09:35Which was
09:36Taupe
09:37Slightly different
09:38T-O-P-E-D
09:40Yes, it means to drink alcohol to excess, especially on a regular basis
09:43My dad used to say
09:45Son's over the yard, um, I think I'll have a taupe
09:48Is that true?
09:49Yeah
09:50Overtauped
09:51Very good, anything else?

11:24Alright, alright
11:25Twenty-four to twelve
11:27So Chris, first numbers game of the day, speak to Rachel about it
11:31I'll have three from the top and three from the bottom please
11:33Back to your usual three large and three small, thank you Chris
11:37And for the first time today, the numbers are

12:39Five times two, ten
12:41Take it away
12:42Five, six, five, well done
12:43Well done, very good
12:45Very good
12:47That takes us up to thirty-four to Fergus' twelve
12:53But now we're going to have a chat with Nicky Campbell
12:56Because Nicky, one of the things I find really quite remarkable is the skill that you display
13:02Managing your Sunday show on BBC One, you know, the big question
13:08And, I mean, that's, you know, you've got so many people trying to get in on the action, on the debate
13:14From wildly different viewpoints, I guess
13:19What's the skill there? How do you manage to control that lot?
13:24Well, I've been doing that for quite a long time
13:26I started off, actually, doing those sorts of shows in a programme in Fergus' area
13:32I don't know if Fergus is too young to remember, but Central Weekend Live
13:35I remember it well, yeah, I remember it well, yeah
13:37It was a late-night, sort of, debating arena
13:40And it could get really wild
13:42And we used to do everything
13:44You could do the Middle East, you could do something right at the other end of the spectrum
13:49Something about entertainment
13:50And we did three debates a night, and I did that for thirteen years
13:53So it was really in the lion's den
13:55I think, this is rather more refined on a Sunday morning
13:57This is about religion and morals and ethics
13:59But I kind of learned the trade a bit then
14:01I was attacked, the guy got nine months
14:03Really? He came for you?
14:05He came for everyone
14:06He was like the beast from the Blue Lagoon
14:09And he got out and he got back in the studio
14:11And I remember the security guards holding onto his legs
14:13And he was coming towards me, we had to break transmission
14:15This is why music is so important, because one has to completely get away from all that
14:20And that's why I love playing music and writing music
14:22And I took up the ukulele
14:24I played the piano and guitar, but I could recommend the ukulele to anyone
14:28It's a marvellous instrument
14:30And you sing along with it?
14:31Yeah, and funnily enough, when I was in Beijing
14:34During the last Olympics
14:36I took my ukulele with me to wind down in the hotel room
14:40And I was stopped by these rather forbidding guards
14:43Because they thought it was a gun
14:45Oh, is that right?
14:46Yeah, I remember
14:47So I took it out
14:48My whole demeanour's changed when I played I'll See You In My Dreams
14:53You didn't bring it?
14:54Today?
14:55No, I didn't
14:57When you come back next time, you bring it with you, will you?
15:00I think it's one of the few words in the English language of Hawaiian origin
15:05Yeah, it's wonderful
15:06Is that right?
15:07It means jumping flea
15:08Jumping flea?
15:09It's wonderful
15:10Really?
15:11Excellent stuff
15:12But now it's time for a tea time teaser
15:14And the teaser is malt beer
15:16And the clue, too much beer and he was this the next day
15:19Too much beer and he was this the next day
15:36Welcome back
15:37I left you with the clue

18:45Carline was another seven, which is a thistle-like European plant,
18:49or it also is a nautical term to do with pieces of square timber
18:53fitted fore and aft between the deck beams.
18:56A little known fact, I think you'll agree,
18:59apart from amongst the marine community.

22:06Right.
22:08And un-horse, to drag or cause someone to fall from a horse.
22:12To un-horse them.
22:13Yeah, to be un-horsed.
22:15To be dragged off a horse, really.
22:17If you fell off, would you be un-horsed?
22:19No.
22:20You'd just be silly, wouldn't you?
22:22All right, 54 to 25,
22:24but now, having dealt with un-horsing,
22:27what have you got for us, Susie?
22:28Origins of words.
22:30It's quite appropriate that we were talking about un-horsing.
22:32I had an e-mail from Jade Merrick, great name, asking me why we talk about steeple chasing.
22:39And it goes back, traces its origins to Ireland, like Fergus, in the mid-18th century.
22:45And these early races were like modern cross-country events, so natural hedges, fences, ditches, rivers, etc., were the obstacles.
22:54And they raced from church steeple to church steeple, so quite simple.
22:58But it got me thinking about horse racing, and everyone knows it's called the sport of kings.
23:03But if you trace that phrase, it's quite interesting as well, because the phrase was first recorded around 1668,
23:09and the sport of kings then was considered to be the more serious business of war.
23:14And in 1735, the meaning was stretched by William Somerville, who said that hunting was the sport of kings,
23:21image of war without its guilt. I'm not sure I'd agree with that.
23:24But the extension from hunting to horse racing then was a natural one.
23:28But it's a fascinating subject, horse racing. Not sure we all agree with it, but the vocabulary is very interesting.
23:34Because point-to-pointing is sort of steeple chasing.
23:37Similar, yeah.
23:38Isn't it, really? And in fact, steeple chasers go on point-to-point, really.
23:43Anyway, 54 to 25, Chris Needs, and we go into the numbers game, Fergus.
23:50One large and five small, please.
23:53Thank you, Fergus. One large, five little ones coming up.
23:57And for this round, the five small ones are 7, 5, 3, 10, and 2, and the large one, 50.
