00:03 The first and only Malaysian to win a gold medal in javelin at the Asian Games

00:08 did it without any coaching.

00:10 His name is Nashatar Singh Sidhu.

00:13 Recently crowned Tokoh Sukan,

00:16 Nashatar bravely challenged athletes from Japan and Pakistan

00:20 in the finals of the javelin throwing competition at the 1966 Asian Games.

00:25 The police officer was leading the game from the start.

00:29 In the fifth throw, Nashatar's javelin shot like a missile from his grasp

00:34 and charted 72.92 meters,

00:37 which was 4.68 meters further than second-placed Takeshi Ikeda of Japan.

00:42 He went on to become a double Olympian,

00:45 representing Malaysia in Tokyo in 1964 and Mexico in 1968.

00:51 But javelin was not the only sport Nashatar excelled at.

00:56 Nashatar made the Perak All-Blues rugby team

00:59 while he was working as a high court interpreter

01:02 and later became a regular for Perak, North Malaya and the national side,

01:06 which he represented until 1966.

01:09 On January 14, the 85-year-old was named Tokoh Sukan by the Malaysia Athletics Federation

01:16 for outstanding achievements as an athlete, national coach and administrator.
