01:45Nice work, Jack.
01:47Not bad.
01:49I guess I'd better be leaving.
01:52I'm on park duty this afternoon.
01:54I've still got to change into my uniform.
01:57I'll see you later.
01:58Okay.
02:00What do you think of today's bulletin? Are you ready?
02:03There's some news in it that should be of a special interest to you.
02:06I haven't had time yet, but I will before I go on duty.
02:09This is one report you should read before you go to work.
02:12Sounds kind of important.
02:14Not exactly important, but it is interesting.
02:17It should be particularly to you.
02:19It means you'll probably be bounding the pavements again.
02:23Say, that is interesting.
02:25Give me that.
02:26Here, I'll read it to you.
02:27Go ahead, you're late now.
02:29Get dressed.
02:30To all mounted officers in the Traffic Division,
02:33at a meeting held today in the City Council at the suggestion of Commissioner of Police,
02:38the Honorable Mr. Hanson,
02:39amendments were offered and passed to the effect that all officers in the Traffic Division,
02:44now using horses in their line of duty,
02:46shall report to their superior officers at the close of this day
02:50and receive further instructions as to their assignments.
02:53It being moved and seconded that all horses now being used in the Traffic Department
02:58be retired from service and sold at public auction to the highest bidders.
03:03Shall we play hearts and flowers for you?
03:06What do a bunch of councilmen or commissioners
03:09know about the need of horses in the Traffic Division?
03:12Well, I'll bet my bottom dollar they've never been near a horse
03:15or really investigated the work the horses do,
03:18particularly in the Park Division.
03:20It's rotten, I tell you.
03:22What's rotten, Jack?
03:25Oh, I'm sorry, Commissioner,
03:27but that's the way I feel about it.
03:29About what?
03:31About the discontinuance of horses in the Police Department.
03:34Well, I fail to see where you can find anything rotten about that.
03:38It's the right thing to do and now is the time to do it.
03:41The horses have meant a great deal to the Department, Mr. Hanson,
03:44and they've proven their worth a dozen different ways,
03:47and now you're throwing them out.
03:49My boy, I'm surprised at you taking that attitude.
03:51Most of the horses are growing old,
03:53and it would be foolhardy to replace them.
03:56Besides, traffic conditions are getting heavier every day.
03:59We must meet new problems in new ways.
04:02But Starlight isn't old.
04:04He's doing his job and doing it well.
04:06Well, the ruling's been passed,
04:08and you'll have to make the best of it.
04:10I'll probably be assigning you to the motorcycle squad.
04:12Not me.
04:14As far as I'm concerned, if they take Starlight away from me,
04:17they can give me a pair of roller skates.
04:19Well, I'd be just as helpless with them as I would be without Starlight.
04:23Forget it, my boy.
04:25You're taking matters too seriously.
04:27In a couple of months, you'll forget that you ever rode a horse by the name of Starlight.
04:30That's where you're wrong, Mr. Hanson.
04:32And don't be surprised if you find my resignation in tonight.
04:35Oh, don't be foolish, Jack.
04:37You couldn't quit the force.
04:39Yes, I could.
04:41Well, don't be hasty.
05:09Oof.
05:23Oh, that was a close call for me.
05:26I can't thank you enough for what you've done.
05:29Don't thank me.
05:31Thank Starlight.
05:33His speed really saved your life.
05:35You know, if that horse of yours ever hit that traffic lane,
05:38it might have been just too bad for you.
05:41Just too bad is right.
05:43And it'll be worse if I don't get myself out of the arms of the law.
05:49Oh, I'm sorry.
05:57He certainly is a beautiful animal.
05:59What did you say his name is?
06:01Oh, what did you say your name is?
06:03Oh, I'm Ellen Hanson.
06:06Hanson?
06:07Any relation to the police commissioner?
06:10Only his daughter.
06:14Starlight, thank the lady for the privilege.
06:23Say, you're certainly fortunate to own such an animal.
06:26I wish he were mine, but he belongs to the city.
06:29I'm losing him tonight.
06:30Well, what do you mean?
06:32Well, orders have been issued retiring all horses from service.
06:36Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
06:39Well, they have.
06:41And Starlight has just performed his last official act.
06:44I'm sorry.
07:03Well, where'd you get the cigar?
07:04I wanted a raffle.
07:05Only cost me two bucks.
07:06Oh, you're no fool.
07:07You bet.
07:09What do you think of that?
07:11Boy, they got me.
07:12Imagine, after all the personal attention I've given them beasts, now they're going to fire them.
07:15That means I'm out of a job.
07:17Well, you've got nothing on the horses, Jaime.
07:18They're all going to be out of jobs, too.
07:20Yeah, but have what's right.
07:22They've only been used to working with us coppers.
07:24Did you say us coppers?
07:26Well, you know what I mean, pal.
07:28I'd have been one myself, only I've been too busy working the horses.
07:30I didn't get a chance to take my third degree.
07:32Well, you'll have plenty of time now.
07:34Sure, and you're going to help me, ain't you?
07:36I will, Jaime, but not for some time.
07:38You ain't quitting, are you?
07:40Well, you can call it that.
07:42Just resigning.
07:43You mean they fired you?
07:45No, they fired Starlight.
07:47Things wouldn't be the same around here without him.
07:49You ain't getting sentimental over a horse, are you?
07:52I must be, Jaime.
07:53Yeah, but we've got to be progressive.
07:54That's what the chief said.
07:55Horses is a thing of the past.
07:57He said that, too.
07:58You know, time marches on.
08:00Yeah, that it does, and I'm marching, too.
08:02But I'm sticking with horses.
08:04Starlight has proven a good friend,
08:06and I'm going to the commissioner and try to buy him.
08:08Yeah, well, I heard that they were going to sell them all.
08:10Say, somebody made a crack about making glue out of them bangtails.
08:13They was just kidding, wasn't they?
08:15Well, not entirely.
08:17Yeah, but they can't do that to me.
08:18I've been practically a mother to them nags.
08:20You better forget your motherly instinct and get yourself another job.
08:23However, if you don't find a spot,
08:25you know where my place is on the desert.
08:27You bet, boss, and I'll be seeing you sooner than you expect.
08:29Anytime.
08:31I want you to know that I appreciate your efforts this afternoon
08:34in saving my daughter Ellen from what might have been a very serious accident.
08:39Well, there wasn't much to it,
08:41but it did confirm what we were talking about this afternoon,
08:44about the value of horses in the traffic department.
08:47You may be right in this case,
08:49but accidents like that don't happen every day.
08:52Well, this one certainly struck close to home.
08:54Can you imagine my embarrassment
08:56riding a motorcycle trying to catch a runaway horse?
09:00And speaking of horses, that's the main reason I'm here.
09:04I want to buy Starlight,
09:06now that the traffic department has no more use for him.
09:09I'm sorry, Jack, but I can't sell him to you.
09:13Well, I'll pay you your price.
09:15I'll give you more than anyone else will offer.
09:17I know that, and I hate to let you down like this.
09:20If it were in my power, I'd give you the horse.
09:23But you'll be able to buy him later at the public sale.
09:28It's quite a disappointment not being able to buy Starlight now.
09:32Well, according to law, Jack, we must auction all the horses.
09:35I'm sorry I can't sell him to you now,
09:38but you won't have any trouble buying him at the auction.
09:41I hope not.
09:53Ladies and gentlemen, bids are now in order.
09:56We offer first...
09:57Hey, mister, couldn't you hold this off till my pal gets here?
10:00I'm sorry, my friend, but we must start promptly.
10:03This is an auction, and I'm not permitted to wait for anyone.
10:06It's the law.
10:07The law? No laws.
10:08There's going to be some laws buffeted if my pal doesn't get Starlight.
10:12They can't do that to me.
10:13I bet you a sweet life.
10:15They can't do that to me.
10:16If you, my illustrious friend and colleague,
10:19would kindly condescend to cease your mumbling
10:21and bring forth the brown equine quadruped,
10:24we will proceed with this auction.
10:26Wise guy, huh?
10:28The horse, my friend.
10:29Well, why didn't you say so in the first place?
10:32Which one do you want, pal?
10:34My name, sir, is Hugo Boniface Mortimer Kahn.
10:39And now you may bring me the chestnut sturgeon.
10:42My error.
10:44I mean stallion.
10:46Ladies and gentlemen, my mind was wandering
10:49back into the long, long ago
10:52when we made excursions into the ocean vastness
10:55in search of the elusive
10:58pescatorial denizens of the deep.
11:01Now, this fine, gentle horse,
11:04the prize of the fire police department,
11:08how much am I bid for it?
11:10A beautiful animal.
11:12Hey, mister, you're playing with fire.
11:15There you are. I told you so.
11:45Well, ladies and gentlemen,
12:02how much am I bid for this mare here?
12:05How much am I bid?
12:06$10.
12:07$10 a gentleman bids over here, $10.
12:09Do I hear any more?
12:10$25, $25.
12:12Do I hear $30?
12:14What business are you in, brother?
12:15Oh, I'm the agent for the Exnay Glue Company.
12:19Oh, glue company, huh?
12:20I bid $50.
12:21$50, $50.
12:23Do I hear any more bids?
12:24No horse is worth $50 to us.
12:26That's all right with me.
12:27Sold to this gentleman for $50.
12:40$51.
12:42Glue factory.
12:46Glue factory.
12:48If you get fresh with me,
12:49I'll put that glue factory on the bum.
13:13Got a roughing on it, weren't you?
13:26Well, I guess I was,
13:27but I was in a hurry to get to an auction to buy a horse.
13:30Buy a horse?
13:31Yeah.
13:32I've heard a lot of excuses, but never that one before.
13:35Where's your driver's license?
13:43I guess I haven't got it.
13:45You haven't got it.
13:46You haven't a license for your trailer,
13:48you haven't your operator's license,
13:49and you're giving me a song and dance about buying a horse.
13:52I better take you in.
13:53Oh, wait a minute.
13:55Say, I was on the force for years.
13:57Park Division.
13:58Rank is a name.
14:00I was pistol champion last year.
14:02Here, maybe this will help.
14:05Well, why didn't you say so in the first place?
14:07Where'd you say you were going?
14:08Police auction at headquarters.
14:10Well, let's go.
14:26I bid $110 for this fine horse.
14:29The pride of the traffic department.
14:31$110.
14:32Do I hear any more bids?
14:33Going at $110.
14:34Going.
14:35Going.
14:36And ten cents.
14:37$110.
14:40Do I hear any more bids?
14:42Look at that horse, ladies and gentlemen.
14:44Do I hear $120 for this fine horse?
14:46$120.
14:48$120.
14:49Going at $120.
14:51Sold to the young lady for $120.
14:55Lady, you wouldn't like that horse.
14:56He bites.
15:07Jack!
15:27Jack got us down, pal.
15:28If he'd have been here, we'd have sure had Starlight.
15:33What happened?
15:34Is it all over?
15:35I say it's all over.
15:36We lost Starlight.
15:37And to a dame, too.
15:38That's what bores me.
15:39Dames don't know nothing about horses.
15:41What gets you, anyway?
15:42Oh, I had a little trouble getting here.
15:44Where is he now?
15:54I failed you, old boy, when you needed me most.
15:57I hope your new owner thinks as much of you as I do.
16:01Well, why shouldn't she?
16:02He saved her life, didn't he?
16:04So you're the one who bought him.
16:05Uh-huh.
16:06Don't you think I had reason enough?
16:08I think he's grand.
16:10So do I.
16:11I figured on buying him myself.
16:13But I was delayed in getting here.
16:15Oh, now I'm beginning to understand why that gentleman was so anxious.
16:20I thought he'd bite my head off.
16:25Pimey!
16:27Don't pay any attention to him.
16:29He's harmless.
16:31You know, by letting Starlight get out of my possession,
16:35I feel as though I let my best friend down.
16:38I can appreciate how you feel.
16:40You did me a favor once.
16:42I could do one for you now.
16:45You mean you'd sell him to me?
16:47No, not sell him, but give him to you.
16:51Oh, I couldn't take him.
16:53But I would like to buy him from you.
16:55Well, if that's the way you feel about it, it's a deal.
16:59Gee, that's swell.
17:04Say, he's a beauty.
17:06Look here, you have the horse.
17:08Don't steal my dog.
17:24Take him.
17:25Call an ambulance.
17:30They got Bush.
17:31Let's get out of here.
17:43Hello, Mr. Jack.
17:46I'm sorry I didn't get over sooner,
17:50but thank you for getting me this job.
17:54That's all right, Snowflake.
17:56I know you'd be saying that, Mr. Jack.
18:01My job is finished now.
18:04Nothing like that.
18:05You can have your job as long as you want,
18:08if you do the right thing.
18:10I hope they don't make no complaints
18:14about the way I handled this.
18:18I did my best.
18:20Sure you did.
18:21And you're going to get a big reward.
18:24I don't think I'm getting no reward.
18:28Oh, yes, you will.
18:31I met Jaime yesterday.
18:36He said that you was quitting the force,
18:40going back to the desert,
18:44taking Starlight with you.
18:47I kind of figured on trailing along.
18:51That is, if you would let me.
18:54You bet I will.
18:56Now just take it easy.
19:00You is my best friend, Mr. Jack.
19:06I sure feel bad
19:11that I have to leave you.
19:16I have to leave you.
19:24Oh, Rankin.
19:30I'm sorry about Snowflake.
19:32He was a nice boy.
19:33We're going to miss him.
19:35Yes, I've known the boy for a long time.
19:38I felt kind of responsible for him.
19:40I shouldn't have ever got him that job in the bank.
19:43Well, the boy did his duty,
19:45and he did it to his people.
19:47Others were better prepared to protect the bank than Snowflake.
19:50He was only the porter.
19:51I know.
19:52But the boy showed courage,
19:54and he did what he thought was the only thing for him to do
19:57when he saw the property of his employers endangered.
20:01It's going to be difficult for me to tell his folks.
20:03You'll find a way.
20:05And incidentally,
20:07find your way up to my office in the morning.
20:09I want to have a talk with you.
20:11Yes, sir.
20:16Hey, where are we going now?
20:18Say, the most important thing to do now
20:21is to find a spot to lay low in.
20:23I'm taking you there now.
20:24It's a spot out in the edge of the desert.
20:25It belongs to my brother.
20:26He won't be there this time of the year,
20:28and nobody will ever know we're there.
20:29Yeah, you're getting smart, kid.
20:31It's about time you found out, Rod.
20:38That was nice work, Rankin.
20:40We'd like to have you stay on the force.
20:43There's a nice promotion up for you if you'll come back.
20:46Thanks, Mr. Hanson, but I've made up my mind.
20:50I have a nice place I've homesteaded down in the desert,
20:53and I'm leaving right away with Starlight.
20:55It'll be necessary for you to sign a deposition
20:57on the capture of Butch.
20:59Where can I reach you by phone?
21:01Well, I'm sorry.
21:02Where I'm going, you can't.
21:04Well, in that event, leave your address here,
21:07and we'll see if the papers get to you.
21:09I'll deliver those papers in person.
21:12Is that a promise?
21:13It is.
21:14I'd like to see how Starlight looks on the desert.
21:18Did you say Starlight?
21:39Hello, Sheriff Brooks.
21:41Hello, Jack.
21:42What are you doing here this time of year?
21:44I'm up to stay this time.
21:46Why, you mean you're quitting the force?
21:48That's just it.
21:50Say, Jack, this is no time to be quitting.
21:53I figured you was a fixture up there.
21:55That was it.
21:56I was becoming just that.
21:59But I bought Starlight,
22:00and I'm going up to the shack and park out a while.
22:03Oh, I'll be seeing you around.
22:05Not too soon.
22:07I'm stocking up on a couple of months' supplies.
22:10Well, I'll see you later.
22:11Okay.
22:35Well, spot you picked for us, kid.
22:37Makes a good hideout.
22:39But that's all that's good for.
22:41Yeah, I often wonder what my brother saw
22:43in staking himself out to a joint like this.
22:45Know what I like about the place?
22:46It's off the main road.
22:48There's not a chance of anyone ever finding us here.
22:51Listen, if we had to get out of here in a hurry,
22:55we'd cut across the desert, up the valley, and over the dam.
22:58Once we get to the dam, the country's ours.
23:00These backwoodsmen don't know the war's over.
23:06Hey, Rod.
23:08You're apt to find wearing that bulletproof vest
23:10under your shirt for underwear
23:11kind of warm out here in the desert.
23:13Oh, yeah.
23:15I might find it warmer if I took it off.
23:17Yeah, or colder.
23:20Very quaint sense of humor.
23:22Not half as quaint a sense of humor as the government.
23:25Imagine them sending me an income tax report to make out.
23:29That's what you get for leaving your address around.
23:31You should have changed it.
23:32Well, I lived there for 10 years.
23:34He couldn't change it.
23:36Not without knocking the walls down.
23:41Well, address or no address,
23:43they ain't getting any of my dough.
23:44Don't worry about that.
23:45They'll get it or get you.
23:47Well, I'd give my share of the dough
23:49to get Butch out of the spot that he's in.
23:51Butch was a right guy,
23:52but always too slow on the getaway.
23:55He'd have made it easy
23:56if some wise guy hadn't taken a chance.
23:58That porter had a lot of nerve taking after us.
24:01Yeah, he had a lot of nerve.
24:03And the way I saw Butch blaze away at him,
24:05he won't be using it anymore.
24:07Butch is a cinch to burn.
24:09Got a record a mile long.
24:11Bumping off that porter ain't gonna help him any.
24:14Oh, let's quit talking about him.
24:16Let's think about us.
24:17How about splitting up the dough?
24:18Keep your shirt on, kid.
24:20You'll get yours.
24:22We've been giving you the breaks, haven't we?
24:24Sure.
24:25But if it hadn't have been for us,
24:27you'd still be out at that reform school.
24:29Yeah, it was nice of you fellas to help me break away.
24:32But I've been helping you plenty, too.
24:34We're partners, ain't we?
24:36So forget it.
24:37And start doing some figuring on how we can spring Butch.
24:41Say, I think I got a slant for you.
24:44I could get my brother.
24:46Maybe he'd help if I told him Butch was a friend of mine.
24:49Your brother?
24:51I didn't know you had one.
24:57Oh, yeah, sure I do.
25:00I remember now you saying something about this being his place.
25:04What does he do?
25:05Who does he know?
25:06Oh, he's a...
25:08Oh, he knows a lot of politicians around town.
25:12Might help us to get the right lawyers.
25:14Spring Butch.
25:15You're getting smarter by the hour, kid.
25:18You ought to be starting back to the city and make some contacts for us.
25:21Wait a minute.
25:22On second thought, I can't do that.
25:24My brother wouldn't help me.
25:26Anyhow, he wouldn't be a party to the things we're thinking of.
25:29Say, anybody would be a party to anything
25:32if there's enough dough in it.
25:34That might go for a lot of people, but you don't know my brother.
25:38I don't want to know him unless he can do me some good.
25:41Get your coat on and head for town.
25:43See what you can do.
25:44We'll give you all that dough you need.
25:46The town's too hot.
25:47I can't go now.
25:49The kid's right.
25:51Let's lay low till things cool off a little.
26:02Woo!
26:03It's hitchhiking, but it used to be.
26:32It used to be.
27:03Gee whiz.
27:05It's my brother.
27:06I thought you said he'd never come up here this time of year.
27:09Never has before.
27:10Well, if he knows anything, this will be the shortest vacation he ever spent.
27:14Say, what does your brother do?
27:16Oh, uh, he's in the horse business.
27:18Great lover of horses.
27:20All my family's been that way.
27:21All but me.
27:23Well, if he acts regular, we'll let him alone.
27:25You better go outside and meet him first.
27:28Tell him we're friends of yours.
27:30Okay, I'll meet him outside.
27:32If he spots anyone here or sees a car, he's apt to get suspicious.
27:35Go ahead.
27:36And don't forget, we're watching you.
27:39Not apt to forget.
27:43Hey, put on your coats and cover up those play things.
27:45Oh, yeah.
27:59Oh, hello, Dave.
28:01What are you doing out here?
28:02I thought you were...
28:03Get off your grips and keep walking with me.
28:04I gotta talk fast.
28:05What do you mean?
28:06I'm in trouble.
28:07They're watching inside.
28:09Listen, I broke out of reform school and got mixed up with the wrong crowd.
28:12Threw up a car in a stick-up.
28:13We're using your place for a hideout.
28:15Told them you're my brother, but they don't know you're a copper.
28:17Watch yourself for a couple days and don't slip away and they won't be suspicious.
28:20Well, how have you been anyway, kid?
28:22Oh, swell, Jack.
28:28Fellas, this is my brother, Jack.
28:30Glad to know you.
28:31How are you?
28:32Well, it's quite a surprise to find company here.
28:35As long as you're friends of my brother here, why, just make yourself at home.
28:39Thanks.
28:53Hey!
29:01You have to lift up the whole rear end to get on?
29:04Come on if you want to live.
29:06I'm fixing up for my buddies.
29:08Your what?
29:10My horses.
29:11They're personal friends of mine.
29:20My horses!
29:40And this, my good children, is the promised land.
29:42Oh, I know it's a little dry, but Jaime will fix it up.
29:57Your brother was telling me you're in the horse business.
30:00Horse business?
30:03Oh, yeah.
30:05Horse business.
30:07You know, I used to be pretty close to that racket myself.
30:09I followed him for years.
30:11Well, I never went in for racing.
30:14Just sort of been around him, you know.
30:17You know what I'd like to do?
30:19I'd like to own a nice string of horses and spend all my time at the track.
30:23Well, there's better spots you could be spending your time.
30:27Mean and what?
30:28Oh, my brother means like reading good books or traveling.
30:32Or living in a joint like this.
30:35Well, this may be a joint to you fellas, but it's home to me.
30:38I like this.
30:40I wish I could spend all my time here.
30:43Say, being as we're friends of your brother, and you look like a right guy to me,
30:49I might let you in on a nice little piece of business that would make that possible.
30:54Dave was telling me you know a lot of big shots.
30:57Oh, I know several, and they might be just the right people.
31:01What's on your mind?
31:26That's Jaime. He's a friend of mine.
31:28I take we're crowding you here.
31:30We'll take a walk for a while. Maybe you got something private to tell him.
31:33Oh, no, nothing like that.
31:35I didn't expect to find company here, so I told Jaime to drop in anytime he wanted to.
31:40And he sure brought along plenty of company.
31:43Well, you see, horses are Jaime's weakness.
31:53Jaime!
31:55Surprised you, didn't I?
31:56I'll say you did.
31:59What brought you down here?
32:01You said I was always welcome.
32:03Well, how'd you get here?
32:04How'd I get here? You ask me how I got here.
32:07I brought the horses, so naturally I walked.
32:09And my feet are killing me.
32:11With a string of horses?
32:13Well, why didn't you ride one?
32:16Never occurred to me. Can you imagine that?
32:22I'm a promotion just ahead of you.
32:24You see, in a captain on the force, you prefer to live in a spot like this.
32:28Why the way you nabbed that guy, Butch, you could have wrote your own ticket.
32:34Are you going nuts?
32:36Just when you're going to have power in your hand.
32:38When they send that deposition to you, it's up to you whether or not Butch boings.
32:42And that's real power. Just like a judge.
32:44You got a human life in your hands.
32:46You know, I was thinking,
32:48they'll be sending that deposition up here any day now.
32:52Stay where you are.
32:53Thanks. My feet are killing me.
32:56Bandit.
32:57So, your brother's a dealer in horses, huh?
33:01Maybe you don't know it, but Butch is our pal.
33:04We're the guys that stuck up the bank.
33:06And that this little brother of yours, that dirty double-crossing rat...
33:12Tear down.
33:17This is an outrage.
33:19Tear down.
33:21Come on, lay off, Dave.
33:23I didn't know what your record was until you just told me.
33:25Well, you know what it is now.
33:27You're going to be a lot of help to me.
33:29When them papers arrive,
33:31you're going to write just what I say.
33:34And then if Butch goes free,
33:36you go free.
33:38Maybe.
33:41I don't like the way he said that.
33:44Could we have a few minutes alone?
33:46Shut up!
33:47Who, me?
33:48Yes, you, Jaime.
33:49The less said, the better.
33:51I've got my rights.
33:52Free speech, that's me.
33:54I'm going to write to the governor about this.
33:56If you don't pipe down, you'll lose your speech.
33:59I resent that.
34:00Well, resent this.
34:03Hey!
34:16Stick him up!
34:25Boy, that was somewhat quick.
34:32Come on.
34:52It's just above the heart.
34:54You've got to let me get a doctor.
34:56A doctor?
34:58Don't make me laugh.
35:00I could make it easy on you and finish him off now.
35:11Jaime, get me some water, quick.
35:13Sit down, stupid.
35:16I resent that insult.
35:18So you're resenting again.
35:20You might as well make up your mind you're staying here for a while.
35:23So take it easy and don't try anything funny.
35:26You've got to get away, Jay.
35:28They'll kill you, sure.
35:30Just as soon as they make you write what they want on a deposition for Butch.
35:34I'm going to get out of here and darn quick.
35:36I'm writing for a doctor.
35:40Don't do it, Jay.
35:42Don't do it. It's no use.
35:44If you make a break, stay away.
35:48Starlight.
35:50Starlight's tied off around the side of the house.
35:54I got you into this.
35:57I thought I might help you get out of it.
36:00You'll be all right.
36:07If you let me get a doctor, I'll do anything you say.
36:09I'll give you my word.
36:10Your word.
36:12What good's that to me?
36:13Well, there's a first aid kit out in my car.
36:15Will you let me get it?
36:17Well, the kid's in bad shape.
36:19If I don't clean out that wound, he won't last long.
36:22Why do I care how long he lasts?
36:24It'll do him good to go out the hard way.
36:27He won't be causing you any more trouble.
36:29So calm yourself, because I ain't letting you out.
36:33Do you think I'm that crazy that I'd let you get outside and make a break for help
36:38and have the whole country side up here after us?
36:40Nothing doing.
36:41Oh, let him get it.
36:43I saw it when I was searching the car.
36:45Nothing else there.
36:47All right, get it.
36:48But remember, I'm keeping you covered every inch of the way.
36:54All right.
37:24See ya.
38:24It's up to you, Starlight.
38:25Get to town.
38:43Trying to pull a fast one, huh?
38:45No, I just wanted to get a doctor.
38:47The stuff I had in the car couldn't help him any.
38:49Yeah, you're becoming a nuisance.
38:52If I didn't think you was going to help me get Butch out, I'd have finished you.
38:56But I think I can persuade you to say the right thing in those depositions.
39:00Maybe.
39:09You can't do this to me.
39:11No?
39:12Yeah, what do you think I am, a lion in a gilded cage?
39:15Oh, shut up.
39:16All right, I'll sit down.
39:18But it's against my will.
39:22How is he?
39:23You won't need no doctor.
39:32Say, what happened to that horse?
39:33Oh, he ran away after I caught Rankin.
39:35Ran away?
39:36Yeah, what's wrong with that?
39:38Say, don't you know what that means in this country?
39:40A riderless horse running into town?
39:42No.
39:43Why, that's the law of the desert.
39:44There'll be a posse up here after us in no time.
39:47Say, we'd better be getting out of here.
39:49I'll say we'd better be getting out of here.
39:51Yeah, but not until I take care of a couple of ex-coppers.
39:56Appreciate this.
40:20His burden is going to be a pleasure compared to what's going to happen to you.
40:23You don't think you're going to get away with this, do you?
40:25think you're going to get away with this do you what's going to stop me I'll tell
40:29you what's going to stop you the law fails there's
40:32a justice they cause well there's your finish and don't be too sure I read
40:37a book on escapes once.
