00:00Good afternoon, and welcome to another edition of Countdown.
00:04Now, there's a man after my own heart celebrating his 51st birthday today.
00:09He's popular, handsome, well-groomed, of average height,
00:14and he's on television all the time, whether you like him or not.
00:17It's music guru Simon Cowell, so congratulations to him.
00:21Of course, there was a bit of a fuss a while ago, wasn't there,
00:23involving the X Factor and the debate about auto-tuning,
00:27the device where they used to embellish the voice of those who are singing,
00:32just in case they're singing slightly off-key.
00:35Now, some think it's cheating, making the contestants sound better than they actually are.
00:41But really, is it any different to what magazines do with photographs at the moment?
00:45I mean, they can make a woman's waistline smaller,
00:48they can smooth out the wrinkles, they can even give them a bigger bust.
00:52Now, I'm all for making a woman look and sound better by artificial means, if that's what's needed.
00:58But, for me, forget airbrushing, auto-tuning and photoshopping.
01:02There's a far simpler solution, never fails to work, six pints of lager.
01:09Afternoon, Rachel.
01:10Afternoon, Geoff.
01:11Auto-tuning, are you for or against or don't you care?
01:14Well, with my voice, and after your rendition of YMCA yesterday, I'm all for auto-tuning, yeah.
01:19I'm open-mouthed, I'm aghast, I hit all the right notes.
01:24Not always in the right order, but all the right notes.
01:27I just think you're more twinkle-toes than a singer.
01:30So you don't rate your voice, then?
01:32Absolutely not, worse than yours.
01:34Oh, OK, that's pretty bad, I have to say.
01:37Let's see if the contestants are tuned in today, I'm sure they are.
01:40Let's get this particular edition underway.
01:43We're going to meet our returning champion, Michael Chadwick, back for his fifth appearance.
01:47What sort of singing voice have you got, Michael?
01:49Er, not the best, but in karaoke booth after the six pints of lager again, I probably think it's better than it is.
01:56Hey, but look, 111 in your last game against Jude Bell, your top score so far.
02:01Are you finding it more comfortable as the rounds go on?
02:04Yeah, I think I'm settling in, hopefully, so I'll become crashing down to earth now.
02:08Settled in very impressively so far, Michael, well done.
02:11Up against you today is Elle Chilton-Knight, who is originally from Halifax, lived in Essex,
02:18currently lives in Newcastle, where she's studying politics and sociology.
02:23So you're a girl who gets around a bit.
02:25Yeah, I'm afraid.
02:27Elle says her ambition is not to embarrass herself on national TV.
02:30Well, I say that to myself every day. It's never worked.
02:33So you're feeling relaxed and confident?
02:36Yeah.
02:37And I know you've got some friends in the audience who are here to shout you on as well.
02:41OK, Elle Chilton-Knight is our challenger today.
02:44Best of luck to her and our champion, Michael Chadwick.
02:53In the corner today, she's got the Lex Factor, Susie Dent,
02:57and she's partnered by soccer legend turned sports broadcaster, Matt Matissier.
03:03APPLAUSE
03:08Fan of the X Factor, Matt?
03:10I'll tune in occasionally, but not avid.
03:14I've got better things to do on a Saturday night.
03:17You, Susie?
03:18Yeah, pass for me, too.
03:20You don't know what you're missing in the X Factor, the talent that that's produced over the years.
03:24Chico?
03:26Same difference.
03:28Oh, yeah.
03:29Jed Wood?
03:30No, I mean, marvellous.
03:31Absolutely.
03:32We've got all the box sets in the ceiling now, so believe you me.
03:36OK, let's pass on with the contest, shall we?
03:39First of all, our returning champion, Michael.
03:41He gets first pick of the letters. Off you go, Michael.
03:43Thanks, Geoff.
03:44Hi, Rachel.
03:45Hi, Michael.
03:46Start with a consonant, please.
03:47Thank you. Start today with S.

04:59Six.
05:00And Michael?
05:01Six as well.
05:02What's yours, Michael?
05:03Strain.
05:04And L?
05:05Nudist.
05:06OK.
05:07Yeah, strain and nudist, both great for six.
05:11For a moment I thought the pen cam was poised, but it's swiftly been put away.
05:15It has indeed. We also had a six in Strand,
05:19and we were looking at disdain with a T to see if that was in there,
05:25but sadly not, and that's why the pen cam was quickly removed.
05:29Apologies.
05:31What's that, Rachel?
05:32It's probably what you're wearing whilst you're watching X Factor.
05:35Ah!
05:37A unitard.
05:39They're quite ugly, but you're right, Jeff might be wearing one at some point.
05:43They're in!
05:44Tight-fitting, one-piece garments of stretchable fabric
05:47which cover the body from the neck to the knees or the feet.
05:50APPLAUSE
05:54If it's comfortable, why not?
05:58Michael's on six and so is L after that opening round.
06:01L, it's your pick of the letters.
06:03Hi, Rachel. Can I have a consonant, please?

07:15OK. L?
07:16Just a six.
07:17OK, what's the 6L?
07:18And the 7, Michael?
07:20Falsies.
07:22Falsies!
07:23Yes.
07:24He's nodding his head knowingly.
07:25We also had falsies.
07:27Part of material in women's clothing used to increase the apparent size of the breasts.
07:31Or it can be for eyelashes as well.
07:33Oh, yeah. OK.
07:35Michael, it's you to choose.
07:36A consonant, please, Rachel.
07:38Thank you, Michael.
07:39N.

07:53And a vowel.

07:57Another consonant, please.
08:00F.
08:02A consonant.

08:12And a final O.
08:15Time starts now.
08:46Er, not too easy, this one.
08:48L?
08:49Just a five.
08:50Er, Michael?
08:51A seven.
08:52OK, what's the 5L?
08:53Erm, spawn.
08:54And the 7, Michael?
08:55Weapons.
08:56Hmm.
08:57Yeah.
08:58Is there, yeah.
08:59Was it just one of the only seven?
09:00Yeah, it was the only one that leapt out, really.
09:02Yeah, it did.
09:03And that was it.
09:04Yeah.
09:05OK.
09:06Er, L, it's your pick of the letters, please.
09:08Erm, consonant, please, Rachel.
09:09Thank you.
09:10L.
09:11R.
09:12Erm, and a vowel.
09:15E.
09:16Er, another vowel.
09:18I.
09:19Er, consonant.
09:21M.
09:23Consonant.
09:25L.
09:27Er, another consonant, please.

09:31A vowel.
09:33O.
09:35Erm, another vowel, please.
09:38Another E.
09:39And a consonant.
09:41And finally, R.
09:43Here's the Countdown Clock.
10:14Michael, what have you got?
10:16Er, I think I've got a 7.
10:18OK, L?
10:19Risky 8.
10:20OK.
10:21Er, Michael, what's the 7?
10:22Trireme.
10:24And the risky 8, L?
10:25Loiterer.
10:26Yes.
10:27Loiterer.
10:28It's in the dictionary we just checked.
10:29Well done.
10:30Very good.
10:36A very good 8.
10:37Loiterer.
10:38Erm...
10:39I'll just tell you what a trireme is, because it's a lovely word.
10:41It's an ancient Greek or Roman war galley with three banks of oars.
10:44Very nice.
10:45Couldn't beat it.
10:46No.
10:47We matched it, but couldn't beat it.
10:48Yeah, loiterer.
10:49Excellent.
10:50It means that Michael is on 20, but L closes the gap now.
10:52She moves on to 14.
10:54And we move on to the first numbers round of the contest.
10:56Michael, it's you to pick them.
10:58One large, five small, please, Rachel.
11:00The usual.
11:01Thank you, Michael.
11:02Go for an inverted T straight down the middle.
11:04And this first numbers game today,
11:06the numbers are 9, 10, 7, 5, 9,
11:12and this time the large one, 100.
11:15And the target to get to, 926.
11:1830 seconds to reach 926.
11:36MUSIC
11:51Looking for 926 then.
11:53L?
11:54926.
11:55Michael?
11:56Yep, 926.
11:57OK.
11:58L, let's hear your version first, please.
12:009 times 100.
12:019 times 100 is 900.
12:03Plus the 10.
12:04Plus the 10.
12:05Plus the 7 and plus the 9.
12:07And the 7 and the 9 for 926.
12:09Nice and straightforward. Michael, same way?
12:11Same way, yeah.
12:19Michael then is on 30, L on 24.
12:23Time for them to relax for a minute or two.
12:25Matt Letizia, our guest in Dictionary Corner all this week.
12:28We've touched on a lot of football issues so far.
12:30Of course, you're a Guernsey boy, aren't you?
12:32I am indeed, yes. Born and bred.
12:34I left at 16 to join Southampton.
12:36I still go back there regularly.
12:38It's lovely to go back and see the family.
12:40I'm the only one of my family who's actually left the island.
12:42So it's always nice to go back and visit.
12:44So when you first came up, did your folks not come with you?
12:47No, no. I left at 16 to join Southampton.
12:50And I literally flew across.
12:52I stayed with friends of my mum and dad in Eastleigh the first night I was here.
12:58Went into the football club on the next day.
13:01And I was literally driven to a house.
13:03We were put in lodgings.
13:05A local family had offered to put up one of the boys.
13:08I was literally driven to a house and plonked in the front door with my two suitcases.
13:12And gone, there's your home for the next two years.
13:14Wow.
13:15Which was quite scary.
13:17But at 16, and you've kind of got the dreams of being a footballer in your head,
13:20you didn't really care where you were going to sleep because your job was at the football club.
13:24And that was pretty much all it was.
13:26Because as apprentices, it wasn't as cushy a life as it was when you turned professional.
13:31And you finished training at 12.30 and go off and play golf for the rest of the day.
13:35Apprentices, we were there.
13:37We were cleaning the stands.
13:38We were doing all sorts of menial chores around the stadium.
13:43And we were never leaving the ground until 5 o'clock.
13:45So, you know, it was almost like a full-time job.
13:49The only one you've ever had, Matt.
13:50Pretty much, yeah.
13:51Just one quick final thought.
13:53When your playing career was finished, why didn't you go on and become a referee?
14:00They weren't my favourite people in the world, I have to say.
14:03You could have changed it.
14:05I could have done.
14:06My brother's a referee.
14:07He's tried changing it from within.
14:10But no, I didn't think after 20 years of kind of continuous training,
14:16I thought it was time to have a rest.
14:18So I thought I'd come and sit with you on a Saturday.
14:20And those referees, they've got to run from one end of the pitch to the other as well.
14:23They're still fairly fit, yeah.
14:25I'm not sure if I could keep up with them.
14:26No.
14:27I'm pretty sure you couldn't.
14:29Thanks, Matt.
14:30Michael's on 30 at the moment, then Al has 24.
14:33Nice contest developing.
14:35Here's the first teaser of the day for you.
14:37The words are TENT PLAY.
14:39TENT PLAY.
14:40And the clue, it's clearly obvious as to who owns the licence.
14:44It's clearly obvious as to who owns the licence.
15:00It's clearly obvious as to who owns the licence.
15:03It's patently obvious, the answer to our first teaser of the day.
15:08Michael Chadwick's our returning champion on 30 at the moment.
15:11Our challenger, El Chilton-Knight, on 24.
15:14And El, it's you to pick.
15:16Can I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
15:17You can, thank you.
15:18L?
15:19Y.
15:20And another?
15:22L.

15:31And a consonant?
15:33N.
15:34And another consonant, please?
15:37G.
15:38And a vowel, please?
15:41O.
15:43And another vowel?
15:46A.
15:47And a consonant.
15:48And to finish?
15:50S.
15:51And your 30 seconds starts now.
15:58CLOCK TICKS

16:27What's yours, El?
16:28Ceiling.
16:29And yours, Michael?
16:30Same words.
16:32Ceiling.
16:34Good for seven.
16:35Now, can you improve on that, folks?
16:37Just by the one.
16:38There was gasoline in there.
16:40For eight.
16:41Very good.
16:48Michael, your pick.
16:50A consonant, please, Rachel?
16:52Thank you, Michael.

17:26And a final I.
17:28Here's the Countdown Clock.
17:30CLOCK TICKS
17:55CLOCK TICKS
18:01El, how many this time?
18:03A risky seven.
18:04Risky seven. Michael?
18:05I've got a seven, but I haven't written it down.
18:07OK. Let's have yours then, Michael, please.
18:09Vetoing.
18:10Adele?
18:11Ovating.
18:13Ovate will be there, certainly, as an adjective.
18:18As an adjective and a noun, but not a verb, I'm afraid.
18:21So we can't have ovating.
18:23Vetoing, fine, though, for a seven.
18:25What else have you got in Dictionary Corner?
18:27There was one eight-letter word in there.
18:29Pinotage.
18:30Yes, a variety of red wine grape grown in South Africa.
18:33OK. Michael moves on to 44.
18:36El has 31.
18:38El, it's you to choose.
18:40Can I start with a vowel, please?
18:42You can. Thank you, El.

19:47Michael.
19:48Seven.
19:49And El?
19:50Corpse.
19:51What's the 6L?

19:53And the 7, Michael?

19:56Very nice, yes.
19:57Very good.
19:59Matt, Susie, what else have you got?
20:01There was also another seven, campers,
20:04but there was an eight in there.
20:06Compares.
20:07OK, very good.
20:09Michael, it's you to pick.
20:11A consonant, please, Rachel.
20:13Thank you, Michael.

20:43And a final consonant, please?
20:45And a final C.
20:47And your 30 seconds starts now.
21:18What have you got this time, El?
21:21Eight.
21:22And Michael?
21:23Just seven.
21:24OK, Michael, what's the 7?
21:25Coaster.
21:26And the 8L?
21:27Comatose.
21:28Very good.
21:29Brilliant, well done.
21:30Very, very good.
21:31APPLAUSE
21:37Excellent, comatose.
21:39Puts El right back in the contest, really.
21:41Michael on 51 and El on 39.
21:44Again, time for them to take a short breather
21:46because we're off to Dictionary Corner.
21:48It's Origins of Words time once again, Susie.
21:50Yes, your turn, Geoff.
21:51Yeah, I knew it was my turn.
21:53You look very resigned.
21:55But it's quite a nice one today, I think, anyway.
21:58Right.
21:59OK, the word that you have to get some meaning for is nipotate.
22:03Nipotate.
22:04So N-I-P-P-I-T-A-T-E.
22:08Does nipotate mean...
22:10If you do something in a nipotate way, you do it on the hoof.
22:13So does it mean sort of instinctively, impetuously and quite quickly?
22:18Or is it B, an obscure word meaning good, strong ale?
22:22Or is it C, another version of nippety-tuck or nip and tuck,
22:27something that's so closely contested it's hard to call the winner?
22:32No, I immediately ruled out on the hoof when you said it.
22:36Now I've had to rule it back in again.
22:39And that's what I'm going to go for.
22:41Wrong!
22:43You say that with such glee, Susie!
22:45Sorry, wrong.
22:47It is an old word,
22:49although you will still find it on some pub signs when they tend to Latinise it,
22:53which means good, strong ale.
22:55It goes back to the 1600s.
22:57Probably comes from a Dutch verb nippen, which means to sip.
23:00And that word's also given us a nip, as in a nip of brandy.
23:03Nippeken, the small vessel used for measuring liquid quantities.
23:07And probably also nappy.
23:09You know, if you have a nappy beer, it's sort of foaming.
23:11The sort of foaming, heady beer is nappy.
23:14So, yeah, you can go into the pub and ask for a pint of nippetate.
23:18Can you imagine the landlord's reaction if I went in and said,
23:21you know, a pint of nippetate?
23:23He'd think I'd had a few already. Ouch!
23:26Back to the contest, then.
23:28Michael has 51 and Elle has 39 at the moment.

32:12So, I did nine by 75.
32:15Nine by 75 for 675.
32:18And then I think if you add the five, the eight and the seven...
32:22Five and eight and seven for 20.
32:24And take it off.
32:25And they get 655, one away.
32:27Well done. 656, is that possible, Rachel?
32:30And Matt's looking at me over there as if he might have got it.
32:33I'll have a go.

33:44Elle has the last word with Whispered.
33:47But Michael has won once again.
33:50Five in a row for him.
33:51Now 78.
33:52Elle has finished on 59.
33:55And, Elle, you had him going a little bit.
33:5751-49, I think it was.
33:59Comatose.
34:00Got ahead of myself a bit, I think.
34:02Look, well played. It's been lovely having you here.
34:04Thanks.
34:05And five wins in a row, Michael.
34:07You go from strength to strength.
34:08Yeah, well, I'm not sure about that, but I'll keep plodding on.

34:14Thank you. It's very kind.
34:15And talking of plodding, Matt.
34:17Thanks very much.
34:18It's been good to have you here once again.
34:20I mentioned not going to be a referee.
34:22Why not management?
34:24I'm not sure I really would suit having a job that is kind of 24-7.
34:31And I kind of like my golf too much,
34:34and I like a little bit of spare time,
34:36and managers don't seem to have that much.
34:39So, no, I think it's best for me if I steer clear of that.
34:43And I haven't got any coaching badges or anything,
34:45so people wouldn't touch my CV with a barge pole.
34:48OK.
34:49Well, if you've got any spare time tomorrow, come back again, will you?
34:52I'd love to.
34:53We'll see you then.
34:54And Susie, Rachel, great idea tonight.
34:56I think it's off to the bar, pork scratchings,
34:59and a couple of pints of Nipotate.
35:01OK?
