00:00Why is the humble bee so associated with Manchester?
00:04Hi, I'm Theo with Manchester World and today I'll be explaining the origin of the bee and why it's become so synonymous with this city.
00:11Now, it actually originates back in Victorian times, where prominent trading cities would pick a coat of arms that would be able to represent it to foreign countries and allies in the trading game.
00:23Now, here in Manchester they settled on a globe with seven bees inside, which represented Manchester trading across all of the seven seas.
00:30But the bee itself is a worker bee, and the reason for that is very simple.
00:35Manchester was not a royal city, it wasn't the centre of governance, it was a hard-working place built by the workers.
00:42Those original Mancunians had to work hard to get this place thriving, as they still do now, and the bee represents that.
00:48And again, bees by themselves aren't very impressive, but allow them to swarm together and they can be a pretty impressive sight.
00:54So do you think that this is still the best logo for Manchester?
00:57Well, that's all we've got for now. Follow us at Manchester World for more.
