The violent riots happening in the United Kingdom caused by the spread of fake news is a cautionary tale for Malaysia, says Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

He said the riots are a reminder that the spread of fake news should not be taken lightly.

00:00This is a general question. The UK parliamentarians have threatened social media platforms to comply with the same laws as Akhbar and Station TV.
00:14This is a follow-up. A man who claimed to be the first man to defame a community on social media during a riot in the UK. Can you comment on that?
00:26This has given us a realisation that we can't take fake news and spread it at the same time.
00:41We have seen how after the end of the 15th PRU in 2020-2022,
00:50there has been a wide spread in some of the social media platforms that were quite extreme and 3R at the time.
01:00So in Malaysia, we have had a lot of discussions with social media platforms to ensure that they are also proactive
01:09and help to contain the spread of fake news, especially news related to the 3R issue.
