00:00Hi kids! Today we are going to learn about wind energy. So let's start.
00:10Kinetic energy of moving air can be trapped to produce mechanical energy that in turn produces electrical energy.
00:21Do you know wind is actually a form of solar energy?
00:28Let's see how.
00:31It is because wind itself is a result of uneven heating of the Earth's atmosphere by the sun.
00:43Wind energy or flow of wind can be used in many ways.
00:50Sailing, flying kites, big balloons, parachutes all use this wind energy.
00:59Many air sports, water sports all use this wind energy.
01:05And specially created windmills can be used to pump water and grind grains.
01:15Big wind turbines are created to produce electricity using this wind energy.
01:25Kinetic energy of moving air or the wind turns the blade around the router.
01:32And this router is attached to the main shaft to the generator that generates electricity.
01:41So by using this windmill, wind energy empowers the generator that generates electricity.
01:49Wind turbines are mainly of two types.
01:53They can be horizontal axes and vertical axes.
01:58Horizontal axes, wind turbines are more common.
02:05In case of horizontal axes, wind turbines, the rotating axes of the turbine is parallel to the ground.
02:14And they are mainly used in commercial big purpose projects producing electricity at a large scale.
02:23This type of wind turbine are generally very high and their installation cost too is very high.
02:33They are installed at places where the wind conditions are very consistent.
02:39Vertical axes, wind turbines.
02:43In case of vertical axes, the rotating axes of the turbine is vertical to the ground or perpendicular to the ground.
02:52They are primarily used in small wind projects and residential applications.
02:59They are able to work in places where wind conditions are not very consistent.
03:06And they can rotate in even lower wind conditions.
03:11They are not very high.
03:13They are closer to the ground.
03:15They are quieter and more bird friendly.
03:19That is, lesser number of birds are harmed in case of vertical axes, wind turbines and these resembles an egg beater.
03:30Wind farms.
03:33Wind farms consist of many individual wind turbines which are connected to the electrical power transmission network.
03:44Wind farm provides electricity enough for a small city.
03:50Denmark generates 40% of its electricity from wind.
03:56More than 80 countries in the world are generating power using the wind farm.
04:03Almost all cities can generate its own electricity by such wind farms.
04:09And escape the use of fossil fuels and other non-renewable sources of energy and prevent our earth from getting polluted.
04:19And also save our valuable non-renewable sources of energy.
04:25Let's learn advantages of wind energy.
04:31It is an excellent alternative to fossil fuels.
04:35Available in plenty.
04:37Obviously renewable.
04:39Widely distributed.
04:41Clean source of energy.
04:44Produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation.
04:49Uses very little land in contrast to solar power plants.
04:54Wind is an inexpensive source of electricity.
04:58It is cheaper than coal or gas plants.
05:03Now let's learn some disadvantages of wind energy.
05:09Wind power is not very consistent throughout the year.
05:15So wind energy can be used in conjunction with some other electric power source.
05:22So that it can supply energy when wind energy is not sufficiently available.
05:29Generating wind power requires very high initial investment.
05:35Which is even more than fossil fuel generators.
05:40But if we compare the wind power operated power plants with fossil fuel power plants on a life cycle basis.
05:51Then the wind power operated power plants are much more competitive.
05:57And are less costlier.
06:01A large number of birds get killed due to wind power plants.
06:11Another disadvantage is that almost all good wind sites.
06:16Are often located at very far locations from the cities.
06:21And the electricity generated by wind power plants.
06:25Is required to be transported to very far cities.
06:30So kids today we learned a lot about wind energy.
06:36Now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more.
06:40Bye-bye.
