The third installment of Irish author Roddy Doyle's 'Barrytown Trilogy', following 'The Commitments' and 'The Snapper', depicts the hilarious yet poignant adventures of Bimbo. Upon being fired from his job at the bakery, Bimbo and his best mate go into business for themselves and purchase a chipper (a fish and chips van); but will the pressures of financial success sour their friendship forever?
In November 1989, in Ireland, the baker Bimbo is fired from his job and he does not feel comfortable with the situation. His best friend Larry, who is also unemployed and living with his low welfare with his wife Mary and their children, is resigned with his situation and tries to console his friend. But Bimbo is supported by his wife Maggie and decides to buy an abandoned van without engine in a junkyard to open a business of hamburger, French fries and fried codfish and invites Larry to work with him. Soon they have financial success but their friendship is compromised.

00:00:00See your team got beat again last night. Stop. He has to go. Useless.
00:00:12What's wrong with you? Are you alright?
00:00:22I've got a bit of bad news today. Knocked me back a bit. I was let go.
00:00:30What?
00:00:31Let go. Made redundant. Unlike you now, lady. A man of leisure. It's gas, isn't it?
00:00:41Well, how come?
00:00:43Ten of us got letters. The chap from the office says they'll be getting their cakes from England.
00:00:48The only way they can compete.
00:00:51The prick.
00:00:53Bastard.
00:00:55We can keep each other company now.
00:00:58Yeah, fucking sure.
00:01:02My father, God rest him, got me in there.
00:01:06That's right.
00:01:07Never forgot coming home with my first wage packet.
00:01:11Ran all the way with my hand in my pocket to stop my money from falling out.
00:01:16In a bag of fruit slices.
00:01:19I was more excited about them than I was about the money.
00:01:22I knew my sisters would go mad when they saw them.
00:01:25Marise, your one has epilepsy, did I tell you?
00:01:30No. Is that right?
00:01:37Alright, come on. There's people looking at you.
00:01:45Well, what am I going to do, lady?
00:01:52You were the poxy baker, eh?
00:01:54No, no, no. There's no bleeding need for that.
00:02:00Come here. Come here. This lump sum, how much will you be getting?
00:02:04Don't tell him.
00:02:05I don't know. A few thousand. I don't know.
00:02:08We ain't got bleeding nothing.
00:02:11He'll crack up without something to do.
00:02:13You shut up, the fuck. There's loads of things for him to do.
00:02:15Like what?
00:02:17Do up his house.
00:02:18His house is already done up. It's like fucking Graceland.
00:02:22His garden, then. There's loads of things for him to do.
00:02:25Shut up, Delirious. A toast.
00:02:28Yeah, cheers.
00:02:30To unemployment.
00:02:32To unemployment.
00:02:35Row, row, row the boat.
00:02:40Gently down the stream.
00:02:44Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily.
00:02:48Life is but a dream.
00:02:52Hey.
00:02:55Sugar folks?
00:02:56No, got them.
00:02:58Shedded wee?
00:02:59Yuck!
00:03:00No, something. I've definitely forgotten something. I can feel it.
00:03:04Stop fighting there.
00:03:08I shall be at work.
00:03:10Ah, love, there'll be more work.
00:03:12For when?
00:03:17Stop fighting now, or these go. Now!
00:03:27Well, bleeding time.
00:03:32You coming for a game?
00:03:33No.
00:03:34Come on, why not?
00:03:35I've to bring the kids swimming.
00:03:37No, you don't. The water will still be there tomorrow.
00:03:40And the day after tomorrow.
00:03:42I hate swimming.
00:03:52Come on.
00:03:55Right sleeve, left sleeve.
00:03:57I don't want to. You'll only beat me again.
00:03:59I'll give you shots.
00:04:00I don't want shots.
00:04:01Shut up.
00:04:03Keep your head down.
00:04:06Club back.
00:04:13Now then.
00:04:14What?
00:04:15Hit it.
00:04:18I can't.
00:04:19Of course you can. Go on.
00:04:21I can't.
00:04:23You're making me nervous.
00:04:25The eyes are closed, look at.
00:04:32Good man, lovely.
00:04:34Uncle James.
00:04:38Hey, you fucking clown.
00:04:40Sorry.
00:04:41Now I am done.
00:04:45I'm keeping your fucking ball for that.
00:04:50Auntie, we might be in luck.
00:04:52Come on.
00:04:53It should be on at night, you know.
00:04:55It's good enough to be.
00:04:58Oh, no one, Jesus.
00:05:05Here we are, bang on time.
00:05:07Now sit down there.
00:05:09And now ladies and gentlemen, Theresa Lowe.
00:05:11Your woman's a fine thing, isn't she?
00:05:13And welcome to where in the world where two more teams
00:05:17How many sugars do you take?
00:05:18One and a bit.
00:05:19Grand.
00:05:25And I can't get used to not living next door to Alice.
00:05:31Alice.
00:05:32Alice.
00:05:33Who the fuck is Alice?
00:05:41How are you, Mary?
00:05:46How was work?
00:05:47Great.
00:05:48Loads of dirt on the carpets.
00:05:49I love that.
00:06:10I have Bimbo inside.
00:06:13Trying to cheer him up.
00:06:14Show him the ropes, you know.
00:06:18George Elliot.
00:06:20Ever heard of him?
00:06:22Her.
00:06:25Well, I'm thinking of taking a few classes myself.
00:06:29You're too late.
00:06:31You'll have to wait until next year.
00:06:33Oh, well.
00:06:38There.
00:06:42That's better, huh?
00:06:44Thanks.
00:06:46Don't mention it.
00:06:52I'll leave you alone.
00:06:58Have you heard of him yet?
00:07:00Won't you?
00:07:01The prizes are overshot.
00:07:03I never heard of him.
00:07:04You did, Axel.
00:07:06You fucking didn't.
00:07:07You fucking did.
00:07:08Swearbox, ma.
00:07:09I was only quoting him.
00:07:11Axel.
00:07:12Take me back to Paradise City where the grass is green and the girls are pretty.
00:07:17Yo, ma.
00:07:19Give us a look at that.
00:07:22Now, which one is Axel?
00:07:25Oh, it's one of the young ones screaming, they say.
00:07:28Look at the state of him.
00:07:29He's only jealous.
00:07:30So what about you?
00:07:32Look at the state of you.
00:07:34Don't forget who paid for that dinner in front of your son, right?
00:07:36I know who paid for it.
00:07:38The state.
00:07:41You prick.
00:07:42Stop that.
00:07:44Swearbox, now, go on.
00:07:48This is lovely.
00:07:53The Jacks.
00:07:54I'll be back in a minute.
00:07:59Stop it.
00:08:01I'm only joking.
00:08:02Stop.
00:08:32It's a lot better than nothing, love.
00:08:34After 25 years.
00:08:36We'll find plenty to do with it anyway.
00:08:38We'll have a nice Christmas.
00:08:39The last one.
00:08:40Stop it.
00:08:47We could get two chickens.
00:08:48They taste just as nice.
00:08:50No way.
00:08:51It's a fucking turkey or nothing.
00:08:54Look, we'll write everything down and see what we can get away with.
00:08:58What's that point?
00:09:00Larry.
00:09:03All right, go on, then.
00:09:18Presents first.
00:09:20Nothing for you and me.
00:09:22Okay?
00:09:23Yeah.
00:09:25Diane?
00:09:27Look, a couple hundred quid for my money lender.
00:09:29You know what?
00:09:30No, Larry.
00:09:34Diane doesn't mind.
00:09:36She doesn't need anything.
00:09:42What about Kevin?
00:09:44Jesus, I fucking hate it.
00:09:50Yeah.
00:09:58Those affect me bollocks.
00:10:00It was lovely earlier, though.
00:10:02You wouldn't know what to wear, so you wouldn't.
00:10:05Wish you had a decent fucking coat.
00:10:10Still asleep.
00:10:12Just as well.
00:10:14She makes enough noise, doesn't she, Bimbo?
00:10:17That's what they're supposed to do at her age.
00:10:21She's lovely.
00:10:23Isn't she, Bimbo?
00:10:28Wish I could sleep like that.
00:10:40Graceful, huh?
00:10:41Mm.
00:10:42Graceful.
00:10:44All right, go on now, quick, quick.
00:10:46Okay.
00:10:47Quick.
00:10:48I'll go.
00:10:53There you go.
00:10:59Couple of hours.
00:11:04Keep shape.
00:11:08Fuck you.
00:11:14It's a grand smell coming from the kitchen, what?
00:11:22What's that?
00:11:37Fuller.
00:11:43Oh, hey, Wesley.
00:11:44Happy Christmas.
00:11:45Happy Christmas.
00:11:46Come on.
00:11:51Ah, there's the man.
00:11:52How he is?
00:11:53Happy Christmas.
00:11:54Happy Christmas.
00:11:56Get that fucking penny off you, will you?
00:12:07How are you, Vera?
00:12:08Grand, Larry.
00:12:09Happy Christmas now.
00:12:12The girls are in the kitchen.
00:12:13Good for them.
00:12:18How are you, missus?
00:12:22Yeah, she's looking better than she did last year.
00:12:24Barely.
00:12:25Bimbo, there's a funny whiff of your mammy-in-law.
00:12:29Ass!
00:12:30Oh, I'm serious.
00:12:32Go over.
00:12:33Bimbo, the smell is fucking atrocious.
00:12:37Oh, my God.
00:12:42Does she have to do something to herself?
00:12:44Well, it could just be a fart, but I'll check it out.
00:12:49Oh, I can smell something meself.
00:12:52Bimbo, this could be on your Christmas dinner.
00:13:00He did this to his brother last night.
00:13:02The exact same thing.
00:13:08I can't smell anything.
00:13:09Oh, you must have a cold, because I'll tell you.
00:13:11It's getting fucking worse.
00:13:13It isn't, is it?
00:13:16God, this is desperate.
00:13:18How are you, Vera?
00:13:19How are you, Wesley?
00:13:20Happy Christmas.
00:13:21Never mind Christmas.
00:13:22Your mother.
00:13:23She has a name, you know.
00:13:25That's not all she has, chicken.
00:13:29Fuck, sorry.
00:13:39It has to be here.
00:13:41I've seen it landing.
00:13:43Look, say to yourself, ah, fuck it.
00:13:46I'm giving up.
00:13:47Start walking away.
00:13:48Then you'll find it.
00:13:54Can he look?
00:13:55No.
00:13:57He usually works.
00:13:59I've got the spare one with me.
00:14:00Come on.
00:14:02Come on, come on.
00:14:04Be 20, be 20, be 20.

00:14:24No, it's your money.
00:14:25Sure, you were standing beside me.
00:14:27Hey, he'll pay.
00:14:29And it's done, Ron.
00:14:31Come on in on the stand side, sir.
00:14:32Eat, eat, eat.
00:14:40Queuing in this weather for a bag of food poisoning.
00:14:42Yeah.
00:14:43You have to hand it to the Vietnamese, but come on.
00:14:45This will be nice.
00:14:52I gave her a packet of scampi fries.
00:14:55That's not a dinner.
00:14:56Come on, Kerry.
00:14:58We're going.
00:15:00I'm sorry.
00:15:03What about a drink before you go?
00:15:05No.
00:15:06All right, bye-bye, little love.
00:15:09This is grand, huh?
00:15:10Oh, yeah, great.
00:15:11What time is it, anyway?
00:15:12Seven bells.
00:15:13Jesus, tonight Maggie will have given me dinner to the cat.
00:15:16Then eat the fucking cat.
00:15:18Sit down, for Jesus' sake.
00:15:21The Vietnamese will feed us later.
00:15:24So what by goes to the hatch like?
00:15:25Name, Jerry McCarthy.
00:15:28He's looking at me, though, over the specks like.
00:15:31You're not Jerry McCarthy, he says.
00:15:33I am, I says.
00:15:34You're not, he says.
00:15:35I fucking am, I says.
00:15:37Does anyone want a kettle jug?
00:15:38How much?
00:15:39I know Jerry McCarthy, sissy, and you're not him.
00:15:42You're fucking idiot, I says.
00:15:44Do you think there's more than one Jerry McCarthy in the whole of fucking Ireland?
00:15:47I mean, there's me father, me grandfather.
00:15:49I have seven cousins called Jerry McCarthy.
00:15:51There's 18 of us in the one area phone book.
00:15:54He's still looking at me, though.
00:15:55Here, give us me money, I says, or me and the other Jerry McCarthy's will beat the fucking head off you.
00:16:01Kettle jugs, lads.
00:16:0215 pound per, 25 pound per chill.
00:16:04No.
00:16:05No.
00:16:08Fair enough.
00:16:09No problem.
00:16:10You wouldn't have a chipper van, I suppose, would you, Wesley?
00:16:15Just a tart.
00:16:16What about a Mr. Whippy?
00:16:18No.
00:16:20You've your heart set on a chipper van?
00:16:22Yeah.
00:16:23Not really.
00:16:24Just if you see one.
00:16:27I'll see what I can do.
00:16:28I'll see what I can do.
00:16:29Here on the stilts you and me.
00:16:32My grandfather and me.
00:16:35Woo!
00:16:36A realm that's not so great in Rome.
00:16:44That's a waste of good fucking money.
00:16:47Bimbo, come here.
00:16:48Here.
00:16:49What?
00:16:50The fresh air will fix you.
00:16:51There's nothing wrong with me.
00:16:53Shit.
00:16:55Where have you gone?
00:16:57How?
00:16:58To get in the mist.
00:17:00They have to get out before it gets dark.
00:17:03Or they get bricked over by the kids.
00:17:06Because they're foreign?
00:17:07I suppose so.
00:17:09There you go.
00:17:10There we go.
00:17:16The lads.
00:17:18What are you up to?
00:17:20We're waiting on your wife.
00:17:23None of your lip.
00:17:24Now, would that be this lip or that lip?
00:17:29My name is Gerry McCarthy.
00:17:34Do we know that fella's wife?
00:17:40Fucking devil.
00:17:43What's wrong with you?
00:17:45Me fucking shoe.
00:17:47Show me.
00:17:49Here.
00:17:51You're useless.
00:17:54You didn't keep biting your nails.
00:17:57Here.
00:18:09Bimbo's talking about buying a chipper van.
00:18:12Yeah, well, take your clothes off.
00:18:14No.
00:18:16Goodnight, John boy.
00:18:19Goodnight, Mary Ellen.
00:18:46It's a book where I read this.
00:18:55You're not serious.
00:18:57I knew you'd say that.
00:18:58McDonald's, Bimbo.
00:19:00I'm just writing to them, that's all.
00:19:02They won't want you.
00:19:04They only want young ones and young things that'll take those wages and wear the fucking uniforms.
00:19:09Not grown up men like you, like us.
00:19:12I'm just writing.
00:19:16You're used to this.
00:19:19What?
00:19:21I'm used to what?
00:19:22Go on.
00:19:24Doing nothing.
00:19:26Do you think I like it?
00:19:28Do you think I'm lazy?
00:19:30Do you?
00:19:31No.
00:19:32Well, then.
00:19:34You bollocks, you.
00:19:36A great fucking man.
00:19:39I can't even go into my own house, Larry, to make room for me.
00:19:44Darling.
00:19:46Darling.

00:20:02What?
00:20:03Just come on.

00:20:46There's three more behind there.
00:20:48That'll save you a few, bub.
00:20:52Jesus.
00:20:53All she needs is a wash and a shave under the armpits.
00:20:59Which end does it shine out of?
00:21:01It's just dirt.
00:21:04It's just dirt.
00:21:05It's just dirt.
00:21:06It's just dirt.
00:21:07It's just dirt.
00:21:08It's just dirt.

00:21:21You've some fucking neck.
00:21:22Do you know that?
00:21:23What is that?
00:21:24Trying to get poor Bimbo to throw his money away on this yoke.
00:21:27I'm not trying to get Bimbo to throw his money away on anything.
00:21:29She's a good boy.
00:21:31Solid.
00:21:32Dirt'll wash off, no problem.
00:21:34There's more than dirt, man.
00:21:35Listen.
00:21:36This has nothing got to do with you.
00:21:38I'm only expressing my opinion.
00:21:39Stick your fucking opinion.
00:21:40Where's the hatch?
00:21:42Do you know, you're starting to fucking annoy me now.
00:22:00Jesus.
00:22:01Who'd want to live like this, huh?
00:22:04They should be fucking ashamed of themselves.
00:22:07It's not they.
00:22:08It's just he.
00:22:11She fucked off and left him?
00:22:13Kids and all.
00:22:15Oh, that's rough.
00:22:18Why'd she leave him?
00:22:19I don't know.
00:22:22He's ugly, but...
00:22:25What's she like?
00:22:27I don't know.
00:22:29Fucking kids are ugly as well.
00:22:35Oh, my God.
00:22:36Maggie.
00:22:37Use your imagination.
00:22:39A few minutes with a hose and some water.
00:22:41A few hours, maybe a few hours with a paint scraper.
00:22:45She'd be perfect.
00:22:50It's all there.
00:22:52Like all the equipment and that.
00:22:56It's a bit...
00:23:04What about the engine?
00:23:09What engine would that be, Maggie?
00:23:30Hey, Larry.
00:23:31Are you pushing it or riding it?
00:23:33Fuck off.
00:23:34Larry, the kids.
00:23:35Fuck them.
00:23:40Fuck off.
00:23:48Put your back into it, Larry.
00:23:53What am I fucking doing?
00:24:09Oh, shit.
00:24:26That was gas, wasn't it?
00:24:27Yeah.
00:24:28The more I look at it, the more I think we'll have to get in a bargain.
00:24:32God, I love him.
00:24:39I can't take the bubbles.
00:24:41I was thinking,
00:24:42we'll have to have it ready in time for the World Cup.
00:24:45There'll be no cooking done once it's started.
00:24:47Everyone will be watching the telly.
00:24:48So will I.
00:24:51It should be smashing.
00:24:56Do you want to be my partner, Larry?
00:25:00What's that?
00:25:01I was talking to Maggie about it.
00:25:03We'd make a great team.
00:25:05Jesus, that's pretty much been about...
00:25:08I don't know.
00:25:09You'd be doing me a favour.
00:25:11Oh, I know that.
00:25:15Thanks very much.

00:25:39Hang on a second.
00:25:41Do I have to help you clean it?
00:25:55Mary.
00:25:57What?
00:25:58You awake?
00:25:59Only if you're awake.
00:26:01Go on.
00:26:08How did he make these?
00:26:10Jesus.
00:26:13I don't think they make them.
00:26:15I think they just find them.
00:26:26There.
00:26:28Thank you.
00:26:29You're welcome.
00:26:38Okay, turn her off.
00:26:40You turn it off.
00:26:41I heard you.
00:26:43What colour is it supposed to be, anyway?
00:26:45White.
00:26:46Will you switch it on to the hot tap?
00:26:48I used up all the hot do in the clothes.
00:26:51Oh, God almighty.
00:26:53I'm sorry.
00:26:54I'm sorry.

00:27:05I'm sorry.
00:27:06Oh, God almighty.
00:27:10How did it get grease on the outsides?
00:27:12God knows.
00:27:14God, Lenny, it's going to take ages.
00:27:16Not at all.
00:27:17It's half an inch thick.

00:28:11Of course.
00:28:12Will you open the door?
00:28:13Will you come on?
00:28:14Will you get out?
00:28:15Watch me.
00:28:17Oh, fuck.
00:28:21Kerry's asleep above us.
00:28:23Sorry.
00:28:26Sorry.
00:28:28Took me ages to make them chips.
00:28:30Diane, is it similar when you say something is like something else?
00:28:33Yeah, I think so.
00:28:34As black as coal.
00:28:35Right, as white as snow.
00:28:36Thanks.
00:28:38I have one for you.
00:28:41Me chips are burnt as fuck.
00:28:45I'm sorry.
00:28:53Do you want a job, Diane?

00:28:58I'm looking in as well.
00:28:59Oh, yeah.
00:29:00Thanks very much.
00:29:01No problem.
00:29:02It'd be nice.
00:29:03A job.
00:29:06She'd be great.
00:29:07I know that.
00:29:08I never said different.
00:29:09Well, then.
00:29:10Staff appointments should be a giant decision
00:29:13between the two of us.
00:29:16Yeah.
00:29:17Sorry.
00:29:19I'll tell her we don't want her.
00:29:20Not at all.
00:29:21No way.
00:29:23Just, in future, we make these decisions together.
00:29:26Is that all right?
00:29:27Oh, yeah.
00:29:28No problem.
00:29:29She will be good, but...

00:29:33Sorry, er...
00:29:34Ah, no, no, no.

00:30:33It has to be done.
00:30:52Not the best.
00:31:03It's like the inside of a leper.
00:31:06Just a squirt gets the dirt.
00:31:12Let's get a bit of light in here, anyway.
00:31:14All right, all right, all right.
00:31:17Oh, good Jesus!

00:32:03They're messing in there, Bimbo.
00:32:05They're no messing, now, lads.
00:32:06Take it easy.
00:32:09You know, Kevin's no tick, either.
00:32:11He's doing seven honours and he's leaving.
00:32:13Seven.
00:32:14That's smashing.
00:32:16Brian's the boy.
00:32:17Good-looking, as well.
00:32:19Then there's Mary doing her leaving.
00:32:21That Brian's pouring out of the house
00:32:22every time they open the fucking door.
00:32:24We're lucky men.
00:32:26Who are you telling?
00:32:35Are you sure she's a painting student?
00:32:38She is, yeah.
00:32:39In a college, Maggie says.
00:32:42She can't draw a straight fucking line.
00:32:44Shh.

00:35:59We need a mop.
00:36:00We need a fucking engine.
00:36:02Come on, will you?
00:36:03No, lady.
00:36:04We've got to get it ready.
00:36:05Business is business.
00:36:09We'd better not miss her.
00:36:10We won't.
00:36:11We'd better not.

00:36:29Won by Butcher.
00:36:31Now here's Sheedy.
00:36:34Sheedy's won it back.
00:36:35And Sheedy shoots.
00:36:36Yeah!
00:36:37Yeah!
00:36:43Yeah!
00:36:44It's going to take a moment of inspiration like that
00:36:46to break through.
00:36:48And Kevin Sheedy
00:36:50has right out of nothing
00:36:52conjured the equaliser.
00:36:55Truly stupendous strike
00:36:57by the Everton midfielder.
00:37:00A goal all of his own making.
00:37:02Diving in the wind.
00:37:03Not going to mind.
00:37:09And now with
00:37:10less than 30 seconds of normal time to go
00:37:13Ireland have a throw.
00:37:16Ray Houghton.
00:37:18Tony Cascarino.
00:37:20McLaughlin trying to get in there.
00:37:21Robson getting it away.
00:37:24McCarthy happy to let it roll out of play.
00:37:29English thoughts that
00:37:31there could be
00:37:33more than a draw in it.
00:37:35But it's a great result for Ireland.
00:37:38A point certainly lost by England.
00:37:58We better get going.
00:37:59All right, you lead the way. Go on.
00:38:08Come on.
