00:55:24Triple-A and then I was with Toronto.

00:55:29So they moved me to the outfield and I played left in Triple-A

00:55:31the whole year played like 10 games in center and I get to

00:55:35the September 1st to get called up.

00:55:36We're playing the playing the Yankees in the Sky Dome or

00:55:41Rogers Center wherever they call it now and I go in the

00:55:44clubhouse.

00:55:44I look at the lineup and I'm like, oh shit, you know 9 batting

00:55:499th Worth 9 and I'm like the fuck's 9.

00:55:56Oh shit.

00:55:57I'm playing right field.

00:55:58Yeah.

00:55:58I've never even seen a 9 by my name.

00:56:00Yeah, I was like, okay, so, you know, you don't ever play in

00:56:05stadiums with five decks.

00:56:06You don't ever play in domes, you know when your kid growing

00:56:08up, you know Meyer Leagues, whatever.

00:56:10So my first game is playing right field at Rogers Center.

00:56:13Like we're out there playing catch running sprints before the

00:56:17game and they open the dome and so I'm like, this is fucked,

00:56:20you know, and of course first pitch of the game Alfonso Soriano

00:56:25hits the highest fly ball that I ever caught in my career first

00:56:30first pitch in the big league, but you caught it, but I caught

00:56:32it barely and then my first at bat off a boomer.

00:56:36I hit a bullet down the third baseline and Ron Coomer was playing

00:56:40third that day and he like pick it up and I think he threw it

00:56:43between his legs to second for a double play and like I didn't

00:56:47really get doubled up much in my career, especially when I was

00:56:49younger because I could move a little bit and first at bat in

00:56:52the big leagues is like like a piss missile double play.

00:56:55I'm still on the stand in the box.

00:56:57I'm like fuck.

00:56:58They're doing like Harlan Globetrotter shit.

00:57:00Yeah, exactly.

00:57:01I'll never get a hit.

00:57:03So I ended up getting a getting a hit in the game.

00:57:06I think I had two hits maybe that was a long time ago, but that's

00:57:14So a couple years later, I'm with the Dodgers and I hit a homer

00:57:17off him and and after the game he texts Jeff Weaver as a teammate

00:57:23with with LA and he said, you know, what's up?

00:57:27He's like, oh, do you love him?

00:57:28And and so he comes over and he's like, all right, he's like

00:57:31tell his weave.

00:57:32He's like tell tell Worth to meet me at this address.

00:57:35And so dream he comes over and he's like a boomer wants you to

00:57:40meet him at this address and I'm like, you know, I'm like, I'm

00:57:43a kid.

00:57:44I'm like, well, it's just like a Hells Angels.

00:58:08I've been friends with him ever since and like some American

00:58:14I mean, I've ran into him and we've hung out like, you know,

00:58:1650 times probably I go to his I go to his charity golf event.

00:58:20He's like one of my better friends in baseball that I didn't

00:59:05So double-a was a one with first year with the Blue Jays and

00:59:12they they started playing me at some different positions DH

00:59:15and we had Josh Phelps was there Kevin Cash Guillermo

00:59:19Kira's was like a backlog of catchers with the Blue Jays and

00:59:23I had a big year and double-a that year is like my kind of

00:59:26my breakout minor league season hit like 20 homers and the

00:59:28next year in spring training was been o2 and the Dick Scott

00:59:34was the farm director and he came in and one have a conversation

00:59:37with me since me down.

00:59:38He's like, how would you feel about moving to and before you

00:59:41could even tell me where I was like, yes.

00:59:43Oh, yes, like wherever you're talking about.

00:59:46I will you were done catching.

00:59:47I mean, I wasn't not a very good first baseman, but I would

00:59:49I would have done that all day long instead of catching but

00:59:51it feels like fucking suck.

00:59:53Yeah, but the only thing with catching is it probably sucks

00:59:56beyond belief, but you don't like if you hit 20 home runs as

00:59:59a catcher.

01:00:44came around, you know catching you you couldn't run.

01:00:47I caught over a hundred games four years in a row in the minor

01:00:49leagues.

01:01:05Yeah, I mean from the time I was like hitting t-ball or even

01:01:07before that I did I did sign with the University of Georgia

01:01:11and I was an all-state basketball player State of Illinois.

01:01:13Oh, wow, you know a hot take if I went to Georgia, I was going

01:01:17to try to walk on play hoops.

01:01:19Wow, I don't know if it would have worked but I

01:01:21don't think I had much of a career path in basketball.

01:02:36booed off the field every time I stepped on the field in

01:03:44They kind of asked you to mentor Bryce Harper, which is kind

01:03:47of a weird thing to ask a grown man to do when they're paying

01:03:50another guy a lot of money.

01:03:51But what was that like when he was coming up and it was

01:03:54like, okay, Bryce is the future of the team.

01:03:57Jason is the guy that's going to change the culture and move

01:03:59things around.

01:04:00But we need Jason to make sure that our young guy doesn't

01:04:03screw up too bad.

01:04:04Yeah, I wasn't very good at that.

01:04:07Bryce was an interesting kid.

01:04:08I love Bryce.

01:04:11We were talking about earlier how hard it had to have been

01:04:15to be Bryce Harper or like Alex Rodriguez or somebody

01:04:19that had a lot of fame at a young age.

01:04:22You're the chosen one before your brain is even like half

01:04:26developed.

01:04:26And before you've even done anything in the sport or at

01:04:30the level.

01:04:30I mean, I think Bryce had a tough time in Washington at

01:04:34times.

01:04:35At other times, he was great.

01:04:36MVP one year.

01:04:37We were good.

01:04:38We had good teams in Washington while I was there.

01:04:41But you know, Bryce has moved on to Philly, which is kind

01:04:44of like, you know, funny that that happened with him.

01:04:46And yeah, you know, he's, you know, now he's like the face

01:04:49of MLB, which was kind of what was, you know, how it was

01:04:53supposed to go.

01:04:54Yeah, it was destined for.

01:04:55And he's an awesome.

01:04:57He's a great dad, you know, great teammate, husband.

01:05:00I mean, Bryce has turned into an unbelievable big leaguer.

01:05:09the way, we had some, we had some good times.

01:05:11We had some tough times, but you know, it's all part of

01:05:14growing up in the big leagues.

01:05:14You, you know, the veterans kind of have a hold of the team

01:05:18and the young guys got to, got to fall in line.

01:05:21And you know, Ryan Zimmerman was there, Ian Desmond.

01:05:25I mean, he had a lot of, a lot of good, good guys.

01:05:27We had good teams in Washington.

01:05:28I mean, that was one thing that's cool about my career is

01:05:30I've always played on good teams.

01:05:32Yeah, what about, so a moment you were a little later in

01:05:35your career, the, the, the famous Papa Bond versus Bryce,

01:05:38like scuffle in the DC Strangler came out.

01:05:42Were you, where were you when that was going down and what,

01:05:47how does that get resolved?

01:05:49I mean, Pap was just on a podcast talking about this.

01:10:03field every day like with the mentality and the thought is

01:10:11you know, so that's kind of the mentality at the end of the

01:10:15day when the game starts, you know, you're all in it together.

01:10:21But because I remember you had a good team.

01:10:26and just how the people upstairs, they read books and do math

01:13:52When we're watching that at-bat, at home, it's like every

01:13:56single pitch, you get more and more nervous as a fan.

01:13:58When you're in the box going through that at-bat, are

01:14:01you like, fuck, another foul ball.

01:14:10So that bullpen, that Cardinal bullpen that year was the

01:14:18And that was like the new-age bullpen.

01:15:06catcher of all time.

01:15:07He went to frame it and just kind of hit off the bottom

01:15:10of his mitt.

01:15:12You know, if he catches it, I get, I'm done.

01:15:13So, then I went to 3-2.

01:15:16I was like, I fucking got him.

01:15:17And I fouled a ball off and the next pitch, I shot him.

01:15:20And it was like a pretty cool moment for DC and for me,

01:15:24obviously, coming, signing that big deal and kind of sucking

01:15:28the first year, getting the organization turned around

01:15:30the right direction.

01:15:31And then, you know, I broke my wrist and that year in 2012,

01:15:35I had all these wrist problems when I was younger.

01:15:38And so, then I break my wrist, you know, second year in

01:15:40Washington.

01:15:41It's just like, oh my God, I'm gonna, these things cannot

01:15:45And the team plays great.

01:15:47We're like best team in baseball.

01:15:48I come back off the DL and end up hitting like 3-10 or 12

01:15:53or something that year.

01:15:54And then got that hit.

01:15:55But the next day, I lead off with a double and we go up

01:15:59like six, seven runs.

01:16:00And then we end up fucking losing that game.

01:16:03You know, we were just so snake bit in the playoffs.

01:16:06We had that 18 inning game against the Giants that we couldn't

01:16:09win.

01:16:10Then we, you know, it's just like, then we go to San Fran,

01:16:12we needed to win a game and like, you know, all hell breaks

01:16:15loose.

01:16:16We got, you know, it's just, it was weird.

01:16:18It was like, it was like, we just, we just weren't meant

01:16:22The series against the Cubs that year.

01:16:29know, when they went and played the Dodgers the next round,

01:16:44I felt like we were, we were just hitting our stride.

01:16:46So it was like, if we could ever gotten through the first

01:16:48round, I mean, I thought every time we were in the playoffs,

01:29:09grow marijuana license a few years back and we got it.

01:34:37lost we've been tied going to the last game of the season,

01:34:39but then we were up so and then the next day I Charlie told me

01:34:42I wasn't playing so I was like sitting in there and my shoes

01:34:45off had my spikes off and then Jimmy comes in and says, hey,

01:34:52It's like the ninth inning or something like that.

01:34:54I'm like, I'm up like all right.

01:34:59So I throw my shoes on I got 19 stolen bases on the year and

01:56:07Just how hard was that course especially with the wind like

01:56:11in regular golfer terms, like how bad would we be on that

01:56:15course?

01:56:19Yeah, because it seemed it seemed miserable at times.

01:56:23Saturday was Saturday was really bad, you know with a little

01:56:26bit of wind and rain.

01:56:28It was it would have been a good day to watch golf on TV.

01:56:32No doubt.

01:56:33Yeah, it's much more fun.

01:56:34I would imagine seeing on TV than being even a spectator at

01:56:37that that golf tournament because you're dealing with the

01:56:39rain the wind the elements the the the patrons of Royal Troon

01:56:43have a hard time just like the golfers congratulations, like

01:56:47Big Cat said very happy for you got to know your dad said he

01:56:51was going to drink wine out of the clear jug.

01:56:53Did you get to drink something out of the jug before he did

01:57:18I mean, but it mean it was his first major because he obviously

01:57:22wasn't there for when you won your first.

01:57:24So how like what was it like having him there?

01:57:27First of all, when we saw him he you didn't do him justice.

01:57:30He's a Haas and I mean that in the best way possible like an

01:57:33intimidating guy had the hat on was drinking out of a flask.

01:57:37But what was it like?

01:57:38Like what was it like after the the round and just like getting

01:57:42to actually celebrate it with him for the first time?

01:57:46You know the when I called him after Valhalla how he looked

01:57:51on TV was exactly how he sounded on the phone after Valhalla.

01:57:55So if you want to put those two together, he's a he is an ugly

01:58:22to deliver this one to him in person is probably the coolest

01:58:26thing and I don't know if I can top that, you know, the gold

01:58:28medal was up there, but this is you know, right there with it.

01:58:31I mean it was very it was it was an awesome Sunday to watch

01:58:34you were so locked in.

01:58:36Did you at what hole maybe it was in the back nine?

01:58:39Maybe it was in the front nine, but I feel like it was the

01:58:41But what hole were you like the I'm here.

01:58:44I'm locked in.

01:58:47After I birdied 14.

01:58:50I was able to there's a huge board on 15 and I 15 is such a

01:58:54hard hole, but it was you know, like crazy left to right and

01:58:57I was like you can I've hit that fairway every day and I was

01:59:00like you just got hit this very one more time kid.

01:59:02I was like just hit the fairway and you're going to have like

01:59:04a wedge or nine iron or eight iron in and after I hit that

01:59:07fairway get you know, like little fist pump inside because

01:59:11I was like, okay, we're dancing like this is you know, this

01:59:14is my tournament to lose like I only I can mess this one up.

01:59:17So a little bit of added pressure in that moment, but I

01:59:21felt like I really took control after I birdied 14.

01:59:24Yeah.

01:59:25Yeah was did the did the thought of like a van de Velde even

01:59:29enter your mind because I feel like if I was if I was winning

01:59:33at the Open Championship, I wouldn't be able to stop myself

01:59:36from thinking about it.

01:59:37I just be like keep your shoes on.

01:59:39That's incredible.

01:59:41Luckily, there were no burns ripping through the rest of

01:59:44the property.

01:59:45So I really I took a really deep breath after I hit the 17th

01:59:49green.

01:59:50It's a very difficult hole after I hit that green.

01:59:53I took a huge huge breath because I knew you know, I had

01:59:55at least a two shot lead.

01:59:57I was expecting guys to birdie 16 behind me, but I knew that

02:00:01I was in a really good spot and you know, 18 is iron iron,

02:00:05you know, I hit three iron eight iron, you know, so it wasn't

02:00:08it's not to have a two or three shot lead going into 18.

02:00:11It's a very nice thing to have because yeah, it is, you know,

02:00:14not the most intimidating tee shot with an iron.

02:00:16Yeah, somewhat idiot proof at that point.

02:00:18I feel like in the open the the caddies do a lot of great work

02:00:22for the golfers maybe more so than in some other tournaments

02:00:25because you have to know as you're approaching each green

02:00:27like you have to hit you have to land some of your shots 10

02:00:30yards 15 yards short of the green are they giving you specific

02:00:33spots and like how much time did your caddy spend studying

02:00:37all the hills and all the slopes that are right at the front

02:00:40of that green?

02:00:41Yeah, so, you know, Austin's my boy.

02:00:43He's been caddying for me since you know, I'm my dad caddy

02:00:46me caddy for me for a few events and he got canned but guys

02:00:49guys has been with me for ever since I've been playing and

02:00:53corn fairy up through the tour and he's incredible.

02:00:57He does a really good job and I definitely feel like he gives

02:01:00me that sort of edge or advantage that you were talking

02:01:02about on properties that you know, aren't super known on

02:01:05tour, you know, whenever we play us opens or opens or PGA.

02:01:09So there's these big championship style golf courses where

02:01:12more information the better especially if you haven't played

02:01:15it much and you know, guys guys is he's good for walking,

02:01:18you know, I mean he has that little Apple watch or whatever

02:01:21and you know, I think last year at the open he locked like

02:01:2430,000 steps one day.

02:01:26So he's just out there walking trying to like you said figure

02:01:30out every little mogul every little bounce where it can go

02:01:34can't go all those types of things and he's funny, you know

02:01:39on 14 it was a really big moment because I was kind of like

02:01:41I might hit five iron and he was like it's a six iron and

02:01:45I was like, okay.

02:01:47It's a six iron.

02:01:48I was like this is aggressive.

02:01:49He's like just hit it between the bunkers.

02:01:50I don't know if you guys remember that part.

02:01:51Yeah, two coffins like the flagstick and then two coffins

02:01:55in the green and he's like just hit it between the bunkers

02:01:58and of course I was so locked in I hit it in between the

02:02:01bunker.

02:02:02It's like a really good iron shot in there to like whatever

02:02:0312 feet and I remember after I hit the shot.

02:02:05I looked at him.

02:02:06I was like just hit it between the bunkers.

02:02:10Yeah, just hit it up just hole out.

02:02:19Obviously golf is so much mental and this year has been incredible

02:02:23for you with two majors and you were going into this year.

02:02:27One of the guys that was like, hey, can he win the big one

02:02:30because he's been so good, but he hasn't won a major.

02:02:33So after you win the first one, you're winning the second

02:02:35one. Was it easier mentally?

02:02:37Did you feel like hey, I've been here.

02:02:39I know it the pressure isn't the same as it was during the

02:02:42first one and is it does it feel kind of like the the top

02:02:45is off now like this is the sky's the limit.

02:02:49Yeah, I mean the expectations are gonna have to get reeled

02:02:51in here.

02:02:52You know, I don't think I would have won this one if I you

02:02:54know, my head was, you know through the roof for too long,

02:02:57but that's going to be something I need to work on just

02:02:59to you know, set the bar right and then keep moving along

02:03:01like we've always been moving along.

02:03:02But yeah, I mean totally different feelings for both.

02:03:07I was significantly more nervous at the PGA just the back

02:03:11and forth holes playing a little bit easier.

02:03:15The style of golf was so different and then you know, everyone

02:03:17was so bunched up.

02:03:19Not that people weren't bunched up at this one, but the

02:03:21back nine at this true and golf course is so freaking hard

02:03:24and if you hit good shots and you make birdies on these

02:03:28holes where no one else is making birdies, you will you

02:03:30will gain an advantage and so to me, you know, I wouldn't

02:03:34have been as calm at Troon if it wasn't for Valhalla, but

02:03:37I was way more nervous at Valhalla than I was at Troon.

02:03:39So it's kind of funny how the two kind of paired up and

02:03:42how different they were.

02:03:43Yeah.

02:03:43So I got a tip for you because if we're trying to stay

02:03:46humble not go, you know, go through the roof.
