U.S. Coast Guard Demonstrates Ability to Deploy Quickly in Indo-Pacific

The U.S. Coast Guard demonstrates how to secure a port as part of the RIMPAC 2024 military exercises.

00:00This is the CGC Midget. It's a U.S. Coast Guard ship that has just come back from conducting maritime patrols in waters around Japan.
00:06Now it's looking to share what it learned during its deployment with other countries here at RIMPAC.
00:11These ships are participating in the world's largest maritime exercises known as a RIMPAC in Honolulu, Hawaii.
00:18While most ships taking part in the exercise belong to a Navy,
00:22Coast Guard ships like these play a crucial role as they protect maritime borders and police illegal activities.
00:28The crew from this base say Coast Guard operations have come under the spotlight as China's Coast Guard butts heads with Taiwan's
00:35around its outlying islands and with the Philippine Coast Guard in the South China Sea.
00:40But forces from both the Philippines and Taiwan are not participating in this exercise and officials say that could hurt future cooperation efforts.
00:48Not every Pacific Island nations are here in this current RIMPAC Pacific exercise,
00:53but routinely just throughout the year Coast Guard and other not just on our team, but other teams have been dealing with
01:01providing the training, interoperability, and enhancing their capability as well as us learning from those engagements.
01:08So routinely we do deploy and we do train with other international partners throughout the world.
01:13Over the next week, Japan, Italy, Mexico, and Canada will join to conduct
01:18humanitarian operations and learn how to secure a port against an attack.
01:22They say protecting waterways are crucial for countries to ensure the free flow of ships and commerce.
01:28The crew from this ship say that a country's Coast Guard is like the tip of a spear as it deals with a variety
01:33of threats on a daily basis. And so the goal here is to learn from those exchanges and continue improving its capabilities.
