00:00More about this now with Angela Diffley, who joins me on the set. Angela, talk us through a bit more
00:04of the impact of Haniyeh's death so far. Yeah, I know you're going to talk to people in Lebanon
00:10just after me. So, first of all, let's look at the Hamas reaction. You quoted some of their words
00:17there. They said this will not go unanswered. It should be said that this kind of, these are called,
00:23you know, extraterritorial targeted assassinations. Israel has engaged in them before,
00:29although it doesn't usually say clearly what has happened. It has long been trying to target
00:36those responsible for October the 7th, notably Yair Yassin, who remains, it is thought, hiding
00:42in tunnels beneath Gaza. Other countries do this too. I mean, notably Osama Bin Laden in the USA,
00:48targeting an assassination of him in the end. This is a feature of how war is in this area.
00:57It is interesting also if you talk to people within Israel, there are different schools of
01:04thought. Some are very worried because although the leader of Hamas, the political leader of
01:10Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh was not considered the most belligerent and was very key to these ceasefire
01:17talks and the possible deal which might return the hostages. A lot of Israelis are worried about
01:23that. However, there is another school of thought that getting Haniyeh gives Benjamin Netanyahu a
01:33clear win and perhaps the possibility of saying we have killed the political leader of Hamas,
01:38we have won. And it might be the beginning of starting to wind down talks. Very important in
01:46all this is Iran. This assassination took place on Iranian soil. They have a new president. But
01:53it should be remembered that real power in Iran lies with the supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. He
01:59has not changed. Iran has said that Israel will regret this cowardly act. But, you know, nuclear
02:08scientists, Iranian nuclear scientists have previously been assassinated, it is thought,
02:13by Israel. And the reaction has not been as big as it might be. And so very many people
02:24wonder if Iran is ready to risk a major confrontation with Israel, with Washington,
02:31over the cause of Hamas, over the Palestinians. And everyone is hoping that restraint will prevail
02:38on all sides. Angela, thank you for that.
