00:00It's an announcement that will come as a relief for many living in the DRC,
00:03which has seen a surge in mpox cases, as well as further refilled.
00:07On Friday, the director general of the WHO said that vaccines against the disease
00:12would soon arrive in the country.
00:15On the vaccines, some of the vaccines will arrive in the next few days in DRC.
00:24He added that he believes that the outbreaks in Africa can be stopped in the next six months.
00:30According to another WHO official, tens of thousands of doses,
00:34including some donated by Danish drugmaker Bavarian Nordic, are ready to be dispatched.
00:40So what we understand right now is from HERA that they have procured 175,000 doses of
00:47MVABN vaccine. In addition, the manufacturer Bavarian Nordic is donating another 40,000
00:56doses to these quantities that we understand are immediately available to be dispatched
01:03to affected regions.
01:06Earlier in August, the organisation declared the disease a global public health emergency
01:11after an outbreak in the DRC that spread to nearby countries, including Burundi.
01:16This year, more than 18,000 suspected cases have been recorded in the DRC,
01:20with more than 600 deaths, sparking concern among residents.
01:24People here are beginning to be afraid of this epidemic, but there's already a cure so it's OK.
01:33We want them to give us more vaccines so that this disease disappears completely.
01:39Mpox has been identified in Africa since 2022, but the current outbreak has seen a surge in
01:45cases caused by clade 1A and 1B, which are more serious strains. Cases of the disease have also
01:51been reported beyond the African continent, including in Sweden, where a case was detected
01:56earlier this month.
