00:00:00Well, I think that was thoroughly enjoyable, wasn't it, Laura? If you're sitting at home
00:00:06on a Thursday afternoon, I don't think you could be asked to be any more entertained
00:00:10than that.
00:00:11It is. It is really entertaining because since the beginning of the game, we see already
00:00:15goals and teams really pushing really forward to win the game. So it's been really exciting.
00:00:21Yeah, Morocco came out. Obviously, they knew a win would see them go top of the group,
00:00:26a draw would be enough. And they're playing against a team that have never had a win in
00:00:29World Cup history. But they came out as if they were playing a team that was really going
00:00:33to come at them. And there was such intense energy, wasn't there for them?
00:00:36Yeah, and I think that's what you have to do. It's not really about the other team ever.
00:00:39It's about what you're bringing to the party. And I think Morocco just came very professional
00:00:44to deal with it, high tempo, kind of got lucky with the first goal. But they set their stall
00:00:49out from the first minute that they were going to boss this and demand the game.
00:00:52Let's have a little look at the first goal then because it is the season of goodwill
00:00:56to all men. And this was gift wrapped to them, wasn't it? And Bozsian will perhaps be
00:01:02ruining his performance here.
00:01:03Yeah, but the point is the press. For a striker, you could give up on that and you don't put
00:01:12pressure on the goalkeeper and then the goal never happens. So I'm not sure why he didn't
00:01:16just clear it, but he tries to take a touch. And then that man, Ziyech, this is a really
00:01:22nice finish. That's the technique we're talking about before the game because it looks simple,
00:01:27but it isn't.
00:01:28It could still go wrong.
00:01:29Yeah, he's still got a little bit of work to do to relax himself, compose himself. And
00:01:33you can see the technique's just beautiful. He just guides it into the net.
00:01:38I think what is important is that he's been really focused right away from the beginning
00:01:42of the game. This is really important.
00:01:44And that's tough then for Kalinder, isn't it? Because they're always going to be up
00:01:47against it because of the golfing kind of places and class. But then you just feel like
00:01:52your backs are against the wall. And then they made it 2-0. Nnaziri becomes the first
00:01:56Moroccan player to score in multiple World Cups, his fourth in seven. And this was, I
00:02:03think, a beauty.
00:02:05Yeah, it was. From a Moroccan point of view, the two centre-halves here aren't happy about
00:02:10the defending. But the ball, it's a nice... They've just turned the Canada defence with
00:02:16this ball from Hakimi. A good run from the striker in between two centre-backs. And a
00:02:21really good finish again there. The goalkeeper, not really. I don't think he can get to that.
00:02:26There's too much pace on it. But the defending was a bit of an issue, I think.
00:02:30Yeah, they were on the same line. I think it was important to one of the central backs
00:02:36to be even deeper, to anticipate this ball. But before this goal, you can see the wingers
00:02:42going really slow to attack the ball, to defend. So it's always started with the forwards.
00:02:47We're not really pressuring the Moroccan players.
00:02:51And against the run of play, we end up with a scoreline that looks like Canada are really
00:02:55in this one. But it's obviously an OG for Agouard. Talk us through the defensive errors
00:03:02here.
00:03:03Well, they scored a goal but they haven't really done a lot to get it. You've got Agoubi
00:03:09and we've just highlighted here Agoudi. For me, I feel like he should be maybe four or
00:03:17five yards back towards that near post if you defend him across. And then he wouldn't
00:03:21be in a position where once he crosses it there, he has to stick his foot out and it
00:03:27goes in. I've done it many times myself. You find yourself in that position. But to
00:03:31be a centre-half player, you need to be in the middle of the goal. And then he would
00:03:34have been able to come onto it and clear it a bit better.
00:03:37You're nodding in agreement there.
00:03:39Yes. On this one, for the Canadian players, it's an opportunity to get back to the game.
00:03:45But it's true that Morocco was ahead of the game. But this is bringing them back to, OK,
00:03:51we need to be focused, to stay focused as defenders.
00:03:54Yeah, because you were obviously very impressed with the Moroccan defence going into this
00:03:56game. But Bono, the goalkeeper there, looks out at his defence and he still can't find
00:03:59what he's looking for.
00:04:02I knew it was coming.
00:04:03I'll just get my shoehorn and put it back in my bag. And there has been a chance before
00:04:12that for Canada. Etienne Buchanan, earlier in the game, had an opportunity at the game.
00:04:18At that point, you would have felt Canada were in it a little bit at that point. But
00:04:22we don't have too many chances to have a look at here.
00:04:25No, it was again against the run of play. It was a half chance. And Buchanan's been
00:04:34quite good all World Cup, to be honest. I think he's not had a bad World Cup next to
00:04:38Davies. We can see it now. This is Larrin, one of the only times they've drove forward.
00:04:47And then a bit of good play. And for once, Morocco didn't defend that one very well again.
00:04:52It's a half chance. Maybe if he goes with his left foot. It's a good ball. But maybe
00:04:58if he goes there, left foot, and he can kind of guide it in. But it's a half chance, really.
00:05:03Yeah. And on the break, obviously, which seems to be their best opportunity. We talked about
00:05:07Alphonso Davies ahead of this one, and he has been a class player to watch. But we're
00:05:12not seeing enough of him in this game. What's going on? Why are we not seeing him?
00:05:17I think first, the point that Laura made before the game about Morocco defending well,
00:05:22they've done that. They've nullified him. But his body language, as the game's going on,
00:05:26is getting worse and worse. His arms are in the air. He's getting very frustrated.
00:05:30You can see here, every time they get it, every time he gets it, there's one, two,
00:05:35three defenders around him, and they're making him turn back and pass back.
00:05:41So he's trying to find... He started right wing, he went left wing. And now you can see
00:05:47the frustration. It's just not happening for a minute. And then, all of a sudden,
00:05:52we see him going into these crazy positions, Laura, that you wouldn't expect him to be in.
00:05:57It's the type of... You can see the frustration of the player when he starts changing position,
00:06:02because he feels like he's not able to make the difference. So he's like, OK, maybe I need to drop,
00:06:08get this ball, touch the ball. And usually when they don't get the ball, they come to ask the
00:06:12ball in different positions. And he's still a young player. Even if he's talented,
00:06:17but he still needs to be calm. And he's still learning. He's still learning.
00:06:21His first game, because he'd come off a little bit of a niggle, he played quite deep, actually,
00:06:26against Belgium. Croatia, you saw him playing with confidence further up the pitch. And today,
00:06:30it's the third option, which is, I'll just go anywhere to try and find the ball. And he's,
00:06:34as you say, getting more and more frustrated as this game goes on.
00:06:37He's played about seven positions in this World Cup, hasn't he? But yeah, I think he needs to just
00:06:43kind of settle himself down now at half-time and get back to doing what he does best.
00:06:47Probably the best player on the pitch, bringing it back to Morocco, is Hakim Ziyech, obviously.
00:06:53The goal aside, he's been involved in so much, hasn't he?
00:06:57Yes. I mean, Ziyech is a player that everybody knows. He got cut from the national team,
00:07:01but he's back and everybody's expecting to see his technique. And today, he's been really
00:07:06brilliant. Really focused, as we say, right from the beginning, giving the right ball,
00:07:11like supporting this ball, but also crossing those walls. And as we see, he's really focused
00:07:21right from the beginning of the game. And he just has the right touch to score this first goal.
00:07:29His technique's brilliant. I think his first touch, we see it all the time where he stays
00:07:33wide and long diagonal balls come to him, he doesn't finish it that well. But look,
00:07:38the touch, his touch is excellent. His technique's brilliant, left-footed, as you'd expect. But
00:07:44it must be a nightmare to play against if you're a full-back, because you know he wants to get to
00:07:48the left foot, but you can't really stop it, just because he's so good with his feet.
00:07:52So, Kalinder, they're getting a bit of a hiding, aren't they? And it's not looking like they're
00:07:56going to come away from here with that elusive first win at a World Cup. And they've talked,
00:08:01their coach has talked about their lack of game time against opposition outside of their area,
00:08:07their region, and how it would be great to play more European and more African opposition. And
00:08:13you were saying, as a Wales player, you very rarely played anybody a handful of times outside
00:08:17of Europe. Yeah, I think that we've seen that in the World Cup, where it's all well and good in
00:08:23your continents tournament. But then when you come to a World Cup, there's so many different
00:08:28styles of play. I think for Canada, that's a classic example. They've come up against teams
00:08:34that they're not used to playing against. When Wales played Iran, I know they haven't seen
00:08:38anything like that at all. So it's something that I think the federations need to be looking
00:08:43at to go to different places and play games. Especially with them being one of the hosts,
00:08:47Laura, as well, in four years' time. They want to turn up at their own World Cup, don't they?
00:08:52And they haven't got any qualifying games. They need to get some experience somewhere.
00:08:57You need to play other teams, other cultural teams. And if I talk about the women's World Cup,
00:09:02and why they want to have women's World Cup, even in Africa or other continents, it's because they
00:09:07know that some federations in Africa never get the chance to have players playing abroad. That's
00:09:13why World Cups are organised everywhere in the world, to make sure that some continents get to
00:09:18focus and get to play worldwide teams. Because we should just say, you know,
00:09:22they qualified top of their group, and they even beat Mexico on the way to get here. So
00:09:26they've beaten some decent opposition, but maybe not outside of their CONCACAF area.
00:09:30OK, elsewhere in Group F, Croatia are taking on Belgium, who need at least a draw to stand
00:09:36any chance of going through. So here's the best of the action from the first half.
00:09:43Croatia to get the very first World Cup meeting between these two nations underway. If Belgium
00:09:48draw, they have to rely on others. If they win, they're guaranteed a place in the knockout stages.
00:09:53Croatia straight away, with an effort inside, 10 seconds from Perisic.
00:10:02De Bruyne, options left and right, he's looking for Mertens.
00:10:08Well, it's a brilliant counter-attack, and De Bruyne is right at the heart of it,
00:10:11and he puts it on a plate for Dries Mertens, but he gets the technique all wrong.
00:10:15Modric with it, in towards Lovren, it was well defended by Votonga. Oh, that was Roush, it's a penalty!
00:10:26Inside, 15 minutes, penalty to Croatia.
00:10:33Marco Fritz, the German in charge of VAR, is now asking Anthony Taylor to have a look at this.
00:10:40They're checking offside. Which is not what it's designed to do.
00:10:47No penalty. He said it's offside. Why can't Marco Fritz just tell Anthony Taylor it's offside?
00:10:53Look at Luka Modric and the Croatians. There never seems to be a dull moment.
00:11:01And with plenty more news on that game, and plenty of other World Cup content across the BBC.
00:11:06For all the latest updates, team news, and expert analysis to share with your neighbours.
00:11:11What happens is, your wing-backs have bombed up the pitch, everyone's pressing, the front line's pressing,
00:11:15so that's a forward playing as a defender. If you don't win the ball back there, the ball's going to...
00:11:19The FIFA World Cup. Get more with the BBC Sport app.
00:11:26There are two more games later tonight, including Germany, who need a result to stay in the competition.
00:11:31Highlights with Mark Chapman from 11.40 on BBC One.
00:11:37The group stage concludes tomorrow. Korea face Portugal at 2.30 on BBC One.
00:11:41And I'll be at Ghana against Uruguay. That promises to be quite tasty on BBC Two at 2.45.
00:11:47In the meantime, head to the iPlayer to catch all episodes of the World Cup Match of the Day Top Ten.
00:11:53And there's plenty on there to amuse the children too.
00:11:58If you want more family football entertainment, then BBC iPlayer has got you covered.
00:12:02Are we ready for this?
00:12:04There's drama with Jamie Johnson.
00:12:06This is me, Corby.
00:12:08What's that?
00:12:10Phoenix's reputation is on the line.
00:12:12And inspiring stories on the Football Academy.
00:12:14It's been the best five years of my life.
00:12:16We made it through to the finals.
00:12:18It was all buzzing.
00:12:20I just wish I could be a professional footballer now.
00:12:22Watch the best football shows together this winter on BBC iPlayer.
00:12:28Teams will be out in a few minutes' time.
00:12:32Final messages being given in those dressing rooms for Morocco.
00:12:34You know, in control.
00:12:36Everything looks like it's going to plan.
00:12:38For Canada, what do you do that you can leave this World Cup with something?
00:12:42Even if it's a point.
00:12:44I think you've just got to show a little bit more emphasis
00:12:46and try and take the game to Morocco.
00:12:48Get your good players, get Davies on the ball
00:12:50where he wants it, not in front of his centre-ass.
00:12:52Get him wide. Get the ball to him.
00:12:54Deal with Morocco a little bit better than they have.
00:12:56From Morocco's point of view, I think it's much the same.
00:12:58Stay focused.
00:13:00If I was a coach from Morocco,
00:13:02stay focused.
00:13:04We're not going to wait for the players.
00:13:06We still need to attack.
00:13:08But when we lose the ball, we stay really aggressive
00:13:10and we're not conceding any action
00:13:12for the Canadian players.
00:13:14And the Canadian defence, you were waxing lyrical
00:13:16about the Moroccan defence,
00:13:18but the Canadian defence just needs to be a little bit more focused.
00:13:20Yes, a little bit more focused.
00:13:22They need to communicate even better
00:13:25to support each other.
00:13:27And if I was the coach of Canada, I would just talk to Davies
00:13:29and say, we need you, but just focus.
00:13:31You don't need to go everywhere.
00:13:33Just be in your position and do what you know how to do.
00:13:35The problem is he's young and he's got too much energy.
00:13:37He does have a lot of energy.
00:13:39He's frustrated. This is the last game for him.
00:13:41He knows that they're out of it now,
00:13:43so he wants the ball.
00:13:45He wants to show what he can do,
00:13:47but he needs to be a little bit more patient with it, I suppose,
00:13:49and trust his team that they will get it to him
00:13:51in the right spot.
00:13:54Here's a reminder of how the first 45 panned out.
00:13:56So the turn of Group F
00:13:58to reach its conclusion.
00:14:00What's the goalkeeper done there?
00:14:02Oh, it's in!
00:14:04Desarbo!
00:14:06All in behind looking for Endaziri.
00:14:082-0!
00:14:12Yacoubi.
00:14:14Oh, it's in!
00:14:16And the first home goal of the tournament.
00:14:22OK, we're about to get underway.
00:14:25The Canadian fans still smiling in spite of their team.
00:14:27Looking like they're going away from this competition
00:14:29without their first ever win.
00:14:31Morocco, though,
00:14:33know that they are just 45 minutes away
00:14:35from the last 16
00:14:37and possibly topping the group.
00:14:39Let's get back then to Martin Keogh
00:14:41and Robin Cowan.
00:14:45Thank you, Gabby.
00:14:47No changes for either side.
00:14:51Morocco look like they were cruising.
00:14:53To the next stage of the competition,
00:14:55but that own goal
00:14:57from Aguerre
00:14:59just sowed some seeds of doubt.
00:15:05Canada have been given
00:15:07half a chance
00:15:09of picking up their first ever point
00:15:11in the World Cup finals.
00:15:19Martin Keogh,
00:15:22Martin, you were as frustrated
00:15:24as Alphonso Davies
00:15:26looks on the field.
00:15:28Well, of course, you know, I think
00:15:30in their very first game against Belgium,
00:15:32I saw something really quite, well, not unique, of course,
00:15:34but they played with three players on the right-hand side,
00:15:36played with the back three. Belgium just didn't know
00:15:38how to cope with them. Davies was playing as a
00:15:40left-wing back, and he looked
00:15:42outstanding.
00:15:44And since then, he's been moved now again here.
00:15:46He's gone very central. He's almost playing centre-forward
00:15:48right now.
00:15:50I'm wondering if they've actually changed it
00:15:52to a back three here.
00:15:54They are very adaptable.
00:15:56As I said, almost beating themselves,
00:15:58I feel, by keep changing the system.
00:16:02Naziri,
00:16:04Inahi,
00:16:06going to get around Kamal Miller.
00:16:08The referee has given a foul
00:16:12in favour of the
00:16:14Montreal defender.
00:16:20Here's Tejan Buchanan.
00:16:24Skipping past Hakimi.
00:16:26Inahi there to
00:16:28clear up, and he was caught
00:16:30off the field.
00:16:34Limping back on now.
00:16:40Again, it's to Inahi.
00:16:44Impressive tournament so far, 22 years old.
00:16:47And Naziri again.
00:16:51That run off the shoulder
00:16:53of the last man.
00:16:55Ziyech, time to pick up his head
00:16:57and pick out the cross.
00:16:59Straight at the goalkeeper.
00:17:01Just too much on that ball
00:17:03coming in.
00:17:05Inverted winger
00:17:07playing on the right-hand side with a left foot.
00:17:11Clean challenge from Saïs.
00:17:13We've seen him for Wolves, haven't we?
00:17:15Playing in various positions midfield,
00:17:17but he's playing very well at the back there.
00:17:19Very commanding.
00:17:23Now with Bishiktas.
00:17:29More surprised to see him go.
00:17:31I don't think Wolves have been any better
00:17:33without him, I must say.
00:17:35It's not the defence that's the issue, is it?
00:17:37It's the other end of the pitch.
00:17:39You could start all over the pitch
00:17:42with Wolves.
00:17:44Julian Lopetegui.
00:17:46It's a big task on his hands.
00:17:48That feels a million miles away,
00:17:50the Premier League, this moment in time.
00:17:52Back on Boxing Day.
00:18:02All very strange.
00:18:04Winter World Cup.
00:18:06All very strange.
00:18:08If you did want to dig deeper
00:18:11into the issues surrounding the World Cup,
00:18:13I'd point you towards the iPlayer
00:18:15to watch the build-up to the first game
00:18:17between Qatar and Ecuador.
00:18:19Gary Lineker and the team
00:18:21running you through
00:18:25all of the issues.
00:18:31Unahi.
00:18:35Impressive close control.
00:18:37Slalom run.
00:18:41Here's Ziyech
00:18:43into Hakimi.
00:18:45The two deft from
00:18:47Unahi.
00:18:51And now perhaps Canada
00:18:53can catch Morocco on the break.
00:18:55Anakoubi.
00:18:57Not going to get past Amrabat.
00:19:01No, you saw that brilliant balance
00:19:03because it's a lovely little triangle
00:19:05on that right-hand side with their attacking players.
00:19:07Unahi getting forward is another one
00:19:09we don't know so much about him.
00:19:11But that man there is there to shut the door
00:19:13when they wander forward
00:19:15if there's a counter-attack.
00:19:17Really nice balance.
00:19:31You can really see why Morocco have this
00:19:33stellar defensive record.
00:19:35Positioning, commitment.
00:19:39And nobody really over-commits.
00:19:41They stay really compact.
00:19:49Vitoria
00:19:51of Johnston.
00:20:01Davis
00:20:03trying to shake off
00:20:05Amrabat
00:20:08That's good from Kay.
00:20:14Kay's trying to poke it
00:20:16towards Alphonso Davis
00:20:18but that breaks down.
00:20:20Now here's Ziyech.
00:20:24Tries to pick out
00:20:26Safian Boufal.
00:20:28Ziyech
00:20:34Serio there getting back.
00:20:36Definite foul.
00:20:38He's done well there actually. He's broke from midfield.
00:20:40Ziyech, really good ball.
00:20:42Swinging it out to the opposite side.
00:20:46I think there's definite effort here from Canada
00:20:48to try and play a little bit more centrally
00:20:50and just punch balls into that middle.
00:20:58Whistles
00:21:00turned up to 11.
00:21:04Buchanan
00:21:12Fans playing their part
00:21:14trying to put the Canadians off their
00:21:16off their passing game.
00:21:20Kay
00:21:22trying to play a little bit more centrally
00:21:24and just punch balls into that middle.
00:21:28Back to Miller.
00:21:34Adekube there could turn
00:21:36information into the player.
00:21:38He's going forward then backwards
00:21:40quite often.
00:21:50Drawing a bit more possession
00:21:52Canada at the very least.
00:21:54Osorio
00:21:58Timely slip but might still be something here.
00:22:02Davison Johnston
00:22:06Same wavelength.
00:22:12Indicating to the referee there might be something wrong with the ball
00:22:14I think.
00:22:22First substitution of the day.
00:22:25Ball for another.
00:22:29Well that can happen but very rarely.
00:22:35Maybe that's why the Canadians feel their passing
00:22:37isn't what it should be because the ball
00:22:39hasn't got the right amount of air and pressure in it.
00:22:41Let's see.
00:22:43Are they any better with this ball?
00:22:45Not sure they can
00:22:47have that excuse for
00:22:51nearly 55 minutes.
00:22:55Ziyech
00:23:01Body swerve
00:23:05Push to the floor.
00:23:25Sabiri
00:23:41Saïs' pass easily intercepted.
00:23:51Certainly got a lot more players
00:23:53Canada further up the pitch on that front line
00:23:55I'm counting there. Five players
00:23:57strung out across the top line
00:23:59forcing them back a little bit Morocco.
00:24:13Manakoubi
00:24:15into Alphonso Davies
00:24:19Left the ball behind
00:24:22by Ziyech
00:24:26He's so far there isn't he
00:24:28from his opponent's goal there
00:24:30quite happy to see him there
00:24:32if I was playing against him
00:24:34need to get him in a more central position
00:24:36higher up the pitch
00:24:38he needs to be patient as well
00:24:40wait for it to come to him
00:24:52Vitoria
00:24:54perhaps for
00:24:56Portuguese youth teams
00:25:00Hoylott
00:25:04Hoylott needs to do that far more
00:25:06go at players
00:25:08ask the question
00:25:10got a free kick here for his team
00:25:22Morocco have looked sturdy
00:25:24from set pieces
00:25:26so far during this tournament
00:25:44Not a bad delivery
00:25:46but too much speed on it
00:25:48for Carl Lahren to latch onto
00:25:52It's an in-swinging ball
00:25:54it's very difficult
00:25:56with that kind of pace on it
00:25:58to get anywhere near it
00:26:22Can they do it?
00:26:26Getting ready to make their first substitution
00:26:28a significant one it is to
00:26:30Thieber Hutchinson
00:26:32we're told this might be his final appearance
00:26:34for the national team
00:26:3739 years old
00:26:41became the oldest outfield player
00:26:43to play in the World Cup finals
00:26:45since Roger Miller
00:26:52clean wind back
00:26:54and some space here
00:26:56for Junior Hoylott
00:27:00just wide
00:27:04Alphonso Davies stuck out a leg
00:27:07when we talk about Hoylott
00:27:09getting into those channels
00:27:11and winning that ball back
00:27:13he's certainly done that there
00:27:15he's put it into an area
00:27:17okay
00:27:19didn't quite get on the end of it
00:27:22didn't get the finish that he required
00:27:24but it's better
00:27:29Sabiri floats it forward
00:27:32Endo Ziri
00:27:36crowded out of that one
00:27:38here's Kaye
00:27:40triple change coming up for Canada
00:27:52but incidentally
00:27:54the first time since 2016
00:27:56that Canada have lost three consecutive games
00:27:59of course they haven't actually been at a World Cup
00:28:01and face
00:28:03high level opposition
00:28:05since 1986 Mexico
00:28:07well I expect to see a recognised
00:28:09centre forward come on and give them some sort of
00:28:11chance to score a goal
00:28:13change in midfield looks likely
00:28:15probably Kaye will come off
00:28:19helps it
00:28:21it's a lot of space to run into
00:28:26facing up
00:28:28Kamal Miller
00:28:32support from
00:28:34Hakimi
00:28:44Hoylott goes down
00:28:48stayed down
00:28:51Morocco keep going
00:28:54with Mazraoui but the referee now
00:28:56has stopped play
00:28:58so Junior Hoylott could be seen too
00:29:06he just clatters into Hoylott
00:29:09the referee was right on top of that
00:29:16and then he runs over the top of him
00:29:21it's not appreciated
00:29:27so here come the changes for
00:29:32Canada
00:29:36Mark Anthony Kaye coming off
00:29:38Sam Adekube
00:29:40and Kyle Larin
00:29:44Jonathan David
00:29:51of Lille
00:29:55Ismael Kone
00:29:58and perhaps
00:30:00most significantly Atiba Hutchinson
00:30:04for his 101st cap
00:30:10and that's some feat isn't it
00:30:12100 caps incredible
00:30:1439 years of age still going strong
00:30:16that's really some effort
00:30:18and this could be it for him
00:30:20from an international point of view
00:30:22not a bad way to bow out
00:30:25he was the only current
00:30:27squad member that was actually born
00:30:29when Canada were
00:30:31last in a World Cup in 1986
00:30:34good knowledge
00:30:45Hakimi
00:30:48here is Hutchinson now
00:30:50wearing the captain's armband
00:30:52Ziyech
00:31:04still 0-0 in the other game
00:31:06between Croatia and Belgium
00:31:12so as it stands it will be
00:31:14Morocco going through as group winners
00:31:17Croatia in second place
00:31:22and the team ranked second
00:31:24in the FIFA rankings
00:31:26Belgium all over
00:31:28well that's really surprising
00:31:30and they haven't really been convincing
00:31:32that's another end of another era
00:31:34for another generation of players
00:31:36it's not over yet though
00:31:39Kamal Miller does really well under pressure
00:31:43where's Buchanan
00:31:47David has gone down the middle
00:31:49as a centre forward
00:31:51Hutchinson's coming to that midfield
00:31:58here's Kone
00:32:00he played well actually
00:32:02in the second game against Croatia
00:32:08defending from Amrabat
00:32:12Hutchinson, Osorio
00:32:17here's Hoylet
00:32:20trying to find the opening
00:32:22Amrabat shuts the door again
00:32:25Ziyech
00:32:29one trick too many perhaps
00:32:34well it's a really strong rear guard
00:32:36isn't it
00:32:38we talked about their distances
00:32:40if you look along that back line
00:32:42nothing too really far apart
00:32:44and they can't really find a way through
00:32:46here is Jonathan David
00:33:00oh Kone
00:33:02when he made his professional debut in February
00:33:12Miller
00:33:16Ziyech, threading the ball through the eye of a needle
00:33:27sandwiched
00:33:29Kaneda have it back, good spell of possession this
00:33:31well they've just got to do something with it now
00:33:39I just don't know why Kone wasn't on from the start
00:33:41it looks like somebody really wants the ball
00:33:43he's trying to control proceedings here
00:33:4620 years old
00:33:48imagine a player with much larger parts
00:33:50in the next World Cup
00:33:58more changes
00:34:03first for Morocco
00:34:08Zakaria Aboukal
00:34:13scored the second
00:34:16against Belgium
00:34:18Sofiane Bufal
00:34:21hasn't exerted his influence as much as he did
00:34:23in that previous game
00:34:29Abdulhamid Saberi
00:34:31the other player to come off
00:34:35Selim Amalat
00:34:37standard Liège
00:34:39Kone
00:34:44coming on
00:34:50and for Kaneda
00:34:52Jonathan Osorio
00:34:58off and Richie Lariat
00:35:00coming on
00:35:09Kaneda
00:35:13Buchanan
00:35:16low ball easily cleared
00:35:19Kone
00:35:37Kone pursued
00:35:39manages to keep the ball
00:35:41Miller, Kone
00:35:46Hoylert
00:35:49Alphonso Davies
00:35:54sharp turn
00:35:56can't quite get on to it
00:36:01better use of him
00:36:03I think maybe Davies is better on that left hand side
00:36:05either as a winger or as a wing back
00:36:07he just breaks into that space
00:36:09he just runs offside there
00:36:11just a little bit early
00:36:13but this is where he's at his best
00:36:15he just shows too much of that ball to his opponent
00:36:19Kone
00:36:27most of this half has been played
00:36:29in the Moroccan half
00:36:31as you alluded to Martin
00:36:33really got near the goalkeeper
00:36:35Kaneda
00:36:37no well they're 22 shots
00:36:39in the first game and they're really not
00:36:41committed to shooting
00:36:43they've gone to a back three now though
00:36:45Buchanan's playing as a wing back on this side
00:36:47Larry is playing as a wing back on
00:36:49the right hand side
00:36:51so it's complex, it's complicated
00:36:53the manager keeps changing it
00:36:55but I actually feel this is now a better shape
00:36:58we've got there in the end
00:37:00I'm not sure why it's taken so long
00:37:02to work this out
00:37:04anyway
00:37:06let's assume it's going to be better
00:37:08now for Kaneda
00:37:17Kone
00:37:22Alphonso Davis
00:37:24the flag's gone up
00:37:28midway point of the
00:37:30second half
00:37:47just three months
00:37:49before the start of the world cup
00:37:51Walid
00:37:53took charge
00:37:59he's helped extend their stay in Qatar
00:38:03Aboukar
00:38:17Zagat
00:38:25the supporters are almost like the heartbeat
00:38:27of the team aren't they
00:38:29the way they cheer, they get behind them
00:38:31absolutely brilliant
00:38:34Kone
00:38:36Kone
00:38:38Kone
00:38:40Kone
00:38:42Kone
00:38:44Kone
00:38:46Here comes Unahi once again
00:38:48so positive on the ball
00:38:50and now Ziyech
00:38:52space opening up for him
00:38:56well referees done well there I think
00:38:58Ziyech is looking isn't he for a free kick
00:39:00edge of the box, nowhere to go really for him
00:39:04interesting to see a repair of that
00:39:06told in no uncertain terms
00:39:08by the referee to get up
00:39:18Buchanan
00:39:20manages to get away from Unahi
00:39:26Amrabat
00:39:28displeased with that decision
00:39:30put the ball through his legs
00:39:32shown it in flashes
00:39:34only in flashes in this game
00:39:36and he's playing now on the left hand side
00:39:38I think it suits him to come in on that right foot of his
00:39:44little nutmeg by the way coming up here
00:39:46just watch this carefully look
00:39:54chance for the set piece
00:40:02looks like Alphonso Davies is going to accept responsibility
00:40:12curling ball in
00:40:14dealt with by Ziyech
00:40:22absolutely no danger there
00:40:24still got to be headed and dealt with
00:40:26this is going to come back in
00:40:29looking for Hoylett to put
00:40:31a little bit of quality and I haven't really
00:40:33been impressed with his corners but
00:40:35let's see if he can get it on the money here
00:40:47swinger from Hoylett
00:40:49the goalkeeper came off the ball
00:40:55and somehow
00:40:59the ball has been kept out of the net
00:41:05well it's Hutchinson
00:41:07and that ball comes down and I thought
00:41:09that was over the line
00:41:11I know all this equipment is there
00:41:13to tell us that it wasn't but how close
00:41:15was that
00:41:17goodness me
00:41:19there we've got a better picture of it looks like it just about
00:41:21stayed out
00:41:23Johnston's coming in as well and he can't get over the ball
00:41:25Hoylett puts a
00:41:27wonderful pass in there
00:41:29what a finish to his career that
00:41:31would have been
00:41:35would have been a fairy
00:41:37tail end for Atiba
00:41:39Hutchinson it looked like the ball
00:41:41well some had gone over the line
00:41:43but not all
00:41:45goal line technology
00:41:47probably the best initiative we have
00:41:49at the end of the day
00:41:52what a let off
00:41:54for Morocco
00:41:58it certainly was
00:42:00as I say I think Canada with their shape
00:42:02now has far better looked like a team now
00:42:08not home and hosed yet Morocco
00:42:22just a point needed to confirm their place
00:42:24in the last 16
00:42:26could still all turn around
00:42:34Strolls through that first half
00:42:36Ziyech
00:42:38a little bit too much on that
00:42:40for Aboukal
00:42:52that's how close it was
00:43:02Hoylett
00:43:04now that is a good switch
00:43:08Lariat
00:43:10corner kick
00:43:16a bit more belief
00:43:18in this Canada side suddenly
00:43:22now
00:43:42Sturdy header away
00:43:44Selim Amalat
00:43:46Davies
00:43:48finds Lariat
00:43:52Amrabat there to
00:43:54clear up
00:43:56he has but he has given a corner away
00:44:00how many times have we seen him do this
00:44:04he is filling in behind those full backs
00:44:08might regret giving this out for a corner
00:44:11might regret giving this out for a corner
00:44:17it's out swingers from the boot of Junior Hoylett
00:44:21close the real threat
00:44:25comes again
00:44:27Endaziri this time
00:44:29the clearance at the near post
00:44:37Canada pushing Hutchinson
00:44:40finds Johnston
00:44:46Buchanan dispossessed
00:44:48Amrabat
00:44:52giving it away there
00:44:54but Amrabat the way that he sees danger
00:44:56he just goes straight after Buchanan there
00:44:58I've seen him running too often
00:45:00I'm going to go after him
00:45:04showing that corner he gave away again
00:45:10another change
00:45:12for Canada
00:45:14Junior Hoylett off
00:45:22David Wotherspoon
00:45:24his World Cup debut
00:45:34Mikim Ziyech
00:45:36off for Morocco
00:45:38and Unahi
00:45:42El-Yamek and
00:45:46Hamdallah
00:45:48in their place
00:45:58I think that's sensible isn't it
00:46:00get those quality players off
00:46:02rest them up for the rest of the competition
00:46:05it's been a very different second half for Morocco
00:46:07it has
00:46:09and I think it's been dictated to by Canada
00:46:11and I think you know
00:46:13when you come to a tournament you can't just conduct
00:46:15an experiment actually in the competition
00:46:17I think I would have thought that the manager
00:46:19would have sort of had tried and trusted ways he wanted
00:46:21to play before we got to this stage but
00:46:23in this shape I really like the way they play
00:46:25here look how many players are forward
00:46:27in this Canada side right now
00:46:29three at the back this guy as well
00:46:31Kone should have probably have started the tournament
00:46:3345 minutes into the game against Croatia
00:46:39I think there's a lot of talent here
00:46:41at the managers disposal
00:46:53well the hope will be that they will be better for this
00:46:55experience
00:46:57expectations will be high
00:46:59the next World Cup they don't want to go the way
00:47:02of our current hosts
00:47:08if Canada score it could be a very interesting end
00:47:10to this match
00:47:14indeed Morocco looking over their
00:47:16shoulders and
00:47:18looking at the other score line although a draw will do
00:47:23is Mel Kone
00:47:32Miller
00:47:34Wotherspoon
00:47:36kept in by
00:47:38Tejan Buchanan
00:47:44nothing doing for the referee
00:47:48Buchanan's angry because a little bit of a tug on him there
00:47:50look Amrabat
00:47:52not maybe enough
00:47:54but it makes him second best for that
00:47:56challenge

00:48:56David dropping deep
00:48:58here's Johnstone
00:49:00This could be the breakaway for Morocco, Amrabat.
00:49:13Still a little bit to do, Aboukar is over on the left.
00:49:17He should have given him. He was being greedy there, wasn't he?
00:49:21He's going end to end now this match.
00:49:25Davis skipping away from Saïd.
00:49:31Again helping out his teammate, Hakimi.
00:49:43Looking good, Hakimi, tonight, isn't he?
00:49:45As good of any fullback I've seen in this competition.
00:49:48Amrabat decides, doesn't he, I'm just going to break forward.
00:49:52You think here, why he comes back, I don't really know.
00:49:55And then there's a run on the left-hand side for him,
00:49:57and he doesn't, he just runs down a blind alley in the end.
00:50:02Trying to get it out of his feet to hit it, and loses it.
00:50:07And his hand down it, with the opportunity.
00:50:12And too many touches, you see it.
00:50:27I can't emphasize enough, really, there's really good solid defending here.
00:50:44That box back four just love defending.
00:50:47Never really go far away from one another.
00:50:58Rothko sitting very deep now.
00:51:01Davis to David.
00:51:05Robberspoon.
00:51:08Lovely feint towards the back post.
00:51:10Out for a corner.
00:51:13Look at that commitment again.
00:51:16As a defender watching that ball all the way onto his head.
00:51:20Just flicks it out of harm's way.
00:51:23Poilers off the field, so Alphonso Davis will take the corner.
00:51:39Canada's fifth of the game.
00:51:41Davis.
00:51:43Johnston flicks it on, and out of play.
00:51:46Just gets too much on that, just wants the slightest of touches.
00:51:50Johnston.
00:52:10As it stands, Rothko going through as group winners.
00:52:34Drawn their opening game.
00:52:36Impressive win against Belgium.
00:52:41They are being put under some pressure here by the Canadians.
00:52:57They've become a back five now, haven't they, Rothko?
00:53:00To try and deal with these attacks.
00:53:07A little bit too aggressive that from Buchanan.
00:53:11On Jamal El-Yamik.
00:53:16And he's gone in there as an extra central defender, Yamik.
00:53:34Much less comfortable.
00:53:37In the second half for Rothko.
00:53:41Mandela down.
00:53:47Holding his face.
00:53:49Yellow card for Vittoria.
00:54:03We don't see much complaint from him.
00:54:05He knows, doesn't he, what he's done.
00:54:11Another change.
00:54:14For Morocco coming up.
00:54:18First minutes of the tournament for Yaya Djibran.
00:54:26Ashraf Hakimi.
00:54:28Coming off.
00:54:32Rafim in Cottonwall, I think.
00:54:34Hakimi does really well on that right hand side.
00:54:41The revival player in their knockout stage game.
00:54:59A few players really playing at the absolute top level.
00:55:03Ashraf Hakimi.
00:55:11Set piece well defended by Hutchinson.
00:55:22Aboukal.
00:55:27Telegraphs the cross.
00:55:34It's the final five minutes.
00:55:36Just lacking that quality on the Canada.
00:55:39They just need to make balls into midfield and then try almost
00:55:42like a ladder, isn't it?
00:55:44Try to climb through the pitch.
00:55:46Doesn't seem to be there.
00:55:48They don't seem to have the sort of confidence that they need.
00:55:52It's a chance for Canada to play.
00:55:54It's a chance for Canada to play.
00:55:56And it's a chance for Canada to play.
00:55:58It's a chance for Canada to play.
00:56:00It's a chance for Canada to play.
00:56:02It's a chance for Canada to play.
00:56:03Doesn't seem to be there.
00:56:05They don't seem to have the sort of know-how.
00:56:07The patterns of movement.
00:56:09To unlock those doors through the pitch.
00:56:16They've got the talent.
00:56:18Just need to find the right way of playing.
00:56:29Marriott.
00:56:30win the free kick.
00:56:37Points forward, oh and the goalkeeper!
00:56:40Wow, unorthodox.
00:56:43Not sure what happened in his mind in that moment.
00:56:47Well he's outside the box and he knows he's got to chest it back in
00:56:51and then catch it.
00:56:53He almost gets it in the wrong order.
00:57:00Hutchinson.
00:57:11Let's not forget, millimetres away from scoring the equaliser.
00:57:17Well the goal and technology cleared that up.
00:57:21Haven't seen him much really from Canada since then really.
00:57:26I think Morocco have just decided let's just get back behind the ball
00:57:29and sit on the edge of our own box.
00:57:35Quite happy just to hack it away.
00:57:40It's going to be difficult to find a way through.
00:57:46Iliamic with the header away.
00:57:49Naziri.
00:57:51Bundled off the ball.
00:57:54Buchanan again, he just loses his head a little bit.
00:57:58I think he's not a bad player but just his discipline at times.
00:58:05No prizes for what that means, the Morocco coach.
00:58:15Taking his time over this, as instructed.
00:58:24Header one.
00:58:31Amalar.
00:58:41The referee's pulled it back and Wotherspoon's frustrated because
00:58:44Canada had possession of the ball and could have played an advantage.
00:58:48Loose touch from Johnston but it's won back.
00:58:57Don't keep it for long but it's Jonathan David.
00:59:02Lariat.
00:59:06Closed down by Alphonso Davies.
00:59:11And Naziri.
00:59:15Try and chase.
00:59:33David collects.
00:59:37Fouled by Hamdallah.
00:59:41They're good at this, aren't they, Morocco, just slowing the game down.
00:59:45Canada just can't get it to their star players.
00:59:49Davies has played Virsi everywhere on this pitch tonight.
00:59:53Wherever he goes, the ball goes elsewhere.
00:59:58Into four minutes of time added up.
01:00:01Got to get this ball wide and get it into the box.
01:00:05The eardrum's about to explode.
01:00:08Goes inside.
01:00:11Alfamama Stadium.
01:00:14David there, he's just standing watching that ball, it's unbelievable.
01:00:20It's going to take something very special
01:00:23or a big mistake for them to break down.
01:00:26It's hard to see it coming because they're so compact, Morocco.
01:00:30They could just do this all night, they could be here till midnight
01:00:33and they wouldn't score, but let's see.
01:00:39Larry trying to wriggle away, he may have just done so.
01:00:42Pulls it back, Jonathan David, closed down immediately.
01:00:49They've shown they've got many sides to their game, Morocco
01:00:53and they will be a test for whoever they face in the next stage.
01:00:56They're resolute, that's for sure.
01:00:59It's hard to break through them.
01:01:02Buchanan.
01:01:05Davis on the overlap.
01:01:09Corner kick.
01:01:17I think the goalkeeper's even going to go up for this one.
01:01:20Here we go, are we set for a Hollywood ending?
01:01:25Milan-Borjan.
01:01:28In the mix.
01:01:36Tired corner.
01:01:39Alphonso Davis.
01:01:42Simply wasn't good enough.
01:01:45Here we go.
01:01:48Here's Borjan, that's a better delivery.
01:01:51He puts up his goal.
01:01:54Swing and a miss.
01:01:57Away from the goalkeeper.
01:02:00But Alphonso Davis clears up.
01:02:04Borjan's relieved, isn't he, and I'm relieved for him.
01:02:07Fresh air shot that, wasn't it?
01:02:10He just swung at it. Goodness me.
01:02:13Game's been stopped.
01:02:16Much didn't show his outfield credentials there.
01:02:19You can see why he's a goalie.
01:02:22We're here for it, though.
01:02:25Terrific entertainment.
01:02:34That's great heading.
01:02:37Look at this.
01:02:40He gets up and wins it.
01:02:43Wants it more than anyone else.
01:02:46That's about desire.
01:02:49Atmosphere's on rail again, isn't it?
01:02:52The Moroccan fans know it.
01:02:55They're going to do something they haven't done since it was at 86.
01:02:58I think they won the group then as well.
01:03:01Celebrations have started.
01:03:04The bench is bouncing.
01:03:07They want the whistle blown.
01:03:10We're not going to hear it.
01:03:13David.
01:03:16Here's Johnston.
01:03:19Kovacic.
01:03:22Kovacic.
01:03:25Here's Johnston.
01:03:28Kone delivers.
01:03:34Buchanan.
01:03:37Heavy touch. Amrabat.
01:03:40They're nearly there.
01:03:43What a ball that is.
01:03:46Can't be finished off. Handala.
01:03:49That's the goalkeeper grab.
01:03:52It's all over.
01:03:56Pure jubilation.
01:04:01The Atlas Lions make history.
01:04:06The spirit of 1986 alive and well.
01:04:11Into the last 16.
01:04:15Only the second time in their history.
01:04:23Canada, six straight defeats in the World Cup.
01:04:28But they finished
01:04:31with another goal and at least
01:04:34a little bit of pride.
01:04:37Full-time, Canada 1, Morocco 2.
01:04:43Incredible scenes here.
01:04:46The Tunisian fans, sorry, the Moroccan fans.
01:04:49I did 2-2 yesterday.
01:04:52Those fans were going wild.
01:04:55Moroccan fans are going absolutely wild here.
01:04:58The scenes are just brilliant.
01:05:01The Canadian players were on their knees.
01:05:04They were desperate to take something home from this World Cup.
01:05:07More than just a couple of goals.
01:05:10They are joint hosts in four years' time.
01:05:13Morocco are top and out of the group.
01:05:16The last 16 for the first time since 1986.
01:05:19It's brilliant. You can see the scenes.
01:05:22You can see how much it means to them.
01:05:25That's getting out of the group stage in a World Cup.
01:05:28They topped it and they were worthy of it.
01:05:31They played really well.
01:05:34These fans are going nuts behind us.
01:05:37It's so loud we can hear it in the studio.
01:05:40That's the beauty of football.
01:05:43We saw that Canada did play even higher.
01:05:46Pushing Morocco to defend even deeper.
01:05:49Morocco was still focused.
01:05:52Well organised and really patient.
01:05:55In the end, they just deserved this win.
01:05:58Look at that.
01:06:01What it means to them.
01:06:04You have enjoyed their calmness.
01:06:07You have enjoyed their defensive strength in this tournament.
01:06:10It's paid off.
01:06:13A new generation of Moroccan players.
01:06:16Who are going to enjoy this World Cup journey.
01:06:19For at least one game more.
01:06:22We are going to this World Cup and we are able to beat anyone.
01:06:25When we put in 100%
01:06:28we are able to do it.
01:06:31It's true that in the beginning of the World Cup
01:06:34no one could think that Morocco would finish first.
01:06:37Everyone was thinking about Croatia, Belgium.
01:06:40But Morocco came with this mentality of saying
01:06:43we are ready for this World Cup.
01:06:46They are the second side through to the last 16 after Senegal.
01:06:49Who will play England in the last 16.
01:06:52We don't know who Morocco will play yet but they are top of the group.
01:06:55That is the way Group F finishes.
01:06:58Canada still to get a World Cup win.
01:07:01Belgium end on 4 points with just that win against Canada.
01:07:04And of course the draw today against Croatia.
01:07:07Which finished goalless.
01:07:10That is an interesting group to be played later tonight.
01:07:13And potentially Croatia could end up playing Spain
01:07:16in the last 16.
01:07:19You would fancy Spain perhaps to finish top.
01:07:22But anything can happen as we know.
01:07:25I don't think many people would have had Morocco finish top of Group F.
01:07:28I think that Morocco won't care.
01:07:32They will watch the game.
01:07:35They have played in this World Cup so far fearless.
01:07:38Organised. Going at teams.
01:07:41I don't think they will be that interested.
01:07:44Or there won't be no nerves.
01:07:47Or they won't be scared of whoever it is they come up against.
01:07:50Because they have been so good and they are enjoying it.
01:07:53And now they have got momentum.
01:07:56And momentum is a big thing in football.
01:07:59When you look at these pictures it means so much.
01:08:02And you keep that going.
01:08:05And you start feeling like you can take the world on.
01:08:08It doesn't matter who you are playing against.
01:08:11These have been brilliant tonight as well.
01:08:14Giving them energy in that second half when they needed it.
01:08:17I like this.
01:08:20Sometimes some people say there is another game to be played in a few days.
01:08:23And you stay focused. Enjoy yourself.
01:08:26Go and appreciate your fans who have made this journey here.
01:08:29It is a few hours on a plane to Morocco.
01:08:32But it is a lot longer to Canada.
01:08:35And their fans have seen them come through this World Cup.
01:08:38With their much sought after goal.
01:08:41But unfortunately for them still no win, no points.
01:08:44And a lot of work to do over the next four years.
01:08:47But it is going to be a matter of days before these guys go again.
01:08:50In the last 16. 1986.
01:08:54It is such a long time for them to have not gone out of a group.
01:08:57And obviously with players like Ziyech performing as he did today.
01:09:00And the cohesion of this team and the defence as well.
01:09:03It is going to be a great few days for those fans.
01:09:06Extending their stay here.
01:09:09And enjoying and adding so much colour and noise.
01:09:12And the atmosphere has been great.
01:09:15I have really enjoyed it.
01:09:18It was another good game of football.
01:09:22And as I say they drove them on.
01:09:25But what a good team we have seen as well in Morocco.
01:09:28All the stuff we mentioned before.
01:09:31The organisation, the discipline.
01:09:34They are well drilled and they know exactly what they are doing.
01:09:37And then they have a little bit of magic with Ziyech.
01:09:40And El-Naziri and good players.
01:09:43They are a good team.
01:09:46Maybe before we underestimated them a little bit.
01:09:49But now they are here and they are showing the world what they are all about.
01:09:52The only thing they have lost today is their clean sheet record.
01:09:55And then almost a second.
01:09:58Just half a ball over the line.
01:10:01Let's have a look at how Canada almost got their point.
01:10:04Towards the end of the match here.
01:10:10We all think this is a goal.
01:10:13But no.
01:10:16Right inside the entire ball has to be inside the goal.
01:10:19So this is the rule that every referee knows.
01:10:22But for some people watching the game they thought it was a goal.
01:10:25Say some people. I was screaming.
01:10:28I was quite desperate for Canada to get their goal there.
01:10:31But obviously clearly only half the ball.
01:10:34Sadly for them.
01:10:37Them's the fine margins.
01:10:40That's what it is.
01:10:43They didn't get his World Cup goal and that's probably his last World Cup as well.
01:10:46So that would have been nice for him.
01:10:49But that's football. Sometimes it doesn't happen.
01:10:52And to be fair over the course of the 90 minutes.
01:10:55I don't think they did enough to really get anything out of the game anyway.
01:10:58There is a player we are going to have a closer look at.
01:11:01Who really did help the defence.
01:11:04Because he sits in front of the defence. Organises.
01:11:07A lot of stuff came through him.
01:11:10He's a world class player.
01:11:13He's going to move to one of the big clubs after this tournament.
01:11:16With the performance you've seen today. You wouldn't bet against that.
01:11:19No. Not at all. I think he was excellent.
01:11:22In a time where Canada did have a better second half.
01:11:25And try and get up the pitch a little bit higher.
01:11:28And all he did was disciplined and put fires out.
01:11:31Which is so important when a team is pushing.
01:11:34And you can keep that centre of the pitch.
01:11:38You can keep that tight.
01:11:41You see how early he's reading things.
01:11:44As a centre back it's so nice when you've got a defensive midfield player like that.
01:11:47This one he reads early. Just sniffs out the danger.
01:11:50But you know what it's like when you have someone there in front of you.
01:11:53That you can trust to do stuff like this.
01:11:56Exactly. He's been like a guide during the entire competition.
01:11:59He's setting the tone for the team. Because he has so much energy.
01:12:02He was really aggressive. You could see.
01:12:05He's not falling on the ground. He's staying, staying, staying.
01:12:08And you can see he's into the zone.
01:12:11For him I can feel he's so into the game.
01:12:14Nothing can disrupt him.
01:12:17And he's been even pushing forward. He's not just defending.
01:12:20He's making the difference.
01:12:23We've been chatting about what France are lacking.
01:12:26And it's an Amrabat type player at the moment.
01:12:29Perhaps that's what France need in this World Cup to go forward.
01:12:33I think successful teams, as we said before,
01:12:36they need to be able to know how to manage games, win games.
01:12:39Keep clean sheets.
01:12:42They need something a little bit special up top.
01:12:45But you need someone like that as well. Someone that's going to do all the dirty work.
01:12:48That maybe gets overlooked because of Zh scores and stuff like that.
01:12:51But if he's not there today.
01:12:54Maybe Canada get through and get something out of the game.
01:12:57Especially that type of holding midfield player.
01:13:00That can sniff danger out earlier.
01:13:03The celebrations go on and on.
01:13:06Here at the Althouma Stadium.
01:13:09And you can see there the manager, Reg Ragi.
01:13:12Who has only been in the job since August.
01:13:15Making history for Morocco.
01:13:18Making history for these players.
01:13:21That all smacks of great.
01:13:24You recognise that kind of atmosphere, I'm sure, from your experience in Wales.
01:13:27That's why I say you should enjoy it.
01:13:30I remember when we were in the Euros in 2016.
01:13:33We enjoyed it.
01:13:36You might only have one game left.
01:13:39You'll refocus and you'll go again.
01:13:42But if you've worked so hard to qualify for a World Cup.
01:13:45And then you've topped the group.
01:13:48The manager's got to get thrown up in the air.
01:13:51Why wouldn't you?
01:13:54They enjoy their evening and then refocus tomorrow and try and win the next game.
01:13:57But when you've just played 90 minutes and you've played these three games and worked hard.
01:14:00I think anyway you should have scenes like that.
01:14:03And for your fans.
01:14:06The fans haven't moved.
01:14:09They want to see those kind of scenes.
01:14:12And have that relationship between the team and their fan base.
01:14:15It goes a long way, doesn't it?
01:14:18Let's get some reaction from Canada.
01:14:21This is the first time we've seen Canada play in this tournament.
01:14:2439 years old, Atiba Hutchinson.
01:14:27Atiba, take us through your chance.
01:14:30How close were you?
01:14:33How close was Canada to tying?
01:14:36And how hard is it to leave this World Cup without that point?
01:14:39On the chance, it was a very good ball in.
01:14:42I just tried to get my head on it and keep it down.
01:14:45But it wasn't enough.
01:14:48It wasn't enough today.
01:14:51We tried our best.
01:14:54We gave everything we have inside of us.
01:14:57We wanted to fight for ourselves and get something out of this tournament.
01:15:00To get the first points on the board for this country.
01:15:03Unfortunately, we didn't get it today.
01:15:06So we're very upset.
01:15:09We're disappointed at that.
01:15:12But of course, it's our first time in a very long time.
01:15:15Apart from not getting the points.
01:15:18Canada leaves with three losses.
01:15:21However, this might be an end to this tournament.
01:15:24But does it feel like a beginning?
01:15:27For sure.
01:15:30It was a way for us to come here and show the world what we're made of.
01:15:33Show the world that we can play football and play with the best of them.
01:15:36I said it before, we'll learn from these games.
01:15:39They're difficult games.
01:15:42But it is a start of a new beginning for us.
01:15:45We'll continue to work and prepare like we always do.
01:15:48Four years from now, we'll be ready to do some more.
01:15:51And make some more noise.
01:15:54John, after a rough start, your team fought back.
01:15:57In its World Cup education, what did they learn about themselves today?
01:16:00That they were two inches away from scoring the first goal.
01:16:03The first points for Canada.
01:16:06I think everyone thought that ball was going to cross the line.
01:16:10We were willing it, but it didn't.
01:16:13You see that resilience, you see our quality.
01:16:16This is a Moroccan team that's just won the group.
01:16:19And I thought we showed that spirit.
01:16:22That Canadian grit that we came here to show.
01:16:25And it times our quality.
01:16:28Canada leaves with three losses. Is that a disappointment?
01:16:31Or are you disappointed?
01:16:34I'm proud of what these lads have shown here.
01:16:37I knew I was going to walk away from this and it's going to sting.
01:16:40But there isn't a game that we're not proud of.
01:16:43I think we competed in every match here.
01:16:46It's the first time we've been here since 36 years.
01:16:49There's a quality of gap at all levels.
01:16:52And we're trying to close that. That's what we'll be doing.
01:16:55And that's where we'll go.
01:16:58We'll keep learning as an organisation, as a coach and as a player group.
01:17:01And we'll be back stronger. We've got four years to build.
01:17:04This is our first step into the big unknown.
01:17:07And we found a lot of things out.
01:17:10And this team has got quality. We can compete.
01:17:13And we were close.
01:17:16Thank you, John.
01:17:19It's emotional for Canada, isn't it?
01:17:22Because there's a lot of unity in that group with the manager.
01:17:25They really believe in him.
01:17:28They've said he's the difference to the team that weren't qualifying before.
01:17:31And it is an enormous step up for them.
01:17:34We said at half-time, they're just not getting enough matches.
01:17:37We're not getting enough matches against other oppositions.
01:17:40All those learnings and pushing over the next four years is the goal.
01:17:43Would you perhaps keep him in charge as well?
01:17:46Because of that continuum effect?
01:17:49It reminds me of women's football in France.
01:17:52We didn't used to be on top
01:17:55and in the biggest stage of women's football.
01:17:58We were participating to a big competition
01:18:01but didn't have the experience.
01:18:04And I could feel Canada starting from the competition with a lot of energy.
01:18:07But then you see, they are missing more experience.
01:18:10Even if they have Davies, but today we know that Canada is not just about Davies.
01:18:13There's Buchanan.
01:18:16And there's young players who have technique.
01:18:19It's not soccer. It's football.
01:18:22And they will be working toward improving.
01:18:25And I'm sure we will see more players coming in Europe,
01:18:28gaining the confidence and continuing to improve their level.
01:18:31We'll pause things on this match here for just a moment
01:18:34because in the other game in Group F, of course, Belgium needed a win
01:18:37to stand any chance of reaching the last 16.
01:18:40Here are the key moments from their game against Croatia.
01:18:56Croatia straight away!
01:18:58With an effort inside.
01:19:0010 seconds from Perisic.
01:19:06Claudio joining in.
01:19:08Kovacic!
01:19:10Courtois required.
01:19:12That's better from Croatia.
01:19:14You can see what Kovacic is trying to do.
01:19:17A little bit of space for De Bruyne.
01:19:19That's a good ball. Carrasco.
01:19:21Still Carrasco.
01:19:24And then Lukaku!
01:19:26He and everyone connected with this nation cannot believe that hasn't gone in.
01:19:33Hazard into De Bruyne.
01:19:35Can he get there?
01:19:37Oh, the goalkeeper made a miss, and he's done it again.
01:19:40Open goal.
01:19:41Ball does go out, but the header is poor.
01:19:44As long as Croatia don't concede, they're through.
01:19:47Belgium need to score to get through.
01:19:50In from Castagna.
01:19:53Munier, Lukaku!
01:19:55He doesn't know much about this one.
01:19:57He's just trying to flick it to the outside of his left foot.
01:20:04It rebounded to him. It's still Doku.
01:20:08Torgan Hazard, force wide.
01:20:10The goalkeeper didn't get there. Lukaku!
01:20:13And Leverkovic prevents it going over the line.
01:20:16He's not expecting it.
01:20:19And there's the full-time whistle.
01:20:23The golden generation of Belgium has lost its sparkle.
01:20:27They are dusting down the passports and going home.
01:20:34Yes, some huge players in that team going home,
01:20:38and that is the frustration.
01:20:40Romelu Lukaku showing his frustration there
01:20:43that I'm sure permeates through that whole squad,
01:20:47and there have been stories leaking out of discord
01:20:50amongst the players.
01:20:52Is it a matter of being just past your best?
01:20:55What do you put this drop from being third in the world
01:20:58four years ago to not getting out of the group?
01:21:01I would say it's the expectation of others.
01:21:04You are one of the leaders in the world,
01:21:07maybe the second or third in the world,
01:21:09and everybody is expecting to play at your best.
01:21:12You have this type of pressure,
01:21:14consciously or unconsciously,
01:21:16everybody is expecting you.
01:21:18But you feel like you're getting old,
01:21:20players are not in shape,
01:21:22and so you're not in the best condition to play your best,
01:21:25and everybody is expecting you.
01:21:27Yes, they'll be disappointed
01:21:29because they've got some of the best players in the world
01:21:32still now in that team.
01:21:34I know they're going through a bit of a change.
01:21:37There are some older players in there,
01:21:39but the team is fully loaded with good players.
01:21:44There are so many chances.
01:21:46Unlucky Rom today not to score.
01:21:49I don't know.
01:21:51That's going to be a big blow for them
01:21:53because they're a big team.
01:21:55To go home, they would have probably come into it
01:21:58thinking they would top the group.
01:22:00It's disappointing, but for Croatia,
01:22:02they're a good team.
01:22:04They're a wildly odd team and very clever,
01:22:06and they wear you down.
01:22:08It'll be interesting to see what happens with that.
01:22:10But for Belgium...
01:22:13It's only the second time ever that multiple African teams
01:22:16have made it through to the knockout stages.
01:22:182014, the last time Algeria and Nigeria,
01:22:20and tomorrow, of course, Ghana,
01:22:22will give it a go as well.
01:22:24Just a quick one for you.
01:22:26Bono was born in 1991,
01:22:28the same year U2 released Achung Baby.
01:22:30If the results fall, that Germany finish second,
01:22:32then they're going to face Morocco in the last 16,
01:22:34as they did in 1986.
01:22:36Boom. Wow. Guys, thank you so, so much.
01:22:38Enjoyed your company today for Bono and Morocco.
01:22:40Well, it's been a beautiful day, hasn't it?
01:22:42From all of us, goodbye.
01:23:11The Atlas Lions make history
01:23:14into the last 16.
