00:00Hi kids! Today we will learn about the human skeletal system. So let's start!
00:10Our skeletal system is the internal framework of our body.
00:16It is composed of 270 bones at the time of our birth.
00:25And later on, as we grow, the number of bones reduces to 206 by our adulthood.
00:36Our skeletal system has six major functions.
00:41It provides support to the body, helps in movement of the body and its various parts.
00:51It protects the internal organs.
00:55It produces blood cells, store ions and regulate endocrine.
01:04Now let's learn the role of skeletal system in a bit detail.
01:12First is support.
01:16Skeletal system forms the framework that supports the body and maintains its shape.
01:25Movement.
01:27There are various types of joints in our skeletal system that allows various types of movements.
01:34Like we can revolve our wrist.
01:37We can move our neck left, right, up, down.
01:43All types of movements in our body are possible due to the collective action of bones and muscles.
01:55The skeletal system protects our internal organs from any kind of injury.
02:03Example.
02:04Our brain stays protected inside the hard bony cover called a skull.
02:12Our rib cage protects the delicate organs, lungs and heart.
02:20The blood cells of our body are produced in the bone marrow which lies inside the bones.
02:30Production of blood cells is called hemopoiesis.
02:36In children, hemopoiesis occurs primarily in the marrow of the long bones such as femur and tibia.
02:47One of the most important functions of bones is to store calcium and iron.
02:55So we learnt about the functions or role of our skeletal system.
03:01Now let's learn about the structure and composition of our bones.
03:07Bones comes in different shapes as well as sizes.
03:13Bones have a very complex internal and external structure.
03:19Bones are light in weight but very strong and hard.
03:25Bones have a hard outer layer called cortical or compact bone which is strong, dense and tough.
03:37And a spongy inner layer called cancellous bone.
03:44Bones of a living person have their own blood vessels and are made of living cells which help them to grow and to repair themselves.
03:57Bones consist of 65% of inorganic matter and 35% of organic matter.
04:10Inorganic matter constitutes of calcium and phosphorus but there are also traces of magnesium, potassium, zinc and copper.
04:25Organic matter constitutes mainly of collagen and protein.
04:33At the time of birth we have 270 bones but many of these bones fuse together later on.
04:44And an adult body has 206 bones.
04:51We will learn the names of bones in our skeletal system in our next assignment.
04:58Well, the largest bone in the human body is femur or the thigh bone.
05:07And the smallest bone is the stapes which is present in our middle ear.
05:17So kids, today we learned a lot about our skeletal system.
05:23Now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more.
05:27Bye-bye.
