00:00And we're not live or anything, so even though it's recording there's no pressure really.
00:07Yeah.
00:08You can say you need to pause, you want to take a sip in between, quite anything like
00:09that, or you want to just stop and take a couple of tea notes, it's absolutely fine.
00:10So we're here today to just sort of reflect on what's happened over the last year, and
00:11also because, you know, we need people to come forward.
00:12Tell me a bit about BAM.
00:13BAM was fun-loving.
00:14Yeah.
00:15It was fun-loving.
00:16Yeah.
00:17Yeah.
00:18Yeah.
00:19Yeah.
00:20Yeah.
00:21Yeah.
00:22Yeah.
00:23Yeah.
00:25Yeah, it's really hard to get people to come forward.
00:32Tell me a bit about BAM.
00:34BAM was fun-loving person.
00:35Always liked to be out with his daughter and friends, playing pranks on people and messing
00:38them out.
00:39So do you got quite a good sense of humour.
00:40Oh, yeah.
00:41All the time, yeah.
00:42What sort of pranks did he play?
00:43It's like he'd have a water pistol and get you unawares, or even a bottle of water he'd
00:52talking to a mate out in his car and he'd just squeeze it and you know he'd get a few
00:59few words back you know. Tell me about Ben's daughter. She's very much like her dad,
01:07messes about and pranks and they come out with the same sort of sayings and stuff.
01:14She does very much. She does talk about him when she wants to,
01:20only when she wants to and then she'll tell you when she's had enough.
01:29He used to be a boxer years ago when he was 16, 17 and that. He did really well
01:36when nine out of ten fights. But it's a very strict sport so you can't go out with friends
01:45and that and he liked that going out with his friends so he gave it up after a bit.
01:52He liked all sorts of music. He liked a lot of his dad's music like Roy Orbison and Kenny Rogers
02:02and things like that. Was he a lot like his dad? He was, yeah. He'd help people out if they needed
02:11help. If they were in trouble he'd help anybody, even strangers he'd stick up for, things like that.
02:20So when you found out that Ben had passed away, can you tell me where you were and what was
02:30happening? I was in bed and the door knocked and I thought oh he's in late and then my partner
02:40went down and it was the police and I thought oh what's he done now, you know. And they came in and
02:47they asked me to sit down and that was when I kind of got an idea because set that sentence.
02:58When they said that he'd passed away I just didn't want to believe it and I said you know
03:05you can't, he can't have gone because his daughter's upstairs waiting for him.
03:13And I asked my other son to come with me to the hospital, yeah. Even now I don't know, I think I
03:22try and put it out my head because it hurts so much. I put it out my head but
03:28it's like last night I went outside and just looked down the corridor and it would be where
03:35he'd come back when he was coming in and I could you know like think you know he might come around
03:41in a minute, no he won't you know. And it's sort of like you just hope he'd come back but you know
03:49he's not going to. In a way it kind of hits you sometimes more than others you know.
03:57You know seven o'clock at night is a time when he comes back from work and
04:04when you have a text because he normally says what's for dinner, sort of you know like that and
04:15things like that yeah.
04:19Tell me about the weeks after that and leading up to the funeral, what was that like?
04:24Um that was that was very hard. I found my brain didn't work at all. I needed a lot of help from
04:33other people. A lot of his friends helped and most of most of the funeral was paid for by
04:41his friends. Yeah they all clubbed together for that, wanted to give him a good send-off.
04:48Got him the dearest coffin I could find. It's like a boxing coffin so something that he liked
04:55you know. The reason was because it wasn't um normal you know.
05:06It wasn't a normal sort of situation so I wanted it to be something special. Um he had boxing
05:14flowers and his names and a lot of the sayings that he used to say.
05:22He used to say he was starving a lot so he had a starving one done.
05:28And he he used to say to with his daughter can I get a yay and we had that on flowers as well.
05:37Yeah what song did he have? Um to go in we had um Ben by Michael Jackson.
05:45Um that's what he he was named after actually the film. Not not the rat on the film but the film.
05:54Um then we had um the Gambler because he used to sing that with his dad.
06:02Um and Ben would often sing that after his dad passed away. He'd sit and sing it and that.
06:09But uh very well attended was it? Oh yeah a lot a lot of people yeah.
06:15What did that mean to you as his mother to see all of those people there for him?
06:19Um to be honest I didn't look at anybody. I just looked in front of me. Um I knew there was a lot
06:26of people there. The only way I saw people was watching it back on on the YouTube you know.
06:34But I couldn't look at people because I was I don't know I had tunnel vision you know.
06:40Do you watch it back on you watch it back on YouTube more than once?
06:44Yeah yeah. Do you still do that now?
06:47I've got it um saved yeah and I had it saved as well for my mom who was in hospital she couldn't
06:55go. We're having toys made as well out of some of his clothes. Yeah I'm gonna get a bunny rabbit out
07:02made out of a suit. Phoning people was hard um because I didn't sit on the phone I just said I
07:08need you to come and come up. That was hard and they they took away before we said it you know
07:18because they didn't wanted to tell her in their own time you know. Don't don't hide these people
07:24um they need to pay for you know what they've done and so so we can get justice for Ben.
07:35Because when I go to his grave I say sorry to him that you know it's not been sorted yet but
07:42I would like to go there and say to him you know we've got them and and you've got justice now.
07:50It would it would mean a lot yeah it's it's very hard waiting and you know hoping
07:57that they'll get caught and it would it would be terrible if they didn't because they can't
08:04just walk around after what they've done. They knew they knew they had a weapon that
08:10could hurt someone you know it wasn't to scare someone it was to hurt someone so
08:16they need to pay for that and and you know so they don't hurt anyone else as well.
