The new government has pledged to renationalise the railways. Do you think this is a positive move? How would you rate the current state of services and prices, and do you believe this change will lead to improvements? And what needs to be done to improve services - more trains, extra carriages, new stations and routes

00:00I think the railways are in a great mess and I think it's long overdue. I think it's a
00:05very good idea, yes.
00:06Could you tell me why you think it's a good idea?
00:10It hasn't worked so far. All the profits have gone into the pockets of the shareholders.
00:18Nothing has been properly invested into the railways. They haven't been modernized. Customers
00:23are paying higher and higher prices, the highest in Europe, and all for a really bad
00:29service. The trains are overcrowded. They don't come on time. In many parts of the country
00:34they don't run at all. They don't pay their drivers. They don't look after their drivers
00:40properly and so on. So I think it's necessary to look at the whole question of the railways
00:47again.
00:48The trains are running much better now. They were awfully not up to time, but now they're
00:53keeping time. I often catch a train to Manchester and now you can get a direct train now and
00:59then.
