Johnny 5 replica robot visits Wetherby
Wetherby-based metals4U welcomed a fully functional replica of Johnny 5 from classic film Short Circuit as they’re supporting the development of another robotic creation by Ryan Howard.

00:30I've been a fan of robots since I was a kid. I mean, one of my earliest favourite memories
00:34was going to the Toyota factory and seeing a robot arm put a door on a car, and it really
00:40sort of sparked my love for robots and anything robotic. I didn't do very well at school,
00:45unfortunately, but I knew I had a brain in there somewhere and I wanted to prove to myself
00:49that I could build a robot.
00:50Ryan developed his passion for electronics during the pandemic and built Johnny Five
00:54with a 3D printer, online templates and a fair bit of metal. He's since taken the replica
01:00to over 70 conventions, while building a global fan base who are following his journey to
01:05build a companion for Johnny Five.
01:07I built him, but he saved me during the pandemic. He was great for my mental health, and of
01:11course I came out the other side with a fully working Johnny Five. Metals for You have given
01:15me an opportunity to be able to build a second one, but this time show people the process
01:20and what it is, you know, all the trials and tribulations of building a robot.
01:26It's the kind of project that we really do try and encourage and support, because it's
01:30innovation, from what is taking very simple bits of metal and transforming them into something
01:36that's really quite fantastic, and that's what we've seen today, is just something that's
01:41really brought metal to life.
01:43It's been the most incredible journey, and of course, she'd kill me if I didn't mention
01:48I'd like to thank my fantastic wife for standing by with me. I'm sure most wouldn't tolerate
01:54having or living with a robot in their life and having to do the stuff that she does.
