00:49And what are you gonna do for us tonight I'm gonna do a little bit of magic magic. Yes, sir
00:56And why AGT because this is the greatest stage ever
01:05Thank you, so I'm tear if you could actually come out here for a second
01:10So before I came out here on stage
01:12I emailed Terry some pictures from the most magical day of my life now
01:16He hasn't looked at the pictures yet, but Terry I just want you to confirm that you did in fact get that email from me
01:21Let's see. Okay. Yes, I did. All right, perfect
01:25So, um, I believe there are two kinds of magic
01:28the first is the kind that you guys see performed on stages like this, but there's a second kind and
01:34It's the most real and it's the most powerful magic that exists
01:39It's the magic that happens when one individual makes a decision to positively impact another human life forever
01:45And so my goal tonight is to combine these two kinds of magic starting with Heidi Heidi in front of you
01:51You have some flashcards. You can see they're just pictures of all different kids toys. Yep
01:56Can you flip that pile over and give it a little bit of a mix?
02:01Beautiful you're professional for the last year I've been learning beautiful
02:06That's perfect
02:07What I'm gonna have you do is I'm gonna have you cut to a random card and hold that against your chest
02:12So you don't see what you cut to yet. Cool Sofia in front of you is a calendar from February of 2020
02:18Can you pick up that marker and I want you to mark any day that you want
02:23Howie yeah, I want you to give me a random last name the first last name that pops into your mind Smith Smith
02:31Can you write down Smith on that piece of paper in front of you? Okay
02:37And Simon I'm gonna have you write down a time make it pretty random the other judges can see what you write
02:43But it's important that I don't okay while he's doing that Terry
02:47What would you say is like one word one inspiring word that you kind of carry with you that sums up your heart and your
02:54passion
02:55Power power. I love that power. Can you just keep that in mind?
03:00Yeah, so, um as you guys saw I have my wife and my son here. Our son Xander is our world
03:08Um
03:13We actually adopted him when he was about two months old
03:26He was he was in a he was in a pretty rocky situation
03:30And uh the day that his birth mom asked if we would raise her little boy changed my life forever
03:37But uh, there's a long legal process when it comes to adoption
03:40And so the most magical day of my life was the day that we stood before the judge
03:44And for the first time he pronounced our son Xander Dre
03:48Tavella an official and permanent part of our family
03:53Afterwards the the judge was super cool. And uh, he gave Xander this little guy
03:59Heidi in the beginning you you spread through those cards you mixed them up. Yeah, and you cut to just one
04:04For the first time, can you look at the card that you cut to and show everyone else?

04:20So I sent you those pictures in the beginning. Yeah, can you go ahead and open that email? All right, I
04:26Think we're gonna bring them up on the screen. If you look at that first picture
04:30You'll see that's just us in the courtroom with the judge after he just approved us to be Xander's parents
04:36My son like most kids loves playing in cardboard boxes more than playing with the actual toy
04:41And so the next picture is a box that we had waiting for him when we got home
04:46Terry can you read out loud what's written on that box? It says on February 21st

05:14This was Xander's first moment home as an official member of our family

05:59Where somebody makes a decision to change someone's life forever no matter what it cost them

06:09The real hero of this story and the person that I want to honor is
06:12The woman who made the hardest decision that any mother could ever have to make

06:56My entire world changed when I became a father we adopted Xander when he was about two months old

07:27And then we got this phone call out of the blue asking if we would adopt Xander's older brother Silas

07:43When I was younger I grew up in a pretty broken home
07:48Now that I'm a parent I want to give both of them something different
07:53The thing that I love most about magic is its ability to show people that nothing is impossible
07:59Our decisions have the ability to create magical moments and because of that we see how lives can change and things can get better
08:06Tonight I want to be a role model for them. I'm gonna show my family what it means to chase your dreams

08:24I got to admit as cheesy as it might sound my life has felt like a deck of playing cards a deck that I
08:31Thought was gonna stay in
08:33This perfect order
08:36But life gets a little more messy than this as you guys just saw. I'm now the father of two adopted toddlers
08:47Thank you, if there's one thing that I've learned it's that some really incredible magic
08:52Can actually come from some of life's really messy
08:56moments
08:58How I made this book that we're gonna read in just a minute
09:04I made it to show us that no matter how messy things appear
09:08sometimes the cards

09:12exactly where they're supposed to

15:43I didn't know like do I keep pursuing my dreams as a magician and Carrie made me feel that
15:48No matter what sacrifices it took that I needed to keep pursuing the things that were on my heart
15:53I promise to always believe in you and your dreams to know that you have someone like that by your side
15:58It meant everything to me

24:54But as a 9-year-old kid
24:56Magic unexpectedly came into my life

25:05I never believed that I could make magic
25:08My career
25:09There's mommy smiling
25:11Mommy has a pretty smile, huh?
25:13But when I met Kari
25:15She encouraged me to live out my dreams
25:18As soon as we got married
25:20Kari got pregnant
25:21And at almost 4 months
25:24We lost that baby
25:26Everything seemed so helpless
25:28But at the exact same time that we were due to have that child
25:32Was when Xander came into our life
25:38I remember holding him for the first time
25:40And I didn't know anything could feel like that
25:43And then we adopted Silas, his older brother
25:47My wife and my boys
25:49Those unexpected moments
25:50I would consider the most real magic I've ever experienced
25:54I'm one performance away
25:56From possibly winning this competition
25:59And tonight, I want Xander and Silas to know
26:02You never have to stop chasing your dreams
26:05No matter how hard life gets
26:07There's always some kind of magic ahead of you

26:49My parents' marriage actually fell apart

27:03It was a person
27:05Someone stepped into my parents' lives
27:09Helped them get sober
27:11And back on their feet
27:13They helped put my family back together
27:16Simply because they cared

27:39As much as I'd love to just stand here

31:52Than what we might have ever expected
