When this Merc opens his mouth, roasting is inevitable. Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the times that Deadpool skewered figures and moments from outside the Marvel Universe.
Transcript
00:00Watch out for this guy, Cable. He's very short, 5'11", not like in the comics.
00:06And if we succeed, we all go home early.
00:09Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the times that the Merc with a Mouth skewered figures and moments from outside the Marvel Universe.
00:18I wanna see you walk that door, baby, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye!
00:31I was born into war, bred into it.
00:36People think they understand pain, but they have no concept of it.
00:41In case you needed further proof that Wade Wilson can't take anything seriously, just look to this characteristically irreverent trailer promoting the franchise's first sequel.
00:50Initially, the trailer appears to be advertising a dark, gritty, dramatic cable film.
00:55Which, hey, we definitely would not turn down.
00:57Dale, why are the visual effects not done? It's a metal arm!
01:02Nearly 30 seconds pass before Reynolds' most iconic character literally stops the proceedings by pausing the trailer and lambasting an unseen Dale.
01:10Before referencing the famously troubled production of Warner Bros. Justice League.
01:14The rest of the trailer sees Deadpool taking matters into his own hands, by childishly using action figures to act out the plot's broad strokes.
01:23Reach for the sky!
01:26Oh, no! Sheriff Deadpool!
01:32I had a Liam Neeson nightmare.
01:34He dreamt I kidnapped his daughter and he just wasn't having it.
01:37Okay, so Deadpool isn't exactly the best judge of character.
01:41No one is disputing this.
01:43That said, he does raise a pretty good point as to the existence and primary plot of the Taken franchise.
01:49While in bed with Vanessa, Wade awakens in a cold sweat, revealing that he's had another Taken nightmare.
01:55I don't know who you are.
01:59I don't know what you want.
02:01If you're looking for a ransom, I can tell you I don't have money.
02:05For the uninitiated, these highly meme-worthy movies starred Oscar nominee Liam Neeson as a retired CIA officer whose family is repeatedly kidnapped.
02:14The films follow Neeson's efforts to retrieve them.
02:17Wade remarks that after three movies, one has to wonder if Neeson's character is any good as a father.
02:24Possible setup for a Deadpool-Taken crossover?
02:27Almost certainly not.
02:28But wouldn't that be something?
02:30But what I do have are a very particular set of skills.
02:34Skills I have acquired over a very long career.
02:37Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.
02:41Deadpool roasts t-shirts.
02:43Deadpool and Deadpool 2.
02:45I just want to get to know the real you, you know, not the short, shorter, two-dimensional sex object peddled by Hollywood.
02:51Admittedly, this entry isn't a roast as much as it is a loving homage.
02:55In the first Deadpool film, your friendly neighborhood pool guy is seen prominently sporting a t-shirt bearing Golden Girls star Bea Arthur's likeness.
03:03Ryan Reynolds reportedly met with the late performer's estate and paid $10,000 out of his own pocket for the rights to Arthur's face.
03:10That money was donated to charity.
03:12Always one to outdo himself, the film's sequel has Wade wearing an Olivia and Meredith shirt.
03:18If you're a Swifty, you might recognize the pair as pop star Taylor Swift's beloved kiddies.
03:23Who knew Deadpool was so in touch with his feminine side?
03:26Don't try to chase me.
03:28Ready to be touched again.
03:30All these old guys on the wall.
03:32Who lives here, Calista Flockhart?
03:39Papa, can you hear me?
03:45Papa, can you see me?
03:48It probably goes without saying that the Deadpool franchise is hardly family-friendly viewing.
03:53That said, as we've explored on our channel before, Deadpool is no stranger to letting the Walt Disney Company have it.
04:00Do you want to build a snowman?
04:03Come on, let's go and play.
04:06In a hilarious bit of meta-comedy, a clip from Barbra Streisand's 1983 classic Yentl plays in Deadpool 2, featuring Babs singing Papa, can you hear me?
04:15After Vanessa meets her short-lived, untimely end, Wade is heard singing Do you want to build a snowman?
04:21Famously of the Frozen soundtrack.
04:24The deadly assassin then muses that the two songs bear more than a passing resemblance.
04:29Papa, can you hear me?
04:33Is it just me or does Do you want to build a snowman from Frozen sound suspiciously like Papa, can you hear me from Yentl?
04:45I am soaking wet right now.
04:47Did you need further proof that Deadpool has precisely zero filter?
04:51Oh, you didn't? It kind of went without saying?
04:54Either way, let us break it down for you.
04:56Series star and co-writer Ryan Reynolds has never shied away from roasting himself.
05:00And in Deadpool and Wolverine, the Canadian-born actor's family takes some of that heat.
05:05Don't just stand there, you ape. Give me a hand up.
05:09No, I'm actually okay, thank you very much.
05:11Early on, Deadpool quips that Gossip Girl, the CW teen drama that gave Reynolds' wife Blake Lively her start, puts him, um, in the mood, let's say.
05:21Lively later shows up in the film as Lady Deadpool, a Deadpool variant, while the couple's children each have their own cameos.
05:28There's only nine people, but my entire world is right here in this picture.
05:33And I have no idea how to save it alone.
05:36Deadpool roasts like every pop singer, Deadpool 2.
05:40Don't worry, you're not gonna die. Although these will kill you.
05:44Hit it, Dolly.
05:45Once again, we think these roasts were executed, no pun intended, with genuine love and fandom.
05:50In Deadpool 2, the titular character name-drops several pop stars, both living and, you know, not living.
05:57The opening credits sequence is set to Dolly Parton's 9 to 5, with Reynolds referring to her by name.
06:03Deadpool also quips that he wants to name his and Vanessa's potential child Cher, which he later reiterates over her If I Could Turn Back Time.
06:19George Michael and David Bowie are referenced, with Poole mourning the former while quoting Careless Whisper and taking solace in the fact that Bowie is still around.
06:27Uh, who's gonna tell him?
06:29Mr. Poole, David Bowie is still with us.
06:33We do. He'll always have Bowie.
06:47We wonder if Brolin knew the degree to which Reynolds slash Deadpool would be taking aim at his long and storied career.
06:53Or maybe he contributed the roasts himself?
06:56In any case, the Oscar nominee is clearly a good sport.
07:00The most obvious target in Brolin's career is that, while he plays the mutant Cable in Deadpool 2, he's better known for his iconic role as MCU baddie Thanos, which Deadpool explicitly references.
07:11Pippin, Thanos, we have a deal with you.
07:14The merc also roasts the actor himself.
07:17Attempting to physically describe Cable, Deadpool notes that Brolin isn't quite comics-accurate casting.
07:23Careful, Poole, we've heard this guy's inevitable.
07:26Watch out for this guy, Cable! He's very short, 5'11", not like in the comics!
07:32Number 3, Deadpool roasts Warner Bros., Deadpool and Wolverine.
07:36You're letting him kill Martha!
07:45What does that mean?
07:48Why did you say that name?
07:50Was this all-too-brief Deadpool and Wolverine cameo the movie's most epic?
07:54While the jury's still out on that one, audiences cannot deny the charge they felt when a Wolvie variant turned around to reveal Henry Cavill's blindingly handsome mug.
08:03In short, Cavill played Superman in the ill-fated DC Extended Universe, receiving critical and fan acclaim for his performance.
08:10Unceremoniously ousted from the role following the critical and commercial failures of several DCEU films,
08:16the Cavill-Reen acknowledges that the actor is a popular choice for fan-casting the mutant,
08:21not to mention his tenuous relationship with the studio that distributed the films of DCEU.
08:27Who's that?
08:29You must be new to the Let Them Eat Cake feat.
08:31That is Bruce Wayne.
08:34Number 2, Deadpool roasts Ferris Bueller and the audience, Deadpool.
08:39By the time the first Deadpool film rolled out into theaters in 2016,
08:43superhero movie fans were well-acquainted with the infamous post-credits stinger,
08:47which had at that point appeared in nearly every MCU movie until that point.
08:52As such, fans knew that given Deadpool's reputation for making fun of superheroes, this trend would be roasted in some way.
08:59Oh, you're expecting a teaser for Deadpool 2? Well, we don't have that kind of money.
09:04We expect a Sam Jackson to show up with an eye patch and a saucy little leather number? Go!
09:11In the character's typically meta fashion,
09:13the Deadpool post-credits scene features Reynolds reenacting the stinger from Ferris Bueller's Day Off,
09:18in which Matthew Broderick admonishes the audience for having stayed in their seats.
09:22Deadpool puts a twist on this by lazily proposing elements that could appear in the film's sequel,
09:27seemingly roasting the MCU's tendency to include heavy foreshadowing in their post-credits scenes.
09:32Mr. Stark, you've become part of a bigger universe. You just don't know it yet.
09:37Who the hell are you?
09:39Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

10:08For one brief shining moment, Deadpool and Wolverine had us reliving the glory days of the early 2000s,
10:15when gas was cheap and boy bands ruled the world.
10:18As the merc handily dispatches a group of Time Variance Authority soldiers intended to bring him to Mr. Paradox,
10:24the shocking violence is interspersed with the titular character reenacting the iconic choreography from the Bye Bye Bye music video.
10:30What are you, wolfing?
10:31Who's asking?
10:34Woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah.
10:37Is that supposed to be scary?
10:39Pegging isn't new for me, friendo.
10:41Unfortunately, the moves aren't all Reynolds.
10:44While the actor handles some of the simpler moves, they're mostly performed by Nick Pauly, a dance double.
10:49At least he's credited as Dance Pool.
10:56What was your favorite Deadpool and Wolverine moment? Let us know in the comments.
11:00You're still here.
11:04It's over.
11:06Go home.
