00:00Hundreds of German soldiers, 24 warfare aircrafts and a frigate.
00:09This is just part of what German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has deployed for one of the
00:14largest ever air warfare exercises in the Indo-Pacific.
00:20While in the region for bilateral talks with partners, he also visited German troops taking
00:24part in military trainings.
00:27The aim?
00:28To deter China.
00:29Six Skies is a series of five exercises where the German Air Force participates with the
00:34US, European and regional partners at different places across the Indo-Pacific.
00:41The first three legs in Alaska, Japan and Hawaii have concluded.
00:46The multinational exercises taking place in Australia are set to end this week before
00:51deploying to India for further training.
00:54But why is Germany's involvement in these exercises a priority for Berlin?
00:59Germany is strengthening its military presence in the Indo-Pacific amid rising tensions
01:03between China and Taiwan.
01:06Tensions between the two present a threat to peace in the region, along with the safety
01:10and security of international shipping through the Taiwan Strait, which is part of the South
01:14China Sea, and claimed by Beijing.
01:18China's increasing power play, including building military facilities on islands in
01:23the hotly contested sea, has seen conflict over trade routes, oil and gas deposits and
01:28fishing rights.
01:29With Germany being one of the world's largest exporting nations and almost 60% of all global
01:35economic output being generated in the Indo-Pacific, Berlin needs to ensure trade can flow freely.
01:42Germany's ships will pass through the South China Sea.
01:45But Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has not yet announced whether they will also go through
01:50the Taiwan Strait, a move which would surely upset Berlin's top trading partner, China.
