Union No. 1 of Minera Escondida, in Chile, began a legal strike on Tuesday, after failing to reach an agreement with the Australian-based multinational BHP Billiton, located in the Antofagasta Region mountain range. teleSUR

00:07Through an official statement, the number one union of Minera Escondida, hidden mining
00:13in English, owned by the multinational BHP Beliteon, declared that the demands made by
00:20the workers were not accepted by the company.
00:23Due to the failure of both parties to reach a mutually beneficial agreement, the strike
00:27was voted by 99.8% of the 2,379 union members.
00:35The mobilized workers charge that the offer presented by the multinational was based on
00:40extension of working hours, loss of basic benefits such as food on site and increased
00:47operational demands, among other points.
