00:06ABC is set to have made offers to Kimmel and Mulaney, both of whom passed on the job,
00:10as first reported by Puck News. Kimmel, ABC's late-night host, was offered the opportunity
00:15first. He's already emceed the Academy Awards four times, including the last two years,
00:20but he ultimately said no. The decision may come as a surprise to those who know Kimmel
00:24to ultimately say yes to most major ABC gigs in the name of being a good partner.
00:28But he's also been vocal in recent years about his desire to have more balance in his life,
00:33which played into his decision to take the summers off at Jimmy Kimmel Live.
00:36As for Mulaney, his name has been bandied about as a potential host ever since he won over the
00:41Oscar crowd at the Governor's Awards earlier this year. The year prior, Mulaney had been
00:45asked by The Hollywood Reporter if he would ever consider hosting the Oscars. He said at the time,
00:50Sure, why not? It would be really fun. It's hosting the Academy Awards. Johnny Carson did that.
00:55And while the comic addressed the possibility more recently, telling THR in June that he,
00:59quote, wouldn't necessarily say no, in the end, he decided to pass for this year.
01:04Though hosting the Oscars is a prestigious opportunity, it's also a massive, months-long
01:09and often thankless undertaking. Plus, Mulaney would have had to give up other opportunities,
01:13including another likely — and hugely lucrative — stand-up tour.
01:17Fortunately for the Academy and ABC, there's still plenty of time to find a host.
01:21The Oscars aren't slated to air until Sunday, March 2.
01:24ABC declined to comment for this story, and the Academy did not immediately respond.
