00:04CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:31Good afternoon and welcome to Countdown.
00:33Now, as the song goes, everybody needs good neighbours,
00:36though clearly not everyone has them,
00:39as ten million of you experienced some kind of next-door dilemma
00:45in the last year alone.
00:47Hi, Rachel. Hi, Geoff.
00:49What do you think the top five causes of rows between neighbours are?
00:53I've got a list of them here.
00:55OK, it's got to be something like your pedge is over my bit, or...
00:59No, noisy.
01:01I suppose, yeah, poor upkeep of gardens, that would count as hedges.
01:04Being noisy, particularly obviously late at night,
01:07or indeed early in the morning.
01:09Steal your mail.
01:11Steal your mail? What sort of neighbours have you got, for goodness' sake?
01:15No, stealing your parking place in the road, that's one.
01:19Being nosy or interfering is another.
01:22Noisy children, balls coming over fences.
01:26We have that, but only because of the cats.
01:29I'm not a very good shot. I just keep lobbing them next door.
01:32The kids come round to get their balls and I go round to get mine.
01:36So you keep lobbing your cats next door?
01:39No, they like bouncy balls, so I just get a bit vigorous with my bounce.
01:44Oh, I see. Right, over-vigorous, thanks.
01:47OK, let's meet our contestants today, shall we?
01:50They don't need to be over-vigorous, not for the next 40 minutes or so.
01:53Our returning champion is Nicky Roberts.
01:55Nicky made an impressive debut, good win over Wayne Chadwick.
01:58She's a housewife from Whitford in Hertfordshire.
02:02We established in the last show that she enjoys going on Twitter.
02:06What sort of things are you right about when you're on Twitter, Nicky?
02:09A lot of the time it's communal watching a television programme.
02:13X Factor is a popular one, Question Time.
02:16Gets a lot of the political jokes out.
02:20Twitter's one of those things that the more you give into it, the more you get out of it,
02:23and it depends on who you follow.
02:25It's interesting, it sort of divides people, doesn't it, Twitter?
02:27Some people love it and some people hate it.
02:30Nicky's our returning champion. Up against Nicky today is June McGregor.
02:33June's from Swindon in Wiltshire.
02:35She's a receptionist-cum-administrator for Relate.
02:38She likes gardening and going on guided walks, which is fine,
02:41but she also likes listening and dancing to live rock music.
02:45Afraid so.
02:48Any particular live bands you like?
02:50We have a lot of tribute bands in our local pub.
02:53Just general, easy listening, dancing.
02:56Just like letting yourself go?
02:58Yes.
02:59June, you say your favourite place is Tenerife.
03:02Can you speak the language?
03:04I've had Spanish classes for two years. I'm getting there.
03:08Getting there? That's really good. Very impressive that you're trying, at least, which is great.
03:12June McGregor, our challenger against our champion, Nicky Roberts.
03:18And in Dictionary Corner, for the final time this week,
03:21sitting alongside Susie Dent, please welcome Annika Rice.
03:31Look, we love having everybody here, young and old, in the Countdown audience.
03:36Today's a bit special.
03:38I just want to say hello to a gentleman in our audience today.
03:41There he is, in the front row, Leslie Roberts.
03:46And Leslie, I should tell you, on his next birthday, will be 101 years old.
03:52How about that?
04:01And did you notice that Leslie's sitting on the front row there
04:04and everybody else on the front row is a girl?
04:08Once you've got it, Leslie, you never lose it, do you?
04:11Lovely to see you.
04:13Let's put on with the contest, shall we?
04:15And Nicky's our champion, as such. She gets first pick. Off you go, Nicky.

08:59Heavens is absolutely lovely.
09:01Unfortunately, teases has to be with the two S's.
09:03I can absolutely see where you're coming from.
09:05In fact, in Old English, sometimes it was used with a Z,
09:07but not today, I'm afraid.
09:09Sorry, Anne.
09:11Heavens is great for seven.
09:13Annika, Susie, is there anything else?
09:15We can squeeze in a seventh for seventh heavens.
09:18Oh, very good. Very good.

11:07Mouser, yes, a cat. Very well done.
11:09And what else have we got in Dictionary Corner?
11:11Well, you're going to kick yourselves, soulmate.

11:19People who emulate or copy.
11:21Very good.
11:23APPLAUSE
11:27Nicky remains on 20.
11:29June reduces the gap.
11:31She's on 12.
11:33Time for the first numbers round of the contest now.
11:35Nicky, it's you to pick them, please.
11:37Could I have one large and five small, please, Rachel?
11:39Thank you, the ever-popular one large one and five small.
11:41Thank you, Nicky.
11:43And for this first numbers game,
11:45the numbers are eight, seven, ten,
11:47another eight,
11:49and three, and the large one, 50,
11:51and the target, 493.

12:39Times 50 is 250.
12:41No.
12:43Gone the wrong way.
12:45Gone the wrong way.
12:47Never mind, never mind.
12:50Nicky, can we hear yours?
12:5250 times ten.
12:5450 times ten. I think that's what June was going for.
12:56500.
12:58And take away the seven.
13:00And take away the seven. Easily done under the pressure.
13:02493.
13:07So Nicky moves on to 30 and June has 12.
13:09We've got a couple of minutes just to sit back and relax now
13:12because we're off to Dictionary Corner.
13:14Annika Rice has been our guest all this week
13:16and I think some people were shocked, Annika, you know,
13:19when I think it was 1994,
13:21absolutely at the peak of your powers in television terms, really,
13:24that you decided pretty much to call it a day for a while
13:27and go off and do something else.
13:29I just never saw my children.
13:31It was breaking my heart and they were about sort of three and four
13:34so I just literally went in and said to the controller of BBC One,
13:37then, I'm just going to take a sabbatical.
13:39And I literally stopped for, you know,
13:41yeah, I just gave up that sort of Saturday night BBC One thing
13:44and went to art school and painted
13:47and I've sort of been doing that ever since.
13:49And I've had some hilarious adventures, really, with my painting.
13:52I was painting in Norfolk during the summer
13:54and I decided to go and paint on this lovely island
13:57and there's a ferry that takes you out there
13:59and then because of the problems with the tides
14:01it has to wait till the end of the day to take you back again.
14:04So I set off and set up my easel at this very, very quiet private bit
14:08which I thought only I knew about
14:10and I just set up my easel and was just looking at the view
14:13and then to my horror, a young amorous couple came
14:16and set up a rug about ten feet in front of me
14:19but they didn't see me there
14:21and because they were facing the sun which was, you know, ahead of me
14:24and I was paralysed because I'd left it too long to go,
14:29hello, so I'm literally there with a brush
14:31and all sorts of things take place
14:33and I'm sort of edging behind this bush
14:36thinking, well, I'll just keep quiet and they'll never know
14:38and I was literally like this because I just didn't want to see anything.
14:41And then the ferryman came to take us all back again
14:44and they packed up all their stuff
14:46but they'd have known I was watching if I'd followed them
14:49so I stayed on the island and missed the ferry
14:51and had to actually ring up a friend who'd come out in a speedboat
14:54to come and collect me later because I was so traumatised.
14:57So I spent the whole afternoon, I didn't paint one bit of colour on my canvas
15:01I was hiding behind a bramble bush.
15:05Anyway, but mostly, you know, the joy of taking your paints outside
15:09is just glorious, you know, a fabulous hobby to have.
15:13Thanks very much indeed, Annika.
15:15Nick, you're on 30 then at the moment.
15:17June is on 12. Here's your first teaser this Friday.
15:20The words are TOO PLAIN, TOO PLAIN
15:23and the clue is if it's TOO PLAIN you can add some extras.
15:25The choice is yours.
15:27If it's TOO PLAIN you can add some extras.
15:29The choice is yours.
15:35APPLAUSE
15:41If it's TOO PLAIN you can add some extras.
15:43The choice is yours.
15:45OPTIONAL is the word we're looking for in our first teaser of the day.

22:22You can have it with or without the E.
22:24Yes, fantastic.
22:25It's the root of the term Jerusalem artichoke,
22:27and it's the American term for that.
22:29Well done.
22:30And, June, you got grills, did you do?
22:32Yeah.
22:33Gorillas.
22:34So close, wasn't it?
22:35I spotted that one.
22:37Well done.
22:38Gorillas is excellent for eight.
22:39Was that as good as it gets, eight?
22:41Yes.
22:42OK.
22:43Straight back to Dictionary Corner.
22:45Origins of Words, time for the final time this week.
22:47Susie, it's all yours.
22:49Well, I know in the past, Geoff, you've liked it
22:51when I've given you some insults that you might be able to use,
22:54and some of the most evocative words in the dictionary
22:56are, in fact, insulting.
22:58I'm going to give you just a selection of some,
23:00very old, very new,
23:02and see if you can maybe fit them into your armoury and use them.
23:06If you, in America, are a coarse or dull-witted person,
23:10you may be known as an apple-knocker.
23:13Shakespeare called an adulterer a bed-swerver,
23:16which is quite simple.
23:18A country person, in some dialects, is a chore-bacon.
23:22I like that one.
23:24A wonk today is a serious or studious person,
23:27usually a bit of a geek.
23:28And finally, another one that I like,
23:30probably because it describes myself,
23:32and that is a two-pot screamer, which, in Australia,
23:34is a person who gets drunk on a comparatively small amount of alcohol.
23:44Susie, Susie, Susie, you know two-pot screamer.
23:47One-pot screamer.
23:49OK. I thought you were going to say something worse.
23:54Nicky, you're 49, then. June on 24.
23:57Time for another numbers round now.
