01:08What had happened here was a mass killing and it's a national disaster and someone needs
01:13to be accountable for it.
01:16For over 17 years, al-Shabaab's been waging a deadly insurgency against Somalia's federal
01:22government.
01:23The group's fighters remain present in rural areas in the south and centre of the country,
01:28despite being ousted from the capital in 2011.
01:32To combat the group, President Hassan Sheikh Mohammed launched an all-out war against the
01:36militants in 2022, joining forces with local militias and with the support of the African
01:42Union and the United States.
01:44However, the offensive has suffered setbacks, with al-Shabaab claiming it had captured multiple
01:49locations in the centre of the country earlier this year.
