Both sides of the debate over an AFL high performance centre for Rosny are celebrating yesterday’s poll results, each lauding the fact around half of residents voted their way. While the topic continues to generate contention on Hobart’s eastern shore, another council is quietly preparing for the possibility the development may head south instead.

00:00A slim majority, but the Clarence Mayor is calling it a huge win.
00:07It's fantastic to see that the community have spoken.
00:1151.4 per cent of more than 28,000 Clarence residents were in favour of an AFL training
00:17centre being built at the Rosney Park Lance, but 65 per cent didn't want it to extend across
00:24the road to the Charles Hand Park.
00:27I think what it says is that almost half the community has felt passionate enough to vote
00:32that they absolutely do not want high performance centres in either of Rosney's parks.
00:38She says the fight will continue.
00:41It's never time to back off from destruction and desecration, ever.
00:45Well, it's time to respect the vote.
00:48I mean, the vote's been had.
00:49We've had a $200,000 electoral poll.
00:51We've had a public meeting back on the 15th of May.
00:54People have had an opportunity to ventilate their respective views on this.
00:58The vote is non-binding.
01:00We'll now sit down with the state government.
01:01At the end of the day, it's their call.
01:03The other preferred site for the AFL high performance centre is here at the Twin Ovals
01:08in Kingborough.
01:09Geotechnical assessments have been carried out here and at Rosney, the results of which
01:14are yet to be released, but could sway the decision around where to put the centre.
01:19The mayor of Kingborough says Clarence councillors have a tough decision ahead.
01:23Look, I think if it was Kingborough who was in the same situation, I think our councillors
01:28would be looking at that vote very carefully and considering the fact that there was no
01:34huge majority either way, I think it has the potential to perhaps shift the conversation
01:40for some of those councillors who have been sitting on the fence in relation to whether
01:44it should be built at Rosney or not.
01:46The council has approved an NBL high performance centre in Kingborough, receiving only six
01:52submissions of concern.
01:54But I do hope that the Clarence City Council can make the AFL high performance centre work
01:58over at Rosney, but Kingborough does stand ready, willing and able.
02:03Labor says it's time for the government to get started on the $70 million project.
02:10The contract that Jeremy Rockleaf signed said it would be development approved by the end
02:13of this year and built by the end of next year.
02:15Well the clock is ticking.
02:17For now, the location is still up in the air.
