00:00Really a sobering moment, a harrowing moment that we saw over the weekend that transcends politics.
00:06Former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt at a political rally on Saturday.
00:12When you saw the news, when you saw the video, what's your reaction?
00:16I mean, I was pretty shocked. I had heard about it first before I saw the video.
00:21We were not watching any television or anything at the time.
00:25But then we pulled it up immediately and yeah, it's surreal.
00:29You know, the shot that was that close.
00:32I think it's pretty hard to believe that someone was able to get that clean of a shot at the president at a rally.
00:43And the fact that he missed, you know, thank God.
00:48But it's it was deeply disturbing at a variety of levels.
00:53I've talked to your colleagues earlier today and they all said the same sentiment of, you know,
01:00God was there because a miracle happened. It was so close.
01:04But you bring up a question. It is hard to believe that someone was able to get that type of shot.
01:09What questions do you have for the Secret Service here?
01:13Yeah, I'm on the Judiciary Committee and the Homeland Security Committee.
01:17And I assume I heard the speaker say he wanted to do a congressional investigation on that.
01:24I'm certainly on board with that effort.
01:26I think we need to make sure that we figure out exactly what went wrong on that on that day
01:34and make sure that it's not something that will be replicated in the future for sure.
01:40And in addition, we've got, you know, the Republican and the Democratic conventions.
01:46Republicans have already started there.
01:48So we need to make sure that we redouble the efforts to make sure that those are secure.
01:54And then the protection of individual members.
01:57I mean, we you know, we know that Gabby Giffords was shot.
02:00Steve Scalise has been shot. Other members of Congress.
02:04There have been attempts, you know, Gretchen Whitmer.
02:06There was an attempt to, I think, abduct her and perhaps harm her as well a few years ago that was thwarted.
02:12So, you know, we know that these threats are out there and that, you know, there's these are angry times here in the United States.
02:19We need to try and make sure we do everything we can to de-escalate that
02:24and try and get back to a more civilized approach to political disagreement.
02:31We're going to have differences, but we can disagree without being disagreeable.
