00:10The Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge, commonly known as the President JK Bridge, spans Lake Paranoa in the capital city of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Brasilia, and is made of steel and concrete.
00:23It is one of the most recognized icons of Brazil since it connects the city's heart to the lake's eastern coast via the main boulevard known as the Monumental Axis.
00:53The construction began in 2000, where it ended in 2002 and it was officially inaugurated on 15 December 2002.
01:11This asymmetric arch bridge which has a suspended deck is designed by the Brazilian architect Alexandre Chan with the help of the structural engineer Mario Vila Verde, and the bridge is used for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians.
01:26The total length of the bridge is 1,200 meters, with a 24 meters width that has two carriageways with three lanes in each direction, with two walkways on the sides for cyclists and pedestrians.
01:56The main bridge structure includes four supporting pillars that are buried in Lake Paranoa.
02:15There are three spans that are 240 meters, but the three arches that carry the deck weight stand out since they are each 61 meters tall.
02:26These enormous arches that span the road diagonally were built with steel cables extending downward from each arch in two directions to support the deck.
02:36The name comes from Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira, a former president of Brazil who is widely regarded as having played a major role in advancing plans for the country's future capital, Brazil.
03:06The Gustavo Lindenthal Medal for this project was presented at the 2003 International Bridge Conference in Pittsburgh.
03:29The Brazilian Metal Construction Association also presented the bridge with the Premio UPSIM 2003, Best Steel Work of the Year, Bridges and Highway Overpasses category.
03:43The public recognizes this enormous beauty and grandiosity of architecture right away, and it will continue to serve as an example for other architects who want to create something equally amazing and outlandish.
