00:00As we know, the Olympic Games is not easy to win a medal, but our trio has shown a good
00:24performance during qualification round and elimination round.
00:27So they are still young and we hope that they can continue to improve on their shooting
00:36and score in the future and of course in the next Olympic Games.
00:51These encouraging words come from none other than Monredi Suti, Malaysia's first archer
00:58to have qualified for the Olympics.
01:01Having represented the country in Athens, Greece in 2004, FMT Lifestyle met with her
01:07at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris in Tanjung Malimpera, where she is a lecturer and coach.
01:19Hailing from the small town of Pengkalan Hulu in Gerigpera, Suti was just 22 when she
01:25was catapulted onto the world stage.
01:28During that time, I feel like my dream come true.
01:32I start archery because of I want to work in Malaysia, that's all.
01:37So I feel like, how do I want to be an athlete in Malaysia?
01:40How do I want to wear Malaysian fashion?
01:44So I feel like, how do I want to be an athlete?
01:51Because I feel like it's not easy and I feel like a hero.
01:59In Form 2, Suti discovered archery in school.
02:03She gradually worked her way up to the national team in 2001, becoming part of Malaysia's
02:09first batch of archers.
02:12Suti pushed herself with discipline and training during her university days, and it paid off
02:18when she placed third at the World Championships in 2003, earning a ticket to the Olympics.
02:26Speaking about her experience at the Games, Suti recalls a conversation she will never
02:32forget, congratulating Korean archer and gold medalist Park Seung Hyun, who had just broken
02:38an Olympic record.
02:40So he said, thank you.
02:44But he felt that at that time, he could have done better.
02:50Because he felt like my body condition was not okay.
02:55But you broke the Olympic record.
02:58So I was like, oh.
03:01Okay.
03:03So when I look back, this is what we call a world champion or Olympic champion.
03:11He always thinks that he is not proud of what he has achieved.
03:16And he feels that he still needs to work harder.
03:19Although she shortly retired after her Olympic stint owing to injuries, she says, once an
03:25athlete, always an athlete.
03:28Today, the former Olympian remains dedicated to training the next generation of archers
03:37in Malaysia.
03:41From having just five archers in the national team, the sport has attracted numerous young
03:47talents and seen tremendous growth in the country.
03:51Now 42, Suti continues as a coach, currently gearing up for the Malaysia Games.
03:57Although the women's recurve team at the Paris Olympics may have missed their mark,
04:01Suti is still hopeful for the future.
04:04All of our qualified athletes are still young.
04:09Some are 19, 20, 21 years old.
04:15So they still have a long way to go for the second or third Olympics.
04:23With that, let's remain optimistic that archery will contribute to Malaysia's Olympic
04:28medal tally in 2028.
