00:00Here in Kolkata, women are marching for what they say is to reclaim the night.
00:05Marching candles and chanting slogans.
00:07They're demanding justice for a young female doctor
00:10brutally raped and murdered in one of the city's government hospitals last week.
00:15Whether it's a nurse or a doctor,
00:17whatever happened that night, someone needs to take responsibility.
00:21What we want is justice given to a fellow resident who was brutally murdered
00:27and also a central protection for the protection of the doctors
00:31so that there is no further incident happening in future.
00:34The tragedy took place on the night shift whilst the 31-year-old victim worked,
00:39after she'd taken a break from her 36-hour shift to sleep on a carpet in a seminar room,
00:44where her body was found bearing multiple injuries.
00:47Many government hospitals have suspended services nationwide in protest
00:51and demonstrations have erupted across the country.
00:54Here in the capital, women are frustrated about the lack of measures keeping them safe.
01:00The victim's family deserves justice as soon as possible
01:03and the most severe punishment awarded.
01:06There should be a federal probe because its important rapists are scared to do this.
01:14That hospital claims to be one of Asia's biggest private hospitals.
01:18If security can be breached there, then that's not good enough.
01:23The event has drawn parallels with the 2012 New Delhi Nirbhaya case
01:27that triggered sweeping changes in laws protecting women
01:30after a 23-year-old was gang raped and murdered on a moving bus.
01:34The case has been transferred to the country's Central Bureau of Investigation.
