00:00Welcome to Trending Places.
00:05Today we meet Exuma's adorable and famous swimming pigs.
00:12There are 360 islands in the Exuma Cays of the Bahamas, and Pig Beach is one of them.
00:20Its official name is Big Major Cay.
00:24Along with hundreds of other cays and islands, it forms a line stretching north from Exuma Island.
00:36The Exuma pigs, together with a few stray cats and goats, are the only animals that live on the island, which is known across the world for its Pig Beach.
00:47On the Swimming Pigs Beach, there are an estimated 20 to 25 pigs and piglets.
01:00The pigs are of different sizes, from the popular tiny piglets to Big Murmur, the biggest and oldest pig on the island.
01:10Nearby Staniel Cay, a larger and more accessible cay where travelers can fly into using the Staniel Cay Airstrip, is the well-known Big Major Cay.
01:26One of the top things to do at Staniel Cay is a swimming pigs tour. The boat ride to Pig Beach only lasts about 15 minutes.
01:39Private yachts and those with berths at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club frequently visit Big Major Cay due to its close proximity to Staniel Cay.
01:53Just around 100 miles separate Big Major Cay from Nassau, the Bahamas' capital city and hub for all tourism.
02:02Pig Beach is reachable via ferry, private plane, or motor boat.
02:11From more well-known locations like Nassau, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami, Bahamas' air tours can transport you to Pig Island.
02:24The island may be covered on foot in one or two hours and doesn't extend over one mile in length.
02:33Despite its small size, the island attracts more tourists annually than the remainder of the Bahamas' islands, which saw 6.62 million visitors in 2018.
02:49You must not miss this opportunity while you are in town.
02:55Have you ever wondered how the pigs came to Pig Beach? We are unsure for sure.
03:04The pigs are not indigenous to the island and Big Major Cay is deserted.
03:13Some claim that a party of seamen left them with the intention of cooking them when they returned.
03:21Or perhaps the pigs swam in from a nearby shipwreck.
03:28There are currently around 20 pigs and piglets living the easy life with daily visits from Bahamians and visitors, wherever they came from.
03:39Take a selfie with the swimming pigs when you go, they're even cuter in person.
