00:00As we shared yesterday on a Wednesday despite opening ceremonies for the
00:07Summer Olympiad in Paris being tomorrow afternoon on a Friday we did have some
00:13Olympic action underway we had some rugby on the pitch we also had some men's
00:17soccer get underway with all 16 nations that qualified for the soccer tournament
00:22on the field yesterday and in one of the first two matches of the day it was
00:28Argentina versus Morocco Morocco seemed destined to pull off an upset they led
00:342 to 1 going in to stoppage time in the 16th minute of stoppage time Argentina
00:40scored a wild goal the celebration started for the Argentines the Moroccan
00:45fans though upset with what could have been a questionable non offside they
00:50start throwing bottles onto the field they're mad the rest blow the game
00:54everybody thinks it is done but it wasn't really an hour and a half goes by
00:59and then for a reason that truly has not been explained at least as of yet the
01:04officials go back they deem the equalizer null offsides on Argentina so
01:10then after about a three hour delay the refs bring the two clubs back onto the
01:16pitch to finish the final three minutes of regulation Argentina does lose two
01:24to one Morocco pulls off an upset to start off the Olympic men's soccer
01:29tournament but as crazy and as controversial of an ending as you will
01:34see in any sport to start the Olympic Games how about this ready Ben like you
01:40know I throw my hat in the ring and a lot of things you know me making me and
01:43I don't want to be FIFA right now I don't want to be Commissioner of FIFA I
01:47just want to be Commissioner of the Olympic Soccer Exchange right now
01:50because you know what we're doing no offsides what it's all sides in the
01:52tournament at all no no offsides in the tournament at all how about that we don't
01:56have to have to go to VAR we're not doing VAR at all no offsides open this
02:00game up let's have some fun let's not have controversies let's not have got by
02:03the way is this like the only sport that does this Ben every time you get a goal
02:07scored you can't even celebrate if you have a ticket in your hand you have to
02:11wait 20 seconds here for VAR to happen can you imagine in the NFL touchdown
02:16yes Christian McCaffrey catches that ticket for me anytime touchdown and you
02:20let me wait let me wait let me oh commercial break yes finally I can
02:23celebrate this ridiculous man it can't be that hard at this point it should be
02:27called immediately stop play if you didn't it's over the goal counts here
02:32enough of this VAR nonsense well said I completely agree as replay has robotic
02:38officiating gone too far so later in the day it was the host nation in the gold
02:44medal favorites that being France taking on the United States national team at
02:50the u-23 level and France did what they were expected to do a hefty favorite in
02:55the match again the favorites to win the gold medal they hammered the Americans
03:003-0 what are we doing in soccer man yeah now let's let's get to the point here
03:06right you want to editorialize I can do it right now for you in the past we've
03:10seen and sometimes arguments for and against they don't deserve equal pay the
03:14men's team and the women's team the women would argue forget about the
03:17actual dollars that are coming in we're so far better than the men's team we
03:21should just be paid accordingly and some people might say that's ridiculous
03:24it's just about revenues I'm here to tell you right now the women were right
03:27all along at this point and I'm at the point right now where the men should
03:30give up every cent they have and just give it to the women's soccer team
03:35because for the past 40 years what have we been doing wasting money hundreds of
03:40millions of dollars probably spent since like 1990 till now on a product that is
03:44getting more horrendous on a year-to-year basis except the women's
03:48team always providing the excitement they have the medals they have the
03:53World Cup victories here give them all the money and shut down American soccer
03:57you know what MLS I'm looking at you too how do you want to see you on my TV
04:01screen anymore just women's soccer professionally and amateurs that's all
04:06we need in this country take the men out of the equation defund it defund the
04:11men's soccer team and give it all to the women here so I can actually enjoy a
04:15sport or we might be able to compete how about that I cannot lie the way that
04:21started I got very very nervous to be here on this program but I kind of I
04:27guess agree with the point Kyle Bond from Sporting News if you are here in
04:32the waiting room in the green room virtually I apologize I'll thank good
04:38but he will join us next the United States women's soccer team gets underway
04:43today they are the gold medal favorites at plus 175 in front of Spain by 25
04:51cents they take on let me see who the opener is against Zambia in the opener
04:57minus 3,000 that's for the Americans to win their opening match at the Olympic
05:03Games we had other things happening today men's rugby they're just flying
05:07through group play good runs Evans men's and women's archery in the ranking round
05:13as Donnie loved and again we've got women's handball and women's soccer
05:16underway today
05:21give it away give it away take a break next live right here on this Thursday on
05:27the early line for a second consecutive day Kyle Bond of Sporting News joins us
05:33here on TEL yesterday he was here to preview the opening day of Olympic
05:37action in the men's soccer tournament beautifully explained he's got his work
05:42cut out for him today to try to tell us and make sense of what happened in one
05:46of the opening matches between Argentina and Morocco yesterday over in Paris Kyle
05:53we appreciate the time thank you for being here for a second straight day on
05:56the early line of course yeah let's do it Wow what it's it's funny because they
06:03say in baseball every day you see something new and it feels like that's
06:08been the case in international soccer to the last couple of months I mean
06:13goodness gracious this summer has been crazy Kyle had a bird's-eye in front row
06:20view at all that we saw the craziness to end out the Copa America tournament as
06:24well and they did not miss a beat on the opening day of Olympic soccer action so
06:31Kyle let's get to the end of it Donnie and I have tried to explain just kind of
06:35following the notes of how the ending came to be yesterday between Argentina
06:40and Morocco can you please explain to us what happened at the end of stoppage time
06:46between the Moroccans and the Argentines yes so the first major weirdness of the
06:55game was 15 minutes of stoppage and for a stoppage believe we're having some
07:04technical difficulties at an unfortunate time as we were go ahead Donnie please
07:09I'm glad he brought that up because this isn't even like just a tangent for me he
07:14is correct about that I was following along on the internet Ben and when I saw
07:19I didn't know it was possible like could you just add 37 minutes of stoppage time
07:23like I've not usually it's one minute two minutes five minutes that stoppage
07:26time was outrageous here so it looks like we do have Kyle back I love where
07:30you're going with this please help me out how much stoppage time can we
07:33actually have your Kyle yeah yeah it's it's that was certainly like the first
07:41oddity of all of this that happened and you know Morocco was time-wasting there
07:45was a pitch invader but 15 minutes fell outlandish now looking at a lot of the
07:51other Olympic Games this appears to be some sort of directive because we've
07:54gotten a ton of stoppage time and basically every Olympic Games so far so
07:58I guess this is something they're going with but it was weird as heck and it
08:02felt like they were trying to get Argentina's many opportunities possible
08:06to equalize so of course in the 16th minute of stoppage time 15 minutes had
08:12gone by in the 16th minute Argentina equalized it was an insane equalizer
08:18first of all just truly yeah wild I mean it like hit the post the goalie made a
08:24save all this stuff and then it goes in Moroccan fans were upset about the
08:29stoppage time and so they started hurling projectiles and running onto the
08:34field so the game ends or so we thought and it's a draw 2-2 turns out that we
08:44got word about 15 minutes after the game that they know the game might not be
08:48over the official Olympic you know website listed the game as suspended due
08:57to this fan nonsense then it went final and there was some weird reporting from
09:04the Argentina reporters that hey we're trying to figure out whether it's safe
09:07for them to come out and play a couple more minutes because the game's not
09:11technically over there's still a minute or two left because of the time wasting
09:15during the stoppage time yada yada so then when the game goes final on the
09:22official Olympic website we all go alright that's it they've just decided
09:26to call it which seemed this most sensible thing to do because you've
09:29already played so much stoppage time you got the goal let's just end it then
09:35there's word that the goal might not stand and the game may not actually be
09:41over and that was the weirdest part so ultimately you know I'll get cut to the
09:46chase here they come out they bring the players back out for 10 minutes of warm
09:50up then they review the VAR footage then they cancel the goal then they play
09:54three more minutes and then the game actually ends what what seems to be the
09:58case is I guess the referee decided that the game was suspended not complete
10:03we all thought it was complete even the Olympic committee thought it was
10:07complete but the referee was like hey this game is suspended not finished so
10:13that's what they're going with and it felt real weird I mean wildness all the
10:18way across the board I mean no doubt about it at that point so we'll see like
10:21making up the rules as they go sometimes doesn't always work out in your favor
10:25we'll see as we advance and move on yeah yeah I just want to jump in here
10:31too because this is an interesting perspective from from a betting point of
10:35view I don't have much information to add but I do think that we should review
10:40this because the game technically went final from like a like a information
10:49aggregation point of view so the data providers that a lot of these betting
10:53sites use got a final result so I'm pretty sure a lot of books paid out bets
11:03as far as money line over under that kind of a thing and that got reversed so
11:12it's super weird and I'd be interested to hear from anybody who's listening
11:17that may have had bets paid out and then retracted or vice versa because
11:22from a from a data provider point of view the game went final and so it's a
11:29it's an odd one from a betting perspective it really is and by the way
11:34Kyle real quick on this like I've had those instances there was being one of
11:38those data providers and I've been to games where they go into double and
11:41triple overtime where the manual doesn't go through and I've accidentally shut
11:44down the app which tells the application that the game is over so I've been
11:49through it on a couple different occasions at that point so it is a wild
11:53scenario that the bells do go off behind the scenes but it's one thing certainly
11:57that we haven't seen before France USA something that we always see now Kyle
12:01team USA not performing up to the capabilities I know they weren't
12:05supposed to win yesterday what did you take out that three to nothing game and
12:08is there a chance that team USA can still move on throughout these not
12:11before we get to the knockout stage yeah I said you know yesterday that I
12:19didn't think possible for the US to really perform maybe where the fans want
12:25them to at this tournament the roster isn't quite there the coaching isn't
12:29quite there it just doesn't feel like it's gonna click and then you watch the
12:32first half of this game the first 60 minutes really and you go okay maybe
12:40they could do something here and then it all fell apart so I don't think three
12:45nil is a fair reflection of how they played but I think ultimately it might
12:52be a fair reflection of that the fact that they might be a little overmatched
12:56in this tournament because it would just took a couple of individual errors to
13:01really bring it to a screeching halt they played really well there was a
13:06header off the crossbar that they had at one nil that could have tied it which
13:10would have made it a very different game so they played really well but it's just
13:15a couple of goalkeeping errors and a couple of defensive mistakes and and a
13:20failure to finish chances and now you're staring at three nil to the hosts more
13:25Olympic soccer getting underway today the women's soccer tournament beginning
13:29on this Thursday morning only a 12 nation tournament Kyle is the format
13:35similar to what we see on the men's side or if not how does it differ yes so
13:41the format itself is is similar but it is a full professional competition so
13:46you know it's not a youth tournament all all full professional players are
13:50allowed to play because in the women's side of things the Olympics are still a
13:54major tournament to them and and so I think the US can play well I think the
13:59problem is the rest of the world has like officially caught up quote-unquote
14:03I think we as fans need to understand that no longer is the US going to
14:08dominate international tournaments with maybe one or two competitors the rest of
14:13the world has caught up to the point where I think Spain is the more talented
14:19team full stop like the US could play its best and still lose to Spain in the
14:24final so I think the US will play well I think they have a shot at a medal if not
14:28gold but I think Spain is the best team in the field a 25-cent distinction only
14:35between Team USA and Spain plenty more to come on the early line up next year
