Hospital services were disrupted in several Indian cities on Tuesday (Aug 13) after a doctors' protest spread nationwide following the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee medic in the city of Kolkata.

00:10following the rape and murder of a trainee medic in the city of Kolkata.
00:14The 31-year-old doctor was found dead on Friday.
00:17Police said she had been raped and murdered
00:19and a police volunteer was subsequently arrested in connection with the crime.
00:24We are rather thankful and grateful to the Honourable Court
00:28that the CBI has been now handed over the investigation.
00:31We also wanted the investigation to be monitored by the Honourable Court.
00:35Now the court has also directed the CBI to file periodic reports.
00:39During a press conference, West Bengal's Health Secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam
00:43also appealed to the protesting doctors, asking them to return to work.
00:48It is our appeal to the resident doctors that they,
00:51considering the commitment of the state government for proper investigation
00:56and the commitment given for their proper arrangements,
01:01they must return to their services,
01:03considering the commitment shown by the state government.
01:06A High Court in Kolkata has ordered the criminal investigation
01:09be transferred to India's Federal Police, the Central Bureau of Investigation,
01:14indicating that the authorities were treating the case as a national priority.
