PBBM, decides to ban POGOs in PH, tackles important issues in PH during SONA

00:00Anticipation and expectations abound every state-of-the-nation address or sauna
00:05as every guest in the actual venue and those outside, the ordinary Filipinos,
00:10want to hear what they have always been hoping for actually realized.
00:15Judging from the applause the President received,
00:18it's clear that many of those in attendance were satisfied with how he has performed thus far.
00:24But many became even more ecstatic for a development regarding a venture
00:29that has been mired by controversy and allegations of criminal activities.

00:38Starting today, the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators or POGOS are banned in the Philippines.
00:44This was emphasized by President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. in his state-of-the-nation address or sauna.
00:50The President directed the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation or PAGCOR
00:55to wind down and cease the operations of POGOS by the end of the year.
00:59Meanwhile, he instructed the Department of Labor and Employment or DOLE
01:03to collaborate with economic managers to provide employment opportunities
01:07for Filipino POGO workers who will be affected by the closure.
01:10And now, we can hear the loud cry of the people against POGOS.
01:18Disguising as legitimate entities, their operations have ventured into illicit areas
01:24furthest from gaming, such as financial scamming, money laundering, prostitution,
01:29human trafficking, kidnapping, brutal torture, even murder.
01:33The grave abuse and disrespect to our system of laws must stop.
01:38This disorder must cease in our society and in our country.
02:01Effective today, all POGOS are banned.

02:35I hereby instruct PAGCOR to wind down and cease the operations of POGOS by the end of the year.

02:48The DOLE, in coordination with our economic managers,
02:52shall use the time between now and then to find new jobs for our countrymen who will be displaced.

03:01President Marcos also reiterated the country's rights over the West Philippine Sea,
03:06advocating for peaceful means to resolve the issue.
03:09We are now more conscious as a people and strategic in heightening our aerial and maritime domain awareness.
03:15We are continuing to strengthen our defensive posture,
03:18both through developing self-reliance and through partnerships with like-minded states.
03:23The West Philippine Sea is not just our imagination.
03:28It is ours. It is ours.

04:00And we will continue to do so as long as the spirit of our beloved country, the Philippines, is alive.

04:19We will strengthen and nurture the awareness and knowledge of the entire country
04:25and ensure that we can pass it on to our children and future generations.
04:32Laws on our maritime zones and archipelagic sea lanes
04:36make sure that this intergenerational mandate, this duty,
04:41will firmly take root in the hearts and minds of all our people.
04:45In the entire Armed Forces, the Coast Guard, and our fishermen in the West Philippine Sea,
04:52you are the ones who hold the heart of gratitude of the entire nation
04:57because of your hard work and sacrifice.

05:03He also stressed the government's commitment to build and rehabilitate more dams
05:08and farm-to-market roads to boost agricultural production.
05:12He assured that the government will continue to work to ensure food security
05:16and make food affordable to the public.
05:18The people of the country have served their countrymen in times of high food prices.
05:25Because this has been effective, the food centers will continue to operate.
05:30The local governments are pleased.
05:32We have added more food workers to different parts of the country.
05:37Above all, our goal is to make it permanent and to increase the number of volunteers.
05:45President Marcos highlighted his anti-corruption program
05:48and vowed to pursue the completion of new specialty centers for cancer patients.
05:53He also announced that around 100 projects,
05:56with a total investment amounting to 3 trillion pesos across multiple sectors,
06:01are now Green Lane certified.
06:03He declared, the country is in the middle of a railway renaissance
06:06emphasizing the progress of various rail line projects.
06:10President Marcos also mentioned that 10 million unique user devices
06:14in over 13,000 areas in the country are benefiting from the government's free Wi-Fi program.
06:20For the education sector, he believes the Department of Education
06:24or Deputy Secretary Juan Edgar Dusani Angara
06:27will lead the department in providing quality education to students
06:31and focusing on the needs of teachers.
06:33And so, as we build and upgrade schools,
06:36so too must we uplift and upskill our teachers
06:40whose competence and trademark Filipino patience, determination, and compassion
06:45will be at the core of our national learning recovery.
06:50We added more employees who will work with the teachers
06:54to support the various activities in the school.
06:59So now, our teachers will learn well in their profession of teaching.
07:05He also emphasized the government's efforts in achieving a better economy
07:09which includes job opportunities for Filipinos.
07:12Our poverty rate has significantly dropped to 15.5% down from 18% in 2021.
07:21This present figure is even lower than the pre-pandemic level of 16.7% in 2018.
07:31This is equivalent to almost two and a half million Filipinos
07:39who have been uplifted from poverty.
07:42The president also has a message for overseas Filipino workers.
07:49To our OFWs, according to the Banko Sentral,
07:54more than 37 billion dollars were sent to the country by our OFWs last year.
08:10This is a huge help to our evolving economy.
08:15So we are not only thankful, but we are also proud of what we are doing for our OFWs.
08:27I hope they can see this.
