00:00How's it going, y'all?
00:03It's Dalton Trigg, Editor-in-Chief, Dallas Basketball, and
00:06lead host of Mav Step Back Podcast, coming to you to briefly recap
00:12what appears to be the final touches of the Dallas Mavericks offseason,
00:17which has arguably been the best offseason in team history.
00:21Obviously, they went out and signed future Hall of Famer Klay Thompson.
00:28We talked about that extensively both on dallasbasketball.com and
00:32our Mav Step Back Podcast, but he is going to add an intriguing element
00:37to this Mav's team, especially on the offensive end.
00:40Because, I mean, already, Luka and Kyrie, best backcourt in the NBA,
00:47almost unstoppable with just them.
00:49And now, you subtract Tim Hardaway Jr., essentially, and
00:54plug in Klay Thompson, who is 34 years old.
00:57But he's still got a lot of great basketball ahead of him,
01:00especially in a lesser role than what he had to be for
01:04the Golden State Warriors during those championship years.
01:06So that's gonna be a plus for the Mavs.
01:09They also got Quentin Grimes.
01:12He had some good run with the New York Knicks.
01:15And then he was previously with the Detroit Pistons, and
01:17he was in that trade for Tim Hardaway Jr.
01:20And then Najee Marshall was signed in free agency, too.
01:24And that's a sneaky pickup for the Mavs,
01:26because I know it's gonna hurt losing Derrick Jones Jr.
01:30But I think Najee Marshall fills that role really well.
01:34He's bigger than Derrick Jones Jr.
01:37He can shoot the ball better than Derrick Jones Jr.
01:41He might not be as equipped to guard the smaller dynamic guards like Jones was,
01:48but Najee Marshall is gonna fill in just fine for Derrick Jones Jr.
01:53So everyone's excited about that.
01:55Obviously, Klay Thompson is the biggest thing.
01:57And now, with the Mavs having one roster spot left,
02:02there was a lot of talk about, would it be Dennis Smith Jr.?
02:05Would it be Spencer Dinwiddie?
02:08We were told that the Mavs worked out Malachi Flynn at one point.
02:12There's a lot of different names that were popping up.
02:16And sure enough, it ended up being Spencer Dinwiddie.
02:19And we have all of that detailed for you at dallasbasketball.com.
02:24We had the breaking news piece when he agreed to sign with the Mavs on July 22nd.
02:30It's a one-year deal.
02:31We assume it's a veteran minimum deal for Spencer Dinwiddie.
02:35And look, he ended up beating out, or
02:39the Mavs ended up beating out the Lakers for Spencer Dinwiddie.
02:43So that's two for two now.
02:45The Mavs beat out the Lakers for Klay Thompson, and
02:47now they've beaten out the Lakers for Spencer Dinwiddie this summer, too.
02:52And we've got all of this,
02:53all the Spencer Dinwiddie coverage you can possibly want over at dallasbasketball.com.
02:59So be sure to go there and check us out.
03:01And check out all of our other stuff, too, that we've been.
03:04This is technically the dead point in the NBA offseason, but
03:07there's never a dead point at dallasbasketball.com.
03:11We keep the content churning out daily.
03:13So if it's anything that can even possibly be relative to the Mavs in some way,
03:19we have it up over there.
03:20But Spencer Dinwiddie, as far as a last roster spot guy,
03:26couldn't have picked a better fit.
03:27He's played the best basketball of his career with the Mavs.
03:30He only played 76 games with the Mavs over two half seasons.
03:35But one of those was, it ended with a Western Conference Finals run.
03:40And if the three-headed monster of Luka, Jalen Brunson, and
03:44Spencer Dinwiddie can get to the Western Conference Finals without a decent
03:49front court, you have to think the three-headed guard monster of Luka Doncic,
03:54Kyrie Irving, and Spencer Dinwiddie can do some damage now that the Mavs have
03:58a fully well-rounded roster, their front court is not what it was in 2022.
04:03You got Derek Lively, you got Daniel Gafford, you got PJ Washington.
04:08So all of that factors into this being a great bottom of the barrel signing,
04:15so to speak, for the Mavs.
04:16And Spencer Dinwiddie, he chose the Lakers after he was bought out last season.
04:21And I think he realizes that was a mistake.
04:23He knows the Mavs organization is where he needs to be.
04:28I think it was a great pickup for the Mavs.
04:30So coming off an NBA Finals loss to the Boston Celtics,
04:33the Mavs have had the best offseason you could possibly ask for
04:38if you're a fan and if you're a media member because it makes it a lot more fun
04:43to cover the Mavs when they're good and they're active and
04:46doing all the things they've done.
04:48So big things ahead for the Mavs.
04:50I think they've positioned themselves not only to have a great regular season but
04:54to potentially get back to the NBA Finals and
04:56avenge what was a gentleman's sweep against the Boston Celtics this past season.
05:01So stay tuned to dallasbasketball.com.
05:03Stay tuned to our Mavs Step Back podcast in the coming days and
05:07weeks as we continue to get you through this offseason.

05:17So we appreciate it, guys.
05:18Y'all have a good one.
