00:00Hello there! Hi. Can you tell me about your farm?
00:10First Stable's Maple Syrup and we're located on Highway 7A and Cabin between Cabin and
00:16Bethany. Okay. And we've been making maple syrup for over 50 years. Oh wow. We top 3,500
00:23trees. We're certified organic and we're inspected by CFIA as well.
00:29Oh wow. And how many trees do you have? 3,500. 3,500 trees. So this is like the third generation
00:35or the fourth generation? So, um, I guess it would be four generations doing maple syrup.
00:42So you have a huge farm obviously. Yes. And then I noticed that you have this. Yes. I've
00:47never seen anyone have it in powder form before. Can you tell me? So, it's maple syrup that we
00:51cook more coulant and, um, no not coulant, we beat it. You beat? Yeah. And it goes granular.
00:59So you can use it instead of white or brown sugar. Oh wow. The maple butter is maple syrup
01:04that we cook more coulant and beat it. Okay. So when, so what do you use this for though?
01:11I guess you can just put it on pancakes too or is it something a little? So you can use
01:14it instead of white or brown sugar if you're baking. Okay. So you don't need as much as
01:19the other sugars and it's a healthier sugar for you. Oh wow. So there's vitamins and nutrients
01:25in it that you don't get in white or brown sugar. Can you actually put this in hot water
01:29and drink it that way? Sure you could. You can put it in your tea or coffee. You can
01:33put it on your porridge. Um, it's good in Greek yogurt. Oh wow. So is this a popular
01:39item I guess? Yes it is. It's becoming more popular as people are wanting to use, um,
01:44powders. Yeah. So they've found that maple syrup is good for diabetics. It doesn't raise
01:50their blood sugar the same as other sweets. Oh excellent. And then the um, and then you
01:58got the big jugs. So that's the cheapest way for a family or someone who's using a lot
02:05of maple syrup. So what I recommend is putting it in a smaller container in the fridge and
02:11then putting the big jug in the freezer. It doesn't freeze solid because of the sugar
02:15content in it. Okay. So you can take it in and out of the freezer. So there's really
02:20no expiry date for maple syrup is there? Um, we like to use it up as quickly as possible
02:26especially within about six months. Okay. You might find sometimes it will go a bit
02:31granular on the bottom. Okay. But you can melt that back down. So it's not like honey
02:36where honey does not expire at all. Yeah. Because that's the only thing that I know
02:40of so far that does not expire. Exactly. So when do you harvest it? So it has to be early
02:48spring. So this year was different though. We made syrup January 30th which is the earliest
02:54we've ever made syrup. So it has to be above freezing in the daytime and freezing at night.
03:01Oh wow. Well thank you so much for your time. My name is Paul. Hi. I'm Jill. Nice to meet
03:06you Jill. Nice to meet you. Thanks for your time.
03:20So hello there. Hi there. So how long have you been doing this for? Well my dad started
03:27in 1946 and we took over from him sometime maybe early 80s, late 70s, I'm not sure when.
03:34Long time. Time goes fast. It does. It really does. So since you've been doing this can
03:41you go to the farm or? Well you can yes. We're not always at the farm because we're busy
03:48and we have nine different bee yards or whatever. Oh wow. So we're busy trying to look after
03:52them but if anybody wanted honey, if they just flown ahead, we can make arrangements
03:56to meet them there. Oh wow. Get them there or whatever. What's your most popular item?
04:01I don't know that there's any one thing that stands out. I mean basically it's honey but
04:07we sell a lot of other stuff too. The candles and the? Yeah there's candles. We sell bees
04:14too like as far as. Oh you sell bees as well. Dukes and hives or whatever. Oh wow. We sell
04:19How often do you sell those? Well for the most part people only want them in the spring.
04:24Of course. It's sort of foolish to buy them in the fall because they might not live the
04:28winter sort of you know. And what, tell me about bees. Like the queen bee is, so basically
04:37they're all male? And the queen bee is a female or? No. How does this work? Okay the queen
04:47certainly is a female. Oh okay. All the worker bees are females too. Oh really? It's just
04:52the queen has been fed a richer diet. Uh huh. Okay and develops different and then it's
04:58fertilized by drones, by the male bees or whatever. Oh. And I don't know what to say
05:07here. Oh that's okay, that's okay. So basically they're worker bees and they obviously get
05:16the pollen and bring it back and feed the queen. Well feed the queen but feed the young
05:23bees too. And the young bees too. Feed the eggs. Oh okay. So the worker bees, the first
05:28three weeks of their life they're in the hive taking care of a number of duties or whatever
05:33but. Oh wow. They feed all the young bees, they feed the eggs, feed the larvae, cap them
05:38over, develop them you know. A lot involved. A lot involved yes. And then the queen bee
05:44has a green dot? Well we mark it with a green dot because it's just easier to spot. Okay.
05:50And it's hard enough even with the dot on it to spot. Yes I noticed. It's hiding under
05:55some other bees or whatever. Oh well thank you so much for your time. What's your name?
05:59Larry. Paul. Nice to meet you. Thank you so much. Okay. Yeah. Thank you.
