00:00As well as those who sell around the Maasin River, the business is back to normal.
00:06This includes Nanay Murni.
00:09In 2017, she started selling seashells called Tuwai by Nanay Murni.
00:15She sells it for 10 pesos per piece, and 100 pesos for a handful.
00:21It's very popular.
00:22It's like our legacy here in the Maasin River.
00:26This is also where we get our Tuwai.
00:30In Hayma, we can sell 500, 500, 500.
00:43I don't know if it's interesting, but it's quite good.
00:47It's quite chewy.
00:49The people of Siargao also promote sustainability culture.
00:53This is one of the many reasons why the former actress, Andy Agyeman, became more popular on the island.
01:01Since the pandemic, Andy chose to live here with his whole family,
01:06with the professional surfer, Philmar Alipayo.
01:09Here in Siargao, it was the community that really made me feel so at home.
01:13It's a bit more westernized because of the influence of the foreigners.
01:18Because there are a lot of foreigners living here.
01:20The adjustments that I have to make are not that big.
01:24In other countries, their thinking is more forward when it comes to things that are not good for the environment.
01:30And I've always been an advocate for the environment.
01:33I've always loved nature, and I always say that it's what saved me.
01:38It was my path to meeting Philmar and having this life.
01:41That's why when opening their own snack bar,
01:43one of Andy's non-negotiables and his co-owner, Wena,
01:47is using 100% biodegradable and compostable cups for their takeout coffee.
01:54They also encourage customers to bring their own tumbler or container for to-go orders.
02:00Yay! So since you have your own tumbler, you get a five peso discount.
02:05They also use banana leaves as packaging for their sandwiches.
02:09Way to go, guys!
02:11It's my way of giving back, to really take care of the environment.
02:15And seeing how Siargaonans are already a bit more educated about it,
02:21it became more exciting for me to help the rest of the Philippines,
02:26to help promote sustainability in our vlogs and in our social media.
02:31Andy is hands-on in his first business venture here in Siargao.
02:35That's why he's often the one promoting their customers.
02:40I really enjoy it because it's just basically me being able to share
02:44what Philmar and my kids love to eat at home.
02:47So we have smoothie bowls and fresh fruit slushies.
02:53We also have good coffee, but our bestseller is coffee.
02:57We also have good coffee, but our bestseller is coffee.
03:02It's our take on Spanish latte.
03:07Next to Snackmar is the surf shop that Philmar manages.
03:11Various island souvenirs and surfboard rental are available here.
03:14Of course, surf lessons for beginners and surf guiding can be enrolled here
03:18from a Level 3 International Surfing Association or ISA surfing instructor
03:23on Philmar's island co-owner.
03:28Philmar also stopped participating in surfing competitions due to the pandemic.
03:33I went back to Pagucong at the same time because we have a Happy Islander Surf Club.
03:39We have kids who we take care of and support.
03:42I bring them here and we support them.
03:45I also coach them.
03:48My dream is to become a surf coach.
03:51I want to share what I've learned in surfing.
03:54Andy and Philmar stopped participating in surfing competitions.
03:58Philmar was in between competitions in Borongan, Samar.
04:03I attended a wedding of my best friend in Manila with a kid.
04:06He said, he's a weatherman.
04:10He has a great understanding of the weather.
04:12He said, it's not safe, the storm is dangerous.
04:15We won't go there.
04:17Even if they didn't cancel the flight.
04:20Even if they didn't cancel the flight.
04:23The next day, there was a storm.
04:25It turned out to be worse than anyone expected.
04:28And we could not contact any of our family members or loved ones here.
04:32So, Papa joined the first plane that landed here
04:37to make sure that our family and loved ones are okay.
04:42They helped build the house of their family members and friends
04:46who were also considered family members.
04:48They also became a way for more people to reach the affected residents.
04:53A lot of people lost hope.
04:56A lot of people thought that it's done for them.
05:00But the good thing, the thinking of people like Papa,
05:04the real locals who are here,
05:08One of our riders, the day after the typhoon, went surfing.
05:12It made me so proud of the decision I made to stay here because of the people.
05:16The mindset of the locals, they are all alone.
05:19They help each other, they still smile, they still laugh.
05:23There is still a lot of hope and love in their hearts.
05:27We, the people of Siargao, even if we lost our house, electricity,
05:32we are used to it.
05:35So, it's okay for us, we are happy.
05:39As long as we are together and united, everything will be strong.
