00:00In the video captured by the fisherman Romar Estrada,
00:07you can see their bait that turned black after being thrown from the sea.
00:12Here, we caught the bait.
00:15See?
00:17Wow!
00:19It's a good thing. What if we caught all of our bait?
00:22Then it's gone.
00:24Instead of fish being caught in their movement,
00:27all of the fish were caught in the sea
00:30by the motor-tanker Terra Nova.
00:33They saw it at 5 o'clock in the morning.
00:35We were in a hurry to catch the fish
00:37so that we wouldn't be caught by the sea.
00:43When we caught the fish,
00:47the fish didn't come out of the water.
00:49The gas really came out of the water.
00:51It's a pity that the fish didn't come out of the water.
00:57We can't use this anymore.
00:59This is too much.
01:01But it's not only the bait that was affected by the oil spill.
01:06What's worse,
01:07the fish that they caught
01:09could hardly be sold anymore.
01:11The gas was too high.
01:14We couldn't buy our fish.
01:18We could only sell it at a lower price.
01:23We were hoping that we could make a profit
01:26if we gave more than P3,000.
01:28But that's all we got.
01:31P4,500.
01:33The sea is affected.
01:35People's livelihood is also affected.
01:40How did the oil spill start?
01:47While the strong winds of Hurricane Karina
01:50hit the Philippines on July 25, 2024,
01:53the motor tanker Terra Nova sank
01:55because of the strong waves.
02:00It was 3.6 nautical miles away
02:02from Lamao Port in Limay, Bataan.
02:05According to the Philippine Coast Guard or PCG,
02:08the tanker carrying 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel
02:12was traveling to Iloilo.
02:15Sixteen crews were injured
02:17and one crew was killed in the sinking of the tanker.
02:23Other organizations helped
02:25as soon as the PCG in Bataan
02:27started the oil spill response operations.
02:31This Monday,
02:32I joined the surface survey
02:34conducted by the Philippine Coast Guard in Bataan.
02:36We're here at the general location of Ground Zero.
02:40This is where the oil tanker Terra Nova sank.
02:45The oil spill was not that severe.
02:48There were a lot of oil spills.
02:50There were a lot of oil spills.
02:52There were a lot of oil spills.
02:54There were a lot of oil spills.
02:56There were a lot of oil spills.
03:05On July 28,
03:06three days after the sinking of the motor tanker Terra Nova,
03:09the Environmental Group of Greenpeace Philippines
03:12in Hagonoy, Bulacan
03:14reported that the oil spill had spread to this part of Bulacan.
03:17We had to rely on other sources
03:19to understand the full extent of the oil spill.
03:22So, apart from going to Limay,
03:25we also coordinated with our partner organizations
03:28that are aligned with our calls, like Oceana.
03:31Based on their map,
03:33it was clear that the spill was going
03:36or headed towards that direction.
03:39In the video they documented,
03:41the oil spill was only four kilometers away
03:45from Barangay Tibagina in Hagonoy.
03:50The sea was slowly shimmering.
03:55And then, we could see the streaks.
03:58And then, we could see pieces of oil.
04:01And then, we reached the thickest area
04:04where the oil was brown.
04:07Suddenly, you could feel the weight of the wind.
04:09Suddenly, you could smell the force, the oil.
04:12And we really had to be careful
04:14because it was also our health that could be affected.
04:19In the drone video,
04:20the oil spill was more visible.
04:25We took that opportunity to document it
04:28not only with eye-level pictures and testimonies,
04:32but also drone shots
04:33to see its full extent.
04:35This Wednesday,
04:36the Reporter's Notebook went to Hagonoy, Bulacan.
04:39The Oil Spill Trajectory Model
04:41released by the U.P. Marine Science Institute
04:44mentioned that there were oil slick sightings
04:47in Hagonoy, Bulacan,
04:49like the one documented by Greenpeace Philippines.
04:52How many fish did we catch?
04:56I'll try again.
04:59I've been here for three hours.
05:01I've been here for three hours.
05:03How many kilos did you expect, Tai?
05:05Two kilos.
05:06About 300.
05:08There are not many fish today.
05:10Mang Rodolfo is a fisherman.
05:12He hasn't caught any fish for a few days.
05:15How big is it inside?
05:16If there's a lot of oil,
05:18I can't catch fish.
05:20I can't catch fish.
05:22I'll just hold on to the table.
05:23So now, Tai, what you're doing,
05:25it's like you're just swimming.
05:27I'm just testing if I can catch fish.
05:30It's a good fish.
05:32The fisherman, Melchor de la Cruz,
05:34caught his last fish on July 26.
05:38But they didn't expect that
05:40instead of fish,
05:42they would catch fish oil.
05:45Is it oil?
05:46Yes.
05:47Around 11 or 12 at night,
05:50we noticed that
05:51we were dropping oil.
05:54We noticed that it was black and small.
05:57We didn't notice it.
05:58That's why we dropped oil.
06:01Melchor said
06:02that they heard that
06:04MTKR Terranova sank in Bataan.
06:07But they didn't know
06:08where the oil spill happened.
06:10This is the black oil.
06:13I thought it just splashed into the sea.
06:17When we were slowly lifting the oil,
06:20that's when I realized
06:22that the oil came from the ship that sank.
06:24That's why I did it.
06:26I didn't want others to know
06:28so that the fishermen in Tibagil would be aware.
06:31So I did it.
06:32I did it so that they would see it.
06:36Melchor caught his last fish that night.
06:39He said that it was enough for their gas.
06:42We went home
06:43because the fisherman didn't want to catch fish anymore.
06:47So he made an oil spill.
06:50If the fishermen don't catch fish,
06:51Melchor's family's income will dry up.
06:55But because there was no catch,
06:57they couldn't catch any fish.
06:59What I saved before going out,
07:02and what I saved,
07:05that's what we use for expenses.
07:11I also help my mother
07:14in her kitchen
07:16so that we can eat here.
07:21Melchor and his friends are still thinking
07:23about how they will survive the next few days.
07:28I don't know what we will do here on the island.
07:32Just like now,
07:34my friends,
07:36they have to disembark on the sea.
07:38Somehow.
07:40From here in Dalampasigan,
07:42the home of five children,
07:43the MTKR Terra Nova sank
07:454 nautical miles away.
07:49But it will be a week since that incident.
07:52Until now,
07:53the siphoning operations are not yet starting
07:56so that the 1.4 million liters
08:00of industrial fuel oil
08:02that was loaded by the sinking ship will be exhausted.
