Jon Machota on Cowboys camp battles, Trey Lance & more
The Athletic's Cowboys reporter Jon Machota joined the Get Right from Cowboys camp in Oxnard to discuss the camp battles at wide receiver, offensive line and more going on in California, if Trey Lance has been as bad as the media has made him out to be, and more.

00:00Mr. Match has got a question here for you, I haven't talked to you in a while.
00:18I have a keen for the wide receiver room and in this hypothetical, let's say the Cowboys
00:22are going to keep six receivers on their 53, CeeDee Lamb, Cooks, Tolbert, and Turpin.
00:28I can, I think we can both assume are in that four pretty comfortably.
00:31Fill out those last two spots for me.
00:34So, yeah, I think that those are pretty set.
00:39I think Jalen Brooks would be on there too.
00:42You didn't say him, did you?
00:43No, no, no.
00:44Didn't say Brooks.
00:45Yeah.
00:46Brooks would be on there.
00:47You know, the guys that have stood out in camp that maybe you wouldn't expect, especially
00:52recently it's been Jalen Cropper.
00:54And then I'd say maybe the previous four or five practices, Tyron Billy Johnson.
01:01And I went into camp thinking that Ryan Flournoy would be locked in just because they use a
01:06six round pick on him.
01:07But from what we've seen so far, and he's been, you know, coming back from injury and
01:10stuff like that, we haven't seen much from Flournoy.
01:13So I do think there, I can see them giving him the benefit of the doubt, again, using
01:18a six round pick on him to keep Flournoy.
01:21But in terms of what we've seen, you know, Brooks is locked in.
01:24He's not going anywhere.
01:25But that last spot, Tyron Billy Johnson's making a serious push for it because he's
01:30been really good.
01:31And then, like I said, Cropper's been coming on late.
01:33So those two, those are two guys I'm really looking forward to seeing when they practice
01:37tomorrow against the Rams.
01:38And then when they, you know, get in these preseason games, because there's not going
01:41to be a reason to have to see, you know, Brandon Cooks and some of these other guys.
01:45So, but yeah, Cropper and Billy Johnson, those are those are two guys that, you know,
01:51anything that you see being tweeted about them having like good cancer, things like
01:54that lately.
01:55There's a lot of truth to that.
01:56So I guess it's safe to assume they won't carry seven.
01:59So you think between Cropper, Billy Johnson and Flournoy, there's one roster spot between
02:02those three?
02:03Yeah, I do.
02:04I just because the thing is, I just can't find another spot on the roster where you
02:09can go that I mean, I think of that and and I'm already going with I just put out a 53
02:15as like only nine defensive linemen, which that would be really tough to do.
02:20Because I just think that there's a there's a decent possibility, like your 10th defensive
02:22lineman might not be on the team right now, either from when other teams cut to 53.
02:26Or maybe they make a move for one with Sam Williams now out.
02:30And so they're just it's tough, because you there's not really any position where I just
02:34feel like, oh, yeah, this one's kind of, you know, there's a lot of guys here, we can just
02:39take a couple of these guys off now that 53 is tight, like injuries might happen in the
02:42preseason that kind of sort that thing out.
02:45That does happen from time to time.
02:46But as we sit here right now, it's just tough for me to trim down somewhere else so I can
02:50keep a seventh receiver.
