00:00The Sermon on the Mount
00:13After Jesus collected his disciples,
00:16he went everywhere healing the sick
00:19and teaching people how to live God's way.
00:23Get up and walk.
00:28He must have been super popular.
00:31He was.
00:32One time, so many people followed him,
00:36he had to stand up high on a hill
00:39so everyone could hear his special message
00:42we now call the Sermon on the Mount.
00:45Hey, I want to hear Jesus.
00:49Well, you're not the only one.
00:54Okay, I guess I'll just sit here.
00:58Blessed are the poor in spirit.
01:01The kingdom of God belongs to them.
01:05Blessed are those who are sad.
01:09They will be comforted.
01:12Blessed are those who don't put themselves first.
01:16They will receive the whole world.
01:19Do you understand what Jesus was teaching?
01:23I think I do.
01:25You think he was talking to people who were poor and sad?
01:29Yes. You see, Jesus was making a list.
01:33A list?
01:35A list of people who didn't have much.
01:38People who didn't use their strength to get their own way.
01:42People who tried to make peace when other people were fighting
01:46and probably got punched because of it.
01:50And yes, people who were sad.
01:53Jesus was listing people who usually ended up in the back of the line.
01:58Not anymore.
02:00In the kingdom of God, you will be the happiest of them all.
02:05Jesus was talking about God's kingdom
02:08where things are different than people were used to.
02:12It sure sounds different.
02:14Right. It sounded like an upside-down world.
02:19If you've been sad, you'll be happy.
02:22If you've been last, you'll be first.
02:25If you've tried to make peace, you will be the children of the King of Peace.
02:31God himself.
02:33Wow! The people that heard Jesus must have been so surprised.
02:37They were.
02:39I guess this means that the least important people here
02:42will be the most importantest in the kingdom of God.
02:47Wowie zowie!
02:50Hurray!
02:53That must have made everyone feel so special.
02:56It sure makes me feel special.
02:59And that's the point.
03:01Do you remember when the angels brought the message of Jesus' birth?
03:05They didn't go to kings and queens.
03:08The angels went to the stinky smelly shepherds out in the fields.
03:12You remembered.
03:14Now, what does that tell you about God's kingdom?
03:19Well, that is a super-duper different backwards upside-down kingdom.
03:25Yes.
03:26Wow! Jesus sure said some amazing things that day.
03:31Oh, and he wasn't finished.
03:34The law says people who hurt you should be punished.
03:38But I say, if someone hits you on the cheek,
03:42let them hit your other cheek too.
03:45Uh-oh.
03:47And if someone steals your shirt, you know what you should do?
03:52Give them your coat as well.
03:55Okay, I don't know if I like this anymore.
03:59The law says to love your neighbors.
04:02Uh-huh.
04:04But I say,
04:05Here he comes.
04:07You should love your enemies just as much.
04:11Okay, I think he's crazy.
04:14But Jesus wasn't crazy.
04:16He was teaching them a whole new way to live.
04:20The forever kind of life, lived with God, right?
04:24Right.
04:25You see, the old rules of Moses could only change what you did on the outside.
04:31They couldn't change who you were on the inside.
04:35I didn't come to make you do better things.
04:39I came to make you new.
04:43I came to make you the kind of person that I am.
04:47A new kind of person?
04:49Yep, a person with a new heart.
04:53A heart that loves everyone, just like God does.
04:58A heart that puts other people first.
05:01A heart like...
05:03A heart like Jesus' heart.
05:05You got it.
05:07Come to me, all of you who are tired, worn out, and weighed down by the rules.
05:14I am here to give you rest.
05:18I am here to make you a new person.
05:22Preaching the Sermon on the Mount that day,
05:25Jesus invited everyone into a new kind of life.
05:29A life that wasn't about rules, but a life about relationship.
05:35A life with Jesus that can change us from the inside out.
