00:00How's it going, y'all?
00:01It's Dalton Trigg, Editor-in-Chief, Dallas Basketball, and
00:05lead host of Mav Step Back Podcast, coming to you to briefly recap
00:09what appears to be the final touches of the Dallas Mavericks offseason,
00:14which has arguably been the best offseason in team history.
00:18Obviously, they went out and signed future Hall of Famer, Clay Thompson.
00:23We talked about that extensively both on dallasbasketball.com and
00:29our Mav Step Back Podcast, but he is going to add an intriguing element
00:35to this Mav's team, especially on the offensive end.
00:39Because, I mean, already, Luka and Kyrie, best backcourt in the NBA,
00:45almost unstoppable with just them.
00:47And now, you subtract Tim Hardaway Jr., essentially, and
00:52plug in Clay Thompson, who is 34 years old, but he's still got a lot of
00:57great basketball ahead of him, especially in a lesser role than what he had to be
01:02for the Golden State Warriors during those championship years.
01:05So that's gonna be a plus for the Mavs.
01:07They also got Quentin Grimes.
01:10He had some good run with the New York Knicks, and
01:13then he was previously with the Detroit Pistons, and
01:15he was in that trade for Tim Hardaway Jr.
01:18And then Najee Marshall was signed in free agency, too.
01:22And that's a sneaky pickup for the Mavs, because I know it's gonna hurt
01:26losing Derrick Jones Jr., but I think Najee Marshall fills that role really well.
01:32He's bigger than Derrick Jones Jr.
01:35He can shoot the ball better than Derrick Jones Jr.
01:39He might not be as equipped to guard the smaller dynamic guards like Jones was,
01:46but Najee Marshall is gonna fill in just fine for Derrick Jones Jr.
01:51So everyone's excited about that.
01:54Obviously, Clay Thompson is the biggest thing.
01:55And now, with the Mavs having one roster spot left,
02:00there was a lot of talk about, would it be Dennis Smith Jr.?
02:03Would it be Spencer Dinwiddie?
02:06We were told that the Mavs worked out Malachi Flynn at one point.
02:10There's a lot of different names that were popping up, and
02:14sure enough, it ended up being Spencer Dinwiddie.
02:17And we have all of that detailed for you at dallasbasketball.com.
02:22We had the breaking news piece when he agreed to sign with the Mavs on July 22nd.
02:28It's a one-year deal.
02:29We assume it's a veteran minimum deal for Spencer Dinwiddie.
02:33And look, he ended up beating out, or
02:38the Mavs ended up beating out the Lakers for Spencer Dinwiddie.
02:41So that's two for two now.
02:43The Mavs beat out the Lakers for Clay Thompson, and
02:45now they've beaten out the Lakers for Spencer Dinwiddie this summer too.
02:50And we've got all of this, all the Spencer Dinwiddie coverage you can
02:54possibly want over at dallasbasketball.com.
02:57So be sure to go there and check us out.
02:59And check out all of our other stuff too that we've been,
03:02this is technically the dead point in the NBA offseason, but
03:06there's never a dead point at dallasbasketball.com.
03:09We keep the content churning out daily.
03:11So if it's anything that can even possibly be relative to the Mavs in some way,
03:17we have it up over there.
03:18But Spencer Dinwiddie, as far as a last roster spot guy,
03:24couldn't have picked a better fit.
03:26He's played the best basketball of his career with the Mavs.
03:29He only played 76 games with the Mavs over two half seasons.
03:33But one of those was, it ended with a Western Conference Finals run.
03:38And if the three-headed monster of Luka, Jalen Brunson, and
03:43Spencer Dinwiddie can get to the Western Conference Finals without
03:47a decent front court, you have to think the three-headed guard monster of Luka Doncic,
03:52Kyrie Irving, and Spencer Dinwiddie can do some damage now that the Mavs have
03:56a fully well-rounded roster, their front court is not what it was in 2022.
04:01You got Derek Lively, you got Daniel Gafford, you got PJ Washington.
04:06So all of that factors into this being a great
04:12bottom of the barrel signing, so to speak, for the Mavs.
04:14And Spencer Dinwiddie, he chose the Lakers after he was bought out last season,
04:20and I think he realizes that was a mistake.
04:22He knows the Mavs organization is where he needs to be.
04:26I think it was a great pickup for the Mavs.
04:28So coming off an NBA Finals loss to the Boston Celtics,
04:31the Mavs have had the best offseason you could possibly ask for if you're a fan.
04:37And if you're a media member, because it makes it a lot more fun to cover the Mavs
04:43when they're good and they're active and doing all the things they've done.
04:46So big things ahead for the Mavs.
04:48I think they've positioned themselves not only to have a great regular season, but
04:52to potentially get back to the NBA Finals and
04:54avenge what was a gentleman's sweep against the Boston Celtics this past season.
04:59So stay tuned to dallasbasketball.com.
05:01Stay tuned to our Mavs Step Back podcast in the coming days and
05:05weeks as we continue to get you through this offseason.

05:15So we appreciate it, guys.
05:17Y'all have a good one.
