00:05APPLAUSE
00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio.
00:34It's Friday the 8th of June, tomorrow is Saturday.
00:36In fact, it's the second Saturday in a month,
00:38which means only one thing, that it's Trooping the Colour.
00:41Of course, that's held to celebrate the Queen's official birthday.
00:47It's a big deal, Trooping the Colour on Horse Guards Brace, fantastic.
00:50Something like 1,400 members of the household division
00:55with 200 horses trotting around
00:57and something like 400 musicians, it's brilliant.
01:00It's a great ceremonial, great ceremonial.
01:03But when it comes to military parades,
01:05I don't know whether you like this sort of stuff, the Fairford Airshow.
01:08Everybody brings their big, bad planes and flies them around,
01:12make a hell of a lot of noise. Do you like a nice military parade?
01:15With you, I like an airshow.
01:17So, Southend used to have an airshow every year
01:19and I've been lucky enough to go and meet some of the Red Arrows.
01:22Whenever the Red Arrows are involved, it's something special, isn't it?
01:25Especially when you consider it's kind of 1970s aircraft
01:29that they're flying so close to each other.
01:31And they do a lot of really good stuff, actually, with STEM,
01:33with teaching science, technology, engineering and maths
01:36and enthusing the next generation into that direction.
01:39But they are some brave guys, aren't they?
01:41Fantastic. Amazing.
01:43Very impressive.
01:44Not as amazing as Mick Purdy,
01:46who's now got three wins tucked under his belt.
01:49Well done, golf caddy master from Scarborough.
01:52You had a bit of a close shave yesterday.
01:54Are you feeling relaxed now?
01:56Yep, thank you.
01:57Good man of many words.
01:59And you're joined by Darren Finlay,
02:02who is from Frimley Green in Surrey,
02:04a meeting services technical lead.
02:07Now, just explain that to us in a few words. It's a long title.
02:11It's mainly the technical support within rooms themselves.
02:14So, if people have a problem in a meeting room,
02:17they will call our guys and we will go and support them.
02:20OK. Excellent. Well, good luck to you today.
02:22Thank you very much.
02:23Let's have a big round of applause then for Darren and Mick.
02:30And over in Dictionary Corner, joining Susie, of course,
02:33is newscaster and journalist Nina Hussain.
02:36Welcome back, Nina.
02:38Welcome back.
02:41Now, Mick, off we go.
02:44Afternoon, Rachel. Afternoon, Mick.
02:46File, please. Thank you. Start today with E.
02:49And another?
02:52And another?
02:56And another?
03:00Consonant?
03:03Consonant?
03:07Consonant?
03:11Consonant?
03:15And a final consonant?
03:18And a final T.
03:21Stand by.
03:52Well, Mick? An eight.
03:55An eight. Darren? Seven.
03:57And your seven is? Details.
04:00Details. Mick? Dialogues?
04:03Um, you...
04:05are...
04:07spelling it the American way, I think.
04:10How are you spelling it? D-I-A-L-O-G-E-S.
04:13G-E-S. Oh, OK.
04:15You definitely need the U for the British spelling
04:18and for the American spelling, it's just a G at the end.
04:21Sorry about that, Mick. Bad luck.
04:23Bad luck. Early lead for Darren there, but over in the corner.
04:26Now, Nina? Thankfully, I'm not on my own in the corner,
04:29but we did get an eight.
04:31Isolated. Isolated. Well done.
04:34Very good.
04:36Isolated.
04:39Now, Darren.
04:42Good afternoon, Rachel. Afternoon, Darren.
04:45May I have a consonant, please? You may. Thank you. Start with D.
04:48And a vowel.
04:50A.
04:52And a consonant.
04:54Z.
04:56And a consonant.
04:58M.
05:00And a vowel.
05:02O.
05:04And a consonant.
05:06S.
05:08And a consonant.
05:10T.
05:12And a vowel.
05:14And a final E.
05:17Stand by.
05:45MUSIC STOPS
05:50Well done.
05:52I'll go for a risky six.
05:55Mick? Six.
05:57Now then, Darren.
05:59Mateys.
06:01Mateys. Mick?
06:03Mustard. M-A-S-T-E-D.
06:05Mustard. Are three mustards good enough?
06:07Mustard is fine.
06:09Unfortunately, I think mateys are going to be E-Y-S.
06:13Sorry, it's a very roundabout way of saying...
06:15You can actually spell it M-A-T-Y, not just M-A-T-E-Y,
06:18which means you can put the I-E-S on.
06:20So it's absolutely fine. Well done.
06:22Well done. One point ahead for Darren.
06:24And Nina. Nina.
06:26What have we got?
06:28We managed an eight, actually. Atomised.
06:31Oh, very good. That's very special.
06:33Anything else, Susie?
06:35No, just the diatoms that come up from time to time,
06:38the single-celled organisms, but atomised is definitely our best.
06:41Perfect, I think. Yeah.
06:43Seven plays six, Mick on six,
06:45and it's Mick we turn to for the first numbers game.
06:48Yes, Mick?
06:49Can I have one large, please, and five small?
06:51Your usual now, thank you, Mick.
06:53One from the top and five little ones.
06:55And the first one of the day is five.
06:57Three.
06:58Five.
06:59One.
07:00Four.
07:01And 100.
07:03And the target, 335.
07:05335.
07:12MUSIC CONTINUES
07:38Yes, Mick?
07:39330.
07:40330. And Darren?
07:42I think I've got 334.
07:44Let's try, shall we?
07:46Three times 100.
07:48300.
07:50Five plus one is six.
07:52Yep.
07:53Six times five is 30.
07:55It is.
07:56And add the final four.
07:58334, one away.
07:59Mm, pretty good.
08:01But still just slightly adrift.
08:03Rachel, can we have a 335?
08:06We can indeed.
08:07So, 100 plus five, 105.
08:10Times that by three for 315.
08:13And the other five times four is 20 to add on for 335.
08:17Perfect. Perfect.
08:21That's the way it's done.
08:23So, 20 plays Mick six
08:25as we turn to our first Tea Time teaser, which is Cannon Raid.
08:29And the clue, measure for measure, it's really very harsh indeed.
08:33Measure for measure, it's really very harsh indeed.
08:53Welcome back. Welcome back.
08:55I left with the clue, measure for measure, it's really very harsh indeed.
08:59Very harsh indeed.
09:00In fact, it's draconian.
09:02Draconian is what we're after.
09:05Now, if you'd like to become a Countdown contestant,

09:26Thank you, Darren. R.
09:28And a vowel.
09:31And a consonant.
09:35And another consonant.
09:39And a vowel, please.
09:42And a consonant.
09:46And another consonant.
09:49And a vowel.
09:53And a final vowel, please.
09:56And a final E.
09:58Stand by.
10:27Darren?
10:29Seven.
10:30Mick?
10:31I was seven but not written down.
10:33What would it be, Mick?
10:35Injured.
10:36Injured and...?
10:37Injured.
10:38Well done, all right.
10:42Well done.
10:4327 to 13 and in the corner,
10:45Nina and Susie.
10:47Nina?
10:48Yeah, we got three sevens, we got injured,
10:50so we also got rounder.
10:52Thank you.
10:5327 to 13, Darren on 27.
10:56Mick, your letters game.
10:58A vowel, please, Rachel.
11:00Thank you, Mick.
11:01I.
11:02And another.
11:03E.
11:04And another.
11:05O.
11:06And another.
11:07E.
11:09Consonant.
11:11T.
11:12Consonant.
11:14P.
11:15Consonant.
11:17W.
11:19Vowel.
11:21A.
11:22And a consonant.
11:24And the last one.
11:25N.
11:27Stand by.
11:51MUSIC
12:02Yes, Mick?
12:03Six.
12:04And Darren?
12:06I'll risk a six.
12:07Mick?
12:08Weapon.
12:09Now, what's this risk you're taking, Darren?
12:12Panty.
12:13Panty singular?
12:15For some reason I thought you were going there, Darren,
12:17and it's not there in the singular, I'm sorry.
12:20What can we have, I wonder?
12:22Nina?
12:23We're going to stick with a six as we got weapon
12:25and also opiate for a six as well, and...
12:28And a peewit.
12:29A peewit.
12:30What's a peewit?
12:31A peewit is a bird.
12:32Ah.
12:33Yes.
12:34And now, Darren, it's your numbers game.
12:36Thank you, Nick.
12:37Can I have two from the top and four small?
12:40You can indeed.
12:41Thank you, Darren.
12:42Two large, four little this time.
12:44And these four little ones are three, five, one, and eight,
12:49one big 250 and 100.
12:52And the target, 609.
12:54609.
13:20Darren?
13:22608.
13:24608.
13:26Mick?
13:27605.
13:28And 605.
13:30Darren?
13:32Five plus for one.
13:34Five plus one for six.
13:36Times 100.
13:37600.
13:38Plus the eight.
13:39108.
13:40608.
13:41Well done, Darren, well done.
13:43609, where is it, Rachel?
13:47Well, if you say 50 divided by five is 10, add three for 13,
13:53take that 13 off the 100 for 87,
13:57and then eight minus one is seven and times them together.
14:01That's wonderful.
14:02APPLAUSE
14:06And now we turn to Nina.
14:08And, Nina, those big news stories, they just keep rolling in.
14:13And there have been some big ones since you were here last year.
14:16Yeah, I mean, I've been a journalist for 22 years.
14:20And last year I have seen absolutely nothing like it.
14:24It was relentless.
14:26We covered some of the darkest stories that I hope to never have to
14:31cover ever again, to be honest.
14:33It started, of course, with the Westminster attack in March in
14:38London, with the death of PC Palmer and the innocent people on the
14:42bridge that day, you know.
14:44Then we had this hideous moment of realisation that something had
14:49happened at a pop concert in Manchester, you know,
14:53the bomb and 22 victims there.
14:56After that, London was attacked yet again.
14:59And only a few days after the attack on the capital,
15:04we saw the burning building of Grenfell Tower.
15:07I mean, we just couldn't believe what we were reporting on.
15:11I think there was a moment towards the end of the year when the story
15:15of the day, really, the talking point of the day,
15:18when one Prue Leith, you know, very famous face and certainly on
15:22Channel 4 nowadays, had accidentally revealed the winner of the
15:26Bake Off final just hours before that was shown.
15:31I know it's a programme close to your heart as well, Nick, now.
15:35And it was just this moment of thinking, do you know what?
15:39If the biggest story of the day in Britain today is a mistake made on
15:43a television programme, do you know what?
15:46We'll take that.
15:47For this day, we'll take the fact that we're away from the darkness
15:51for a moment.
15:52Well, thanks for that, Nina.
15:54And, of course, thanks also for giving us those stories.
15:58So clearly, because your head must be banging with all the stuff
16:02coming in, and yet you've got to talk through it and deliver it.
16:05So it's a great job you do.
16:07Thank you.
16:08Big round of applause for Nina Hussain.
16:10APPLAUSE
16:12And over to my right, we have Mick.
16:16Mick Purdy, your letters game.
16:18Thank you.
16:19Vowel, please, Rachel.
16:21Thank you, Mick.
16:22O.
16:23And another.
16:25And another.
16:27E.
16:28And another.

16:49And a final P.
16:51And here's the Countdown Clock.
16:55CLOCK TICKS
16:58CLOCK TICKS
17:23Yes, Mick?
17:24Seven.

17:29Pedalos.
17:30And?
17:31Spooled.
17:32Spooled.
17:33Nice.
17:34Very nice.
17:35Yeah, good words.
17:36Good sevens.
17:37Nice.
17:38Now, what of the corner?
17:39Nina?
17:40We got spooled and, yeah, the worst watercraft ever invented, pedalo.
17:44And you got another one as well, didn't you, Susan?
17:46Otherwise, just six is lapsed, for example.
17:49Lapsed.
17:50Yeah.
17:51Thank you.
17:5226 to 41, Darren holding on.
17:54And it's Darren we turn to now.
17:56Letters game, Darren.
17:57Thanks, Nick.
17:58Consonant, please.
18:00Thank you, Darren.

18:22A vowel.
18:24A.
18:26And a final consonant, please.
18:28And a final Q.
18:30Stand by.
18:53MUSIC
19:03Darren?
19:04Six.
19:06A six. Mick?
19:07I'll try a six.
19:09So, Darren?
19:10Mateys.
19:12Really?
19:13And Mick?
19:14Fattism.
19:15Fattism.
19:16Susie?
19:17Well, it's in the dictionary, but with two Ts rather than one, Mick,
19:20I'm afraid.
19:21Prejudice against the obese.
19:23Ah, fattists.
19:25And Nina and Susie, what have you conjured up out of that?
19:29We got a colourful but short fiesta for six.
19:32A fiesta. Love them.
19:34And now, Mick, it's your numbers game.
19:37Good luck to you.
19:38I'll have six small ones, please.
19:40Six small, gambling to make up the difference.
19:42Good decision, Mick. I like it.
19:44Six little ones are two, nine, ten,
19:49three, four, and eight.
19:53And the target?
19:55946.
19:57946.
19:59MUSIC
20:19MUSIC
20:31Well, Mick?
20:32936.
20:33936. Darren?
20:36943.
20:38Off we go. Darren?
20:40So, I've got ten times nine is 90.
20:45Ten times nine, 90.
20:47Plus the four, 94.
20:49Eight plus two is ten.
20:52Times 94.
20:54940.
20:55And add the final three.
20:57And add the final three for three away. Well done.
21:00Well done.
21:01But 946, Rachel, can you help us?
21:03Just about.
21:05If you say four times three is 12,
21:08times nine is 108,
21:11plus ten is 118.
21:14Times that by eight for 944 and add on the two, 946.
21:19Well done.
21:20APPLAUSE
21:23That's the way, 946.
21:25So, 54 plays Mick's 26.
21:28As we turn to our second tea time teaser,
21:31which is no praises and the clue,
21:33there are no praises connected with this answer.
21:36In fact, it's quite the opposite.
21:38There are no praises connected with this answer.
21:41In fact, it's quite the opposite.
21:44MUSIC
21:59Welcome back. I left with the clue,
22:01there are no praises connected with this answer.
22:03In fact, it's quite the opposite.
22:05And the answer to that one is aspersion.
22:10So, with the score standing 26-54 in Darren's favour,
22:14we turn to you, Darren, for a letters game.
22:16Off we go.
22:18Thank you, Dick.
22:19Um, consonant, please.
22:21Thank you, Darren. D.
22:23And another.
22:25T.
22:26And another.

22:40And another vowel.
22:43O.
22:44And a final consonant, please.
22:46And a final R.
22:49Stand by.
22:50MUSIC
23:08MUSIC
23:21Darren?
23:23Just a four.
23:25Mick?
23:27I'll try an eight.
23:29Now, your four, Darren.
23:31Road.
23:33And Mick?
23:34Out hoard.
23:36H-O-A-R-D.
23:38Um...
23:40Not in the dictionary, I'm afraid.
23:42Sorry about that, Mick.
23:44Can't out hoard somebody else.
23:45Good try. Good try.
23:47Now, Nina. Nina and Susie?
23:49So, we've got a five and a six, an author for six,
23:53and a doula for five.
23:55Doula?
23:56Yes, somebody who gives support to a woman in her labour or birth.
24:00Oh, yes, I remember that.
24:02Doula.
24:03Doula.
24:04Doula, thank you.
24:0558 plays 26, Darren on 58, and it's Mick's letters game.
24:09Consonant, please, Rachel.
24:11Thank you, Mick.
24:12N.
24:13And another.
24:16T.
24:17And another.

24:41And the final consonant.
24:43And a final F.
24:45Going by.
25:04WHISTLE BLOWS
25:17Well, Mick?
25:18A seven.
25:20A seven. And Darren?
25:21Seven.
25:23Mick?
25:24Suction.
25:25And?
25:26Same word, suction.
25:27There we go. Show that to Mick.
25:30So, 65 to 33 as we turn to Susie.
25:34Now, Susie, what have you for us today?
25:37Well, as you know, Mick, and as regular viewers will know,
25:40I love those words that wear their heart on their sleeve,
25:43but we just don't see it somehow,
25:45so they're sort of almost too obvious, if you like.
25:48So, freelancers were knights who used their lances as sort of mercenaries,
25:52so wherever they pleased.
25:54Heathens lived on the heath, secretaries kept secrets.
25:57Those are amongst my favourites.
25:59But there's another one that didn't really occur to me until quite recently,
26:02and that's the lovely verb to roam.
26:04So if you're roaming, you wander aimlessly,
26:08but with pleasure, normally, if you're a roamer.
26:11And, believe it or not, it actually comes back to the city of Rome.
26:15Different spelling, but it referred originally to, we think,
26:18we're pretty sure about this, to the roundabout course
26:21that was taken by English pilgrims in the Middle Ages.
26:24I say we're pretty sure about it because there's not definitive proof,
26:27but it is very much our best guess.
26:29So they used to travel, as I say, roam the world until they got to Rome.
26:35So it was testament, really, to the seduction of the city.
26:38And the reason that we are fairly sure about this
26:42is that other languages in other countries have very similar words.
26:46So pilgrimages were made to Rome from many other countries.
26:49So in France, Romier was a pilgrim on his way, or her way, indeed, to Rome.
26:55And in Spain, Romero became a word, similarly, someone on their way to Rome,
26:59but also a wanderer.
27:01And in Italy, of course, famously, we have a Romeo,
27:03and the real meaning of Romeo is a wayfarer, if you like, or a wanderer.
27:08So it's quite likely that the famous city of Rome gave us all of those words.
27:13But I love the idea that when we roam and wander,
27:15we're actually looking to the city of Rome.
27:18Oh, very good.
27:21APPLAUSE
