00:00OK, now we're going to go to the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour.
00:06Really nice place to go on a hot day to cool off in the coal mines.
00:30Just look for this building to get your tickets.
00:33At the time this video was edited, adults 13 to 64 were $10, seniors 65 and over $9.50,
00:43military $9, children 3 to 12 $7.50, and kids under 3 were free.
00:52There are group rates of 20 or more people, but you do have to call ahead to get those
00:58reservations.
00:59And parking is free.
01:02And they do have handicapped and motor coach parking.
01:06While you're waiting for your underground carriage, I highly suggest you go into the
01:11museum which is located to the left of the hoist house.
01:17This small but mighty little museum does go over a lot of information about the Lackawanna
01:24Coal Mine and coal mines in general.
01:27Definitely worth a stop.
01:34When it's time for your tour, you go to the mine car loading platform, and you'll see
01:40your ride.
01:45It's a little bit cramped, as you can see.
02:09A little bumpy on the way down.
02:23And you do have some dark travel time, so be prepared for that.
02:27And also be prepared at the bottom where they stop and give a little toot.
02:42You are then instructed to disembark, walk a short distance, and then their tour begins.
02:50And we had a wonderful tour guide, by the way.
03:07There is a lot to learn and see and do.
03:10And I'm going to have my new friend tell you a little bit about it.
03:16Originally opened in 1860, the coal mine tour takes you through the winding underground
03:21gangways and rock tunnel, past three different veins of hard coal, the mule boy, the nipper,
03:27the monkey vein, and the dead chute.
03:29Each tour group is led by a miner, who, while walking you through the tour, explains the
03:34fascinating methods used and the heroic efforts involved in deep mining's history.
03:39While on the tour, you travel 300 feet beneath the earth's surface and experience this national
03:45award winning historical attraction called the Lackawanna County Coal Mine Tour.
03:50The once abandoned and now restored hard coal mine is a cool 53 degrees year round and provides
03:55you the opportunity to see a day in the life of the area's workers that powered the industrial
04:00revolution.
04:01A definite must see with your own eyes.
04:16The 300 feet descent down the slope takes three to four minutes, while the walking portion
04:21is approximately a half mile and lasts approximately one hour.
04:26Comfortable shoes and clothing are recommended, and light jackets are available to rent for
04:31anyone who does not bring his or her own.
04:34The mine is handicapped accessible with some restrictions.
04:37A handout is also available for the hearing impaired who are not accompanied by an interpreter.
04:43Please contact the tour office for specific limitations on accessibility.
04:49That was a lot of awesome information.
04:51Thank you very much.
04:53And now we're going to see a little bit more, so you know what to expect when you come to
05:00visit.
06:00After we pick up our token miner certificate, we are ushered back into the coal mine car
06:14for the 300 foot ascent back to the light.
06:20But it's not over yet.
06:29As we're traveling, just so you know, the coal mine tour is usually open from April
06:36to November, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, at least at the time we did the tour.
06:43And it was open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
06:46However, the last tour begins at 2 45 and you must arrive by 2 p.m. in order to buy
06:53your tickets.
07:00Hey, well, look at that.
07:18We made it.
07:20And then we just had to wait for our tour guide to be kind enough to set us free.
07:27Thank you, sir.
07:32What do you think of it, Elias?
07:34Do you like it?
07:35Yeah.
07:36Now, outside, don't forget to tour the grounds.
07:40There's plenty of other things to see.
07:47Oh, and also, there's a really neat penning machine.
07:59So if you're into that, there you go.
08:06Well, we all had fun and I think you will too.
08:11And as always, have a great day.
