00:00And that's where we begin in the business of sports betting.
00:05And in fact, this is the legal, illegal part of sports betting.
00:08You may remember the story last year with an individual getting
00:11proprietary information about a college baseball game, used it
00:14to bet on potentially one of the teams to win in the Southeastern
00:19Conference. Again, this is Bert Neff, an Indiana businessman
00:22who federal authorities described as a professional gambler.
00:25He was sentenced to eight months in prison and three years of
00:28supervised release on Monday for a role in a betting scandal
00:31involving a Southeastern Conference baseball game in 2023.
00:35He pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice, which was the big
00:37charge in March after federal authorities accused him of destroying
00:41evidence, tampering with witnesses, and providing false statements
00:44to the FBI during an investigation into suspicion betting on
00:48an Alabama LSU baseball game back on April 28, 2023.
00:54You may remember that this individual allegedly placed a bet
00:58at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati by getting information
01:01regarding one of the starting pitchers in the game, you know,
01:03clearly obstruction of justice.
01:05One of the main reasons why this guy ends up getting prison time.
01:08All right.
01:08Now, let's get to baseball.
01:09We've got a ton to talk about here. Last night, late night, a big
01:13trade in baseball capped off by the Atlanta Braves, a very strange
01:17one in the sense for the San Francisco Giants who just signed
01:20Jorge Suleir to a three-year contract a few months ago and traded
01:25him and got nothing, essentially.
01:26They get Tyler Matzik back in return.
01:28The Braves take on the entire salary. So long, Suleir.
01:31He goes back to the place where he won a World Series and won
01:33the MVP. The Houston Astros need some starting pitching.
01:36They acquire UC Kikuchi from the Toronto Blue Jays. Blue Jays
01:39did pretty well here, get a couple of prospects in return, including
01:42Joey LaPerfido, their first baseman who took over when Jose Abreu
01:46went to the minor leagues. The Cleveland Guardians always working
01:49in the shadows.
01:49They acquire Lane Thomas from the Nationals for three prospects
01:52and also Justin Turner.
01:54It seems like he's played on a lot of teams the last few years.
01:56His next one is now the Seattle Mariners.
01:58He was traded by the Blue Jays there. Also late last night, our
02:01guest coming up on the show, Robert Murray broke this trade as
02:05the Brewers acquire Frankie Montas, another starter from the
02:08Cincinnati Reds.
02:09So the Reds waving the white flag here, Montas goes to Milwaukee.
02:13The Cardinals also get Eric Fetty in an eight-player deal with
02:16the Dodgers and White Sox.
02:17Also going to the Cardinals is Tommy Pham. Dodgers bring back
02:21Ahmed Rosario in a trade with the Rays. Rays expected to make
02:24more trades today and potentially some other teams as well.
02:27That's what we have an eye on for you for the next hour and
02:29throughout the day.
02:30Now, let's get to the latest on watching your favorite baseball
02:33team because an agreement has now been made to watch your games
02:36on your RSNs, on your cable operators. Comcast, their blackout
02:40of Valley Sports Channels comes to an end. The two sides announce
02:43they agreed on a new carriage deal allowing baseball fans to
02:45watch their local teams beginning Thursday in the start of August.
02:50This includes 15 regional sports networks. Remember Diamond
02:53Sports also potentially going bankrupt here too.
02:57So, you know, really this is just a temporary solution to
03:01watching games. No word on whether Valley Sports will continue
03:04or Diamond Sports will continue.
03:05But for the rest of the season, if you have Comcast and you
03:08have one of your teams on your regional sports network, you
03:10can watch the game.
03:10That's the story today. Arizona Diamondbacks. Will they be able
03:13to react quickly enough to the injury that they had last night
03:16to their great slugger at first base Christian Walker? He has
03:19an oblique injury.
03:20And if you know anything about these, these are not days.
03:23These are months, potentially batting 254. 23 home runs, having
03:27a really nice season for Arizona.
03:29They had a comeback win, which we'll talk about. The Yankees
03:31beat the Phillies last night, 14-4. Jazz Chisholm Jr. ended
03:35up hitting a home run and then another home run off a position
03:38player late in the game.
03:39The Reds beat the Cubs 7-1. Red Sox beat the Mariners 14-7.
03:43And the Mets, who are expected to be active on trade deadline
03:45day, won 15-2.
03:47Meanwhile, the White Sox lose again, and this was pathetic,
03:50a Grand Slam winner for Bobby Wood Jr. in an 8-5 final.
03:54Sort of incredible comebacks last night. Pirates beat the
03:57Astros. And then finally, the Diamondbacks end up beating
03:59the Nationals as Corbin Carroll hit a pinch-hit walk-off
04:02two-run home run in the ninth. Despite a poor start from
04:06Jordan Montgomery, Corbin Carroll was the hero and talked
04:09about it postgame.
04:10We've been saying it all year.
04:12You know, Joe, I think, said it.
04:14Joe Mathers said it at the beginning of the last series,
04:16like we're just, we're never out of the game.
04:18That's truly how it's felt.
04:21Just, it's not over till it's over.
04:23And we've been putting together some really great late game
04:27at-bats, and it just seems like it's been able to pay off
04:30a little bit.
04:32Corbin Carroll did not have a great season, but that's why
04:35they play 162.
04:37Meanwhile, if you're in the swimming pool going up against
04:39Katie Ledecky, you have no shot.
04:41She's at the Paris Olympics, dominating again this morning
04:44for the first time since winning a bronze medal in the 400
04:47On Tuesday, she returned to the pool to swim in the 1500
04:50meter freestyles and won by a large margin.
04:54She's the 2023 world champion, defending gold medalist
04:57from Tokyo, and certainly is someone to watch over the
05:01next week or so to see if she can capture the gold.
05:04Meanwhile, how about the men's triathlon in Paris, postponed
05:08due to a water quality issue in one of their rivers?
05:12It was supposed to start today, and it was, they're confident
05:15they could still start tomorrow, but we heard about this
05:17a month ago, that they've been testing the water constantly
05:20and showing increased levels of E. coli in the river following
05:23the weekend's heavy rain.
05:25It's called the Seine River.
05:27The water level is already far higher than normal for July,
05:31but needless to say, this is not the first time we've heard
05:33of this.
05:34They've been working on this for a while.
05:35Coco Gauff, unfortunately, loses in Paris.
05:38She's out of the women's singles.
05:40There was some controversy involved in this match.
05:42She was arguing with one of the officials, and it was seen
05:45crying, unfortunately, for Coco.
05:47Not the best look.
05:48Unfortunately, she is not going to win the gold in Paris
05:51this year.
05:51Meanwhile, Team Canada rolls on in their basketball event, 93
05:55to 83.
05:56They end up beating Australia.
05:57RJ Barrett, 24 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists.
06:00SGA playing, of course, at 16 points on 8 for 10 shooting.
06:05Gilbert McGregor will weigh in on the result coming up in
06:08less than 5 minutes from now.
06:10USA basketball on the women's side, 20-point favorites over
06:13Tokyo.
06:15They won by a lot more than that.
06:16USA wins 102 to 76, a super high-scoring game at the Olympic.
06:23Japan's tallest player was 6 foot 1.
06:26Folks, that ain't gonna work against Team USA, this just in.
06:29All right, over to football headlines here.
06:31John Elway, no longer running things in the Denver Broncos
06:34organization, made an interesting comment saying that he
06:38basically thought that the biggest mistake that he made
06:41as the GM or president, he was making the decisions with
06:44the Broncos, said that last year he was playing golf with
06:47Josh Allen and wondering why he basically didn't take him
06:51in the 2018 draft.
06:52John, we're all wondering the same thing.
06:55Houston Texans defensive end Danico Autry has been suspended
06:58six games for violating the NFL's policy against performance
07:02enhancing drugs, 34 years old.
07:04He says it was because the doctor submitted a prescription
07:07for a different medication that contained a banned substance.
07:11He just signed a two-year $20 million deal after getting
07:1511 and a half sacks last season.
07:17Also a tough loss for the Indianapolis Colts during a full
07:20squad workout on Sunday.
07:22Samson Ibukam ends up having a torn Achilles after posting
07:27nine and a half sacks last season.
07:29At this point, he would be expected to miss the entire season.
07:32Also good news for the Cleveland Browns and maybe good news
07:35for your fantasy team.
07:36If you draft Nick Chubb, it looks like he's making good
07:38progress.
07:39He's supposed to return at some point early in the season.
07:42No return for Rashad Penny to the NFL.
07:45He's 28 years old and announced his retirement this morning.
07:49A first-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft after just six seasons
07:53in the league.
07:54Kareem Jackson signs a one-year deal with the Bills after struggling
07:57last season with the Broncos and the Cincinnati Bengals unveil
08:01a brand new locker room.
08:03Congrats to them.
08:04They now have Wi-Fi in the bathroom.
08:09All right, congrats.
08:11A lot more toilet time, I guess, for these guys.
