00:00During the King's speech it was confirmed the new Labour government would
00:03progress with the Hillsborough law, named in honour of the 97 fans who died at the
00:081989 disaster and their families and friends who have campaigned. The changes
00:12to law would include a new legally enforceable duty of candour for public
00:16servants, forcing them to tell the truth during public inquiries and
00:20investigations. It would also ensure that victims of disasters or state related
00:24deaths are entitled to a parity of legal representation during inquests and
00:29inquiries as well as a public advocate to represent families. The leader of
00:34Liverpool City Council and City Region Metro Mayor said its inclusion was a
00:38significant moment in the fight for justice. Prime Minister Keir Starmer
00:42first committed to introducing a Hillsborough law back in 2022. The law
00:46could be introduced to Parliament within the first 12 months of the new Labour
00:50government. That's according to Home Office Minister Dame Diana Johnson. Dame
00:54Diana said cross-party support existed to get the legislation through.
