter in the game.
08:28And we're seeing the gauze
08:30white wrap bandages.
08:32And Mike Basil, who's doing the
08:34wrapping job on Abdullah Mason, told
08:36me that the commission
08:38here in Quebec City does not
08:40allow for the
08:42Stitch Duran and the
08:44other types of branded
08:46tape. So you gotta
08:48just use regular white tape
08:50and gauze. No fancy tape.
08:52No fancy tape and
08:54just whatever they give to every
08:56fighter here, everybody's on an even
08:58playing field. Oh, that's nice.
09:00Yeah, that's nice.
09:02I mean, I don't know how much of a difference the tape makes.
09:04I know they put a lot, they invest a lot in the quality
09:06of it and what they do with it.
09:08Yeah, I get the tape. I mean, the tape
09:10does, it protects the hand.
09:12That's what it's all about, protecting the fist.
09:14Protecting the knuckles, but
09:16they don't give the gauze, do they?
09:18You can bring your own gauze or they have to
09:20give you the gauze. I don't know about them
09:22giving it to you. I know that you cannot
09:24stack it and you cannot create
09:26the pad apart
09:28from the
09:30way you're wrapping it. So sometimes
09:32they build the pad first and they
09:34put it on the hand. This time
09:36you have to build the pad as you're wrapping.
09:38So a lot of different regulations here
09:40with the hand wraps
09:42in Quebec City.
09:44And a lot of different counters that's landing
09:46for me too. Yes, sir.
09:48On Gala Ball.
09:50Starting to let his right hand go a lot more than he did
09:52earlier on in the fight.
09:58See him dipping? You see him dipping on his left hook?
10:00That was a weight transfer.
10:02He's dipping. He's dipping right in front of that left hook.
10:04There it is.
10:08Hear the fans
10:10yelling, Matthew, Matthew.
10:14Good shot.
10:16Good shot right there. Right on the belt line for Matthew.
10:20Coming out of Underdogs
10:22boxing in Montreal.
10:24Trained by Mike Moffa.
10:26You just see the skill and the power
10:28of a fighter.
10:30You see the durability. Yes.
10:32Gala Ball, I'm telling you.
10:34Veteran. You know, some guys you just can't
10:36knock out, man. Hard to
10:38knock out. He's one of those guys.
10:40Weight difference too. He came in at 180.9.
10:42Matthew came in at 178
10:44pounds. Will be a contender at
10:46light heavyweight, but
10:48still one of those situations where
10:50weight matters.
10:52It allows
10:54Gala Ball to take those shots.
10:56Take a little bit, yes.
10:58A little bit more durability.
11:00Don't necessarily make the
11:02chin stronger. No.
11:04However, he can absorb more
11:06punishment.
11:09And this is a good little
11:11challenge for Matthew. It's a challenge
11:13with yourself.
11:15How disciplined can you be?
11:17And can you solve the puzzle?
11:19Can you get him up out of there?
11:21So he had to do something different.
11:23He kind of squared up into that southpaw stance
11:25to try to land that hook
11:27on Gala Ball. Nice flurry
11:29of punches here in the third
11:31round for Wilkins
11:33Matthew. We're halfway
11:35through this fight. Things are starting to
11:37heat up for the fighter out of Montreal,
11:39Canada. And our own
11:41Marc Chinook with a translation
11:45in the red corner.
11:55How do you feel?
11:57I feel good. I feel good.
12:08Get in and out. Pop, pop.
12:10Get in and out.
12:12Keep your hands up. Tight defense.
12:18You look good.
12:22Oh, he said it in English too.
12:28You can finish this thing.
12:30You know what you're doing.
12:34If the chance is there, I'm going to take it.
12:37You look good.
12:39You know how to end this thing.
12:43Don't wait. Keep going.
12:45So Mike Mafa said,
12:47Marc Chinook's not the only guy in this
12:49building that can speak French and
12:51Anglais.
12:53Thank you very much
12:55to Marc Chinook for adding
12:57translator to his duties tonight.
12:59Man, Gala Ball got to do something,
13:01man. He's definitely in survival mode.
13:03He's usually in there
13:05trying to win. He just doesn't show up.
13:07Seemingly he's looking for a paycheck,
13:09but tonight he's just
13:11outgunned, man. He feels that speed and
13:13that power coming from Mathieu.
13:15What a right hand.
13:17That is
13:19where Mathieu excels. Once
13:21he feels that he's got you,
13:23he goes after you
13:25relentlessly, and
13:27this is what Gala Ball will have to
13:29deal with. Mathieu just slapping
13:31Gala Ball around our ring, man.
13:33Showing him I'm the boss.
13:35I am
13:37the boss. And Gala Ball has shown
13:39the ability to take a headshot, so
13:41the body work might be
13:43something he needs to work on here, but
13:45how high are the trunks of
13:47Gala Ball? I mean,
13:49he's like the grandpa.
13:51They're near his nipples.
13:53No, seriously.
13:55Look at it. It's already in the center of
13:57his dang belly. Oh,
13:59what a right uppercut from Mathieu.
14:01Oh, yeah. You can have them trunks up there. I'll just put
14:03the guard right. You have the high guard up.
14:05You can punch. Always punch through the guard.
14:07You punch around it.
14:09There's holes in that high guard.
14:11Most fighters just believe that, hey,
14:13if I'm up in the high guard, I'm going to block
14:15shots. No, that's not true.
14:17It's not true.
14:19Those gloves are strong. Nice left
14:21hook. And they will
14:23find the scene.
14:27What a shot.
14:29That's the type of shot that
14:31could stop him because he's taking the head
14:33shots well, but once you start
14:35to make him think about those body
14:37shots, that's where
14:39you excel. And there's a right uppercut and Gala Ball
14:41has to hold on for the first time in the fight.
14:43Hey, this kid is something else, man.
14:45I'm telling you right now.
14:47He is something else.
14:49He's going to be a problem.
14:51He's athletic. He's powerful.
14:53He's smart. And he's
14:55figuring things out on the fly.
14:57Exactly. That's my point.
14:59He's figuring out to open up
15:01how to open up a fighter that's
15:03defensive, that doesn't really
15:05want to be there, that's in survival mode,
15:07that has experience, that knows
15:09how to survive and hide inside that ring.
15:13Now you see him in the southpaw stance
15:15trying to give a different look.
15:19But the thing that you don't understand about
15:21Mathieu is that, and I've seen him on film,
15:23is he can create off the front foot.
15:25You see how aggressive he is.
15:27Pressing forward, creating his offense
15:29for himself. But he also can do it off the back foot.
15:31And he can do it from the southpaw stance
15:33as well. Like he hasn't opened up
15:35his full bag just yet.
15:37It's going to take someone to bring it out of him.
15:41The fact that Gala Ball has got his
15:43hands in his pockets because all he's doing is
15:45defending doesn't help
15:47that part. But tonight,
15:49Christian and Billy, he's in our main event.
15:51He throws 59 power punches per round
15:53when the division average is 29.
15:55He lands 37 punches a round
15:57when the division average is 15.
15:59He says that aggressiveness mirrors the boxer
16:01he looked up to when he first laced up the gloves.
16:07I discovered
16:09boxing in France when I was
16:1115 years old.
16:13My favorite fighter ever
16:15is Mike Tyson. For me,
16:17he was a monster. All his fights
16:19were war.
16:21He knocked out everybody.
16:23Who in this world has any chance against this man?
16:25In the beginning,
16:27I was watching
16:29Mike Tyson's videos. I was watching
16:31Mike Tyson's fights,
16:33doing the same moves. I think
16:35I have a small style
16:37like Mike Tyson. My style, I think,
16:39is a very aggressive,
16:41early attack, spectacular boxer.
16:43He also lands
16:4550.5% of power punches
16:47while his opponents land only
16:4927.2%. That means
16:51that not only is he a prolific
16:53offensive punching power machine,
16:55but he's defensively responsible
16:57for the most part.
16:59He sure is. His offense
17:01is his defense.
17:03Man, some spit just flew
17:05down in my eye. You got some
17:07Facundo Galavar DNA
17:09for me.
17:11Facundo Galavar DNA
17:13for free. I'm going to wipe it on you.
17:15Please don't.
17:17Man.
17:19Did it get on your ring too? No.
17:21One of your rings? Almost in my damn eye,
17:23man.
17:25You're the ring collector now.
17:27Oh, man.
17:29Yes.
17:31And Matthew
17:33wants to collect another victory at the hands
17:35of Facundo Nicolás Galavar,
17:37who made his way all the way over here
17:39to Argentina.
17:41He started boxing at age 14,
17:43but that was after
17:45practicing kickboxing and kung fu.
17:47Well, he's going to need some kung fu moves right now
17:49to turn this fight around.
17:51I'm telling you, he wish he could kick
17:53Matthew in the head and do something.
17:55Hey, that's the only way
17:57to get him up. Those hands are not
17:59working.
18:01Right?
18:05Again, you know, Matthew,
18:07you've got to stay disciplined.
18:09I'm picking. I'm picking.
18:11There's nothing coming back at him, but I'm picking.
18:13You've got to do it right.
18:15You want to build good habits.
18:17Look at the opposite hand
18:19down. That can
18:21become a problem. I'm telling you.
18:25The light heavyweights can crack, Tim.
18:27It's just anybody. It's a shot
18:29that you don't see. It's a place shot.
18:31The guy just throws, closes his eyes.
18:33You throw a shot at the same time,
18:35and it just catches you on that side.
18:37You don't even see it coming, and you're laid out.
18:39You're saying, oh my gosh, what just happened?
18:41You've got to create those great fundamentals.
18:43Those great habits.
18:45And Matthew, he's not having a problem.
18:47He's not having a problem with this, man. I get it.
18:49However, I'm just thinking
18:51moving forward, it's very important.
18:53Nice body shot there
18:55from Calabar.
18:57Few and far between, and I think that's
18:59the most impressive part of the way
19:01Matthew is putting in the work
19:03because he's been hit very...
19:05Look at his face.
19:07There's sparring sessions where you come off
19:09worse for wear than what Calabar
19:11has been able to do against him as Matthew leaps
19:13in with the left hook. Yeah, Matthew doesn't feel
19:15threatened at all.
19:17Sometimes with fighters, we don't feel threatened.
19:19We're okay
19:21making mistakes.
19:23I feel that it's okay. Yeah, again.
19:25Again, yes. You start to develop that.
19:27You have to understand that
19:29the environment you're in
19:31right now is not going to...
19:33That was nasty.
19:35That was nasty. He dipped underneath
19:37that and came in at the same time.
19:39Nice drop step coming right up with the
19:41left hook coming around that guard.
19:43And you know what? Matthew has to
19:45be conscious. Look at what's in front of him
19:47and say, okay, I know what this fight
19:49is about. This is not
19:51the level of the elite
19:53fight heavyweight.
20:02This is the last round, son.
20:13His left hand is landing.
20:15He needs to find a way.
20:17I'm trying to hold him too.
20:21All you got to do is
20:23stay standing for three more minutes.
20:27All right. Well, he's going to have to
20:29wade through
20:31his left hand power from
20:33Wilkins Matthew.
20:35Moving in right there, coming up
20:37with the double jab of right hand, but look how
20:39he just dipped underneath that shot and just created
20:41that angle from the position he was in.
20:43He shortened that shot up.
20:47That's some clean stuff right there,
20:49man. That is beautiful work right there from Matthew.
20:51You know, to see that shot,
20:53to dip underneath, have his eyes
20:55still up, looking at his opposition,
20:57understanding that his head is going to be right there
20:59and then place that shot in real time.
21:01That is good work right there
21:03from the young Matthew.
21:05Dip and pop from Wilkins Matthew,
21:07looking for his tenth professional win,
21:09taking on Facundo Nicolás Galovar,
21:11who made the trip from
21:13Argentina. It's been a three-fight losing
21:15skid. Looks like Matthew
21:17can make it four, but can he make it
21:19a memorable,
21:21impressive victory here?
21:23Yeah, he got to hit that, man, I mean,
21:25got to hit that liver.
21:27You got Galovar, he's
21:29keeping that right hand tucked. He
21:31knows where his liver is, and he's saying, no, you're
21:33not hitting that. No, sir.
21:35He's like, I might have a little bit of extra padding,
21:37but it still hurts, and I've seen how
21:39hard you hit. You look at the back of Galovar
21:41and you see that there is
21:43some damage from those body shots.
21:45Rope marks, too, on his back.
21:47But Matthew is
21:49changing the speed up. He's trying to be creative
21:51with the attack right there, hit behind
21:53the head on Galovar, but
21:55a lot of times when you get
21:57guys that are veterans like this, you try to be
21:59creative. You try to
22:01make yourself look vulnerable in spots
22:03to be able to open your opponent up.
22:05He's doing everything he can. He's going for
22:07the stoppage.
22:13Right now,
22:15you saw him change
22:17guards right there. He went kind of like in a
22:19Mayweather shell
22:21for a minute.
22:23Again, he's trying
22:25everything right now.
22:29And that's what you
22:31want to see from a young fighter.
22:33Work on your bag, man. Exactly.
22:35You got to work on your bag. Again, he was out of position
22:37right there when he stepped straight back.
22:39Something he got to work on.
22:45Body work once again,
22:47and Galovar is forced to
22:49hold for a moment.
22:53Southpaw stands down.
22:55Back to orthodox
22:57for Mathieu. Galovar
22:59again, told you, veteran.
23:01Knows how to hide.
23:03Do a left
23:05hook right there just to bag up Mathieu.
23:15How impressed are you with Mathieu?
23:17Are you impressed with him? You think he's something else?
23:19Think he's going to be something? I like him.
23:21Look, I know what you're going to get in
23:23a guy like Facundo Galovar.
23:25He's going to be hard to get out of there because
23:27he's rugged. He's big.
23:29So, you're not going to get everybody
23:31out of there, but I see the tools
23:33in Wilkins Mathieu.
23:35He's got to work on his power
23:37apparently against a bigger guy like that
23:39because that's what you're going to face in this
23:41weight class. I'd like to see him at
23:4368 to be honest.
23:47Man, he threw a wide left
23:49hook right there. Left his chin up in the air.
23:51That's the only thing that I don't like, man.
23:53That chin got to be tucked a little bit more.
23:55Occasionally he drops, well, on most
23:57occasions he drops the opposite hand when he's shooting
23:59the shot.
24:01He definitely has some special characteristics
24:03about him that I like.
24:05And if he continues to nourish those
24:07special characteristics, man, he's going to be
24:09a problem in the 168 pound
24:11weight class if he goes down that low.
24:13And I think that's the key. He's only
24:1519 years old, so if he's at 75
24:17it only gives him two more weight classes to
24:19move up, I think.
24:21Work a little harder.
24:23I'm trying to figure out, is he that 19
24:25year old that's kind of
24:27matured?
24:29Physically matured
24:31already? Or is it more?
24:33Is it more? Is he going to get
24:35stronger moving forward?
24:37Sometimes you get these 19 year olds like Mike
24:39Tyson that's just a freak.
24:41A freak animal, right?
24:43Is he that guy?
24:45Four years from now, three years from now,
24:47will he be the guy that's going to take over the division?
24:49I mean, there's not a lot of body fat
24:51either, Tim, when you look at his physique.
24:53No, it's not.
24:55I look at the skill level.
24:57I look at the defense, of course.
24:59The jabs.
25:01Most of the fundamentals.
25:03Making sure you got that master like that right there.
25:05That's cutting time
25:07at its finest. Rolling under and then coming
25:09with the same shot.
25:11The momentum going with the shot.
25:13That's some good stuff right there.
25:15Look at him. He look like a little Ali, right?
25:17Young Ali, right?
25:19Good looking kid. Great physique.
25:21Good skills.
25:23This is for the first time
25:25since we saw him last
25:27against Jose Arias, January 13th
25:29on the Better Be A Undercar.
25:31Let's send it up to Mark Schoenuck
25:33for the decision.
25:35After a six-round here at the
25:37Centre Videotron, we're going to the
25:39judges' scorecards for the official decision.
25:41Richard Ducaravelle, Guy Girard,
25:43and David Therrien all scored the bout
25:4560-54.
25:47For your winner by
25:49unanimous decision,
25:51Wilkins Mathieu!
25:53All right.
25:55No doubt what was going to happen there.
25:57Wilkins Mathieu.
25:59All right.
26:01No doubt what was going to happen there.
26:03Wilkins Mathieu.
26:05All right.
26:07No doubt what was going to happen there.
26:09Wilkins Mathieu with the shutout
26:11win over the
26:13battle-tested Facundo
26:15Nicolás Galovar. Couldn't pull
26:17off the upset, but he did
26:19take Mathieu.
