00:00Ocean Animals
00:10A little over 70% of our earth is covered by oceans.
00:15There are five oceans, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic.
00:23Within our oceans live thousands of plants and animals.
00:27Many of them haven't even been discovered yet.
00:30The deepest parts of the ocean have little or no plant life.
00:34That's because the energy from the sun cannot reach deep into the ocean and plants need
00:39sunlight to survive.
00:41However, there is an abundance of plant life or seaweed wherever the sun can reach.
00:48Seaweed is the name for many different types of algae and plants that grow in the ocean.
00:54Seaweed is a type of algae that floats on the surface of the water.
00:59Another type of algae in our oceans is called phytoplankton.
01:03It is extremely tiny but very important.
01:07Living organisms depend on phytoplankton for food.
01:11This plant gives off more oxygen than any other plant on earth.
01:17The largest ocean plant in the world is called kelp.
01:21Kelp grows very quickly and can reach up to 250 feet tall.
01:25It is usually brown, but some kelp can be very colorful.
01:30Seagrass is another type of plant.
01:33It grows in the shallow water of our oceans.
01:36It has roots and flowers.
01:39There are numerous plants in the ocean that are similar to algae and seaweed.
01:44Coral is another organism that lives in the ocean.
01:48Many people believe coral is a plant, but it is actually an animal.
01:54Coral has tentacles to capture small fish and zooplankton for food.
01:59Coral relies on the algae in the ocean to keep it alive.
02:04In return, the coral helps the algae to survive.
02:07The algae attached to the coral gives coral its beautiful colors.
02:12The ocean is the largest habitat for animals in the world.
02:17The animals of the ocean either live in the deep open sea or they live on both the land
02:23and in the water.
02:25Sea turtles and saltwater crocodiles, marine iguanas, and polar bears depend on the ocean
02:32for their food.
02:33There are also many seabirds that rely on the ocean for survival including penguins,
02:39pelicans, tern, albatross, puffins, gulls, and others.
02:47Not all these animals, birds, and plants live in or near the same oceans.
02:53Some of the oceans are very cold with parts covered in ice, while others are warm.
02:59Let's take a closer look at each of the five oceans and see how they're different and similar.
03:06The Pacific Ocean is located between North and South America and Asia and Australia.
03:13It is the largest ocean in the world.
03:17If we combine all the land on Earth, the Pacific Ocean would still be bigger.
03:23It is also the deepest of all oceans.
03:26It is 36,000 feet deep.
03:30The islands of Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, and New Zealand are in the Pacific Ocean.
03:38In fact, there are thousands of islands in the Pacific Ocean.
03:45Something cool about the Pacific Ocean is that there is an area of hundreds of active
03:49volcanoes under its surface called the Ring of Fire.
03:53The plant life in the Pacific Ocean is kelp, algae, and other seaweeds as well as seagrass.
04:01Sea urchins, snails, abalone, and crab also live in the Pacific Ocean.
04:09Seaweed gives smaller animals in the ocean a place to live and hide from larger animals
04:13and predators.
04:15The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest ocean.
04:19It is the saltiest of all the oceans.
04:22This ocean is between North and South America on one side and Europe and Africa on the other.
04:29The Atlantic Ocean is divided up into North and South Atlantic by the equator that runs
04:35through the middle of it.
04:37The water that is near the equator is warmer.
04:40Cape Verde, Canary Islands, and the Bahamas are islands in the Atlantic Ocean.
04:47Greenland is also in the Atlantic Ocean.
04:50It is the largest island on Earth.
04:53Something unique about the Atlantic Ocean is that there is mostly an underground mountain
04:58range that runs right through it called the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
05:02Dolphins, sea turtles, clownfish, coral, crab, and salmon live in the Atlantic Ocean.
05:12Larger fish like the bull shark and the blue whale also inhabit this ocean.
05:17The blue whale lives in saltwater oceans like the Atlantic.
05:21It can grow to be 110 feet long!
05:25The main plant life in the Atlantic Ocean is algae, seagrass, seaweed, and phytoplankton.
05:34The Indian Ocean is the third largest ocean.
05:38In order of the Indian Ocean are Africa, Australia, Iran, Pakistan, and India as well as Antarctica.
05:49Some of the marine life found in the Indian Ocean are sharks, whales, dolphins, and various
05:56sea turtles.
05:58Pomfret fish are found in both the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.
06:03Eels also have been found in this ocean.
06:07The Indian Ocean is the warmest ocean of the five, so not as much marine life is found
06:13there.
06:14Eelgrass and seagrass are common plants found in the shallow areas of this ocean.
06:21They are the food source for scallops, crabs, and many fish.
06:26Kelp, seaweed, and phytoplankton also live in these waters.
06:32In the Indian Ocean, there is a submerged continent formed by volcanic activity named
06:38the Kerguelen Plateau.
06:40A small portion of it has formed an island that only 130 people live on.
06:46The Southern Ocean is also known as the Antarctic Ocean.
06:50This ocean circles Antarctica and is the most southern of all oceans.
06:55It is the fourth largest ocean.
06:58Parts of it freeze in winter and then melt again in summer.
07:02Chile, Argentina, and Australia are some of the countries that border the Southern Ocean.
07:09This ocean is known for its stormy waters and can be quite dangerous.
07:14Because it is so open and windy, it creates enormous waves.
07:19Some over 32 feet high are very dangerous for ships passing through its freezing waters.
07:27Scientists have even discovered waves twice that tall.
07:32Fungi and algae are some of the plant life that exist in this ocean.
07:37The Arctic Ocean is the smallest, shallowest, and coldest of all the oceans.
07:43It is on the opposite side of the world from the Southern Ocean.
07:47Canada, Asia, Greenland, Europe, and Alaska almost surround this ocean entirely.
07:56Whales, polar bears, walruses, and seals live in and near this ocean.
08:03The Arctic Cod is a fish that lives in the Arctic Ocean in large numbers as well as snail
08:10fishes, eelpouts, and sculpins.
08:13There are roughly 70 species of phytoplankton found in the Arctic Ocean as well as Arctic
08:19seaweed and Arctic moss.
08:22As you can see, there are many types of plants and animals living in and near the world's
08:28oceans.
08:29The Arctic Ocean is a giant habitat where many of the living organisms rely on each
08:34other to stay alive.
08:36There are many types of fish living in the world's oceans.
08:40Here are just a few.
08:42Tuna, stingrays, angelfish, clownfish, sardines, and cod.
08:51In addition to fish species, there are also mammals that live in the ocean including dolphins,
08:58whales, seals, sea lions, sea otters, and manatee.
09:05Other animals include the octopus, lobster, crabs, jellyfish, squid, clams, and sea dollar.
09:16The oceans also provide food, recreation, and beauty for all of us on Earth.
09:23Life on Earth could not exist without our oceans.
09:27They are some of the most important natural resources we have.
