देवशयनी/हरिशयनी एकादशी व्रत कथा
सतयुग में मांधाता नामक एक चक्रवर्ती राजा का राज था। उनके राज में प्रजा बेहद सुखी थी। एक बार मांधाता के राज्य में तीन वर्ष तक बारिश नहीं हुई, जिसकी वजह से अकाल पड़ा गया था। हर तरफ त्रासदी का माहौल बन गया था। इस कारण लोग पिंडदान, हवन, यज्ञ कथा और व्रत समेत आदि कार्य करने लगे। प्रजा ने राजा मांधाता को इस बारे में विस्तार से बताया।
राज्य में अकाल को देखकर राजा अधिक चिंतित हुआ। उन्हें लगता था कि उनसे आखिर ऐसा कौन सा पाप हो गया, जिसके कारण इतनी कठोर सजा मिल रही है। इस समस्या से निजात पाने के लिए राजा सेना को लेकर जंगल की ओर चल दिए। इस दौरान वह लोग ब्रह्माजी के पुत्र अंगिरा ऋषि के आश्रम पहुंचे गए। ऋषिवर ने राजा का कुशलक्षेम और जंगल में आने का कारण पूछा।
राजा ने कहा कि मैं पूरी निष्ठा से धर्म का पालन करता हूं। इसके बाद भी राज्य में ऐसा अकाल क्यों पड़ रहा है? आप मेरी इस समस्या का समाधान करें। मांधाता की बात को सुनकर महर्षि अंगिरा ने कहा कि यह सतयुग है। ऐसे में छोटे से पाप का बड़ा दंड का सामना करना पड़ता है। उन्होंने कहा कि आषाढ़ माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी का व्रत करें। इस व्रत को करने से राज्य में बारिश जरूर होगी।
इसके बाद राजा ने एकादशी व्रत को किया। इस व्रत के पुण्य-प्रताप से राज्य में मूसलधार वर्षा हुई। ब्रह्म वैवर्त पुराण में देवशयनी एकादशी के विशेष महत्व का वर्णन किया गया है। देवशयनी एकादशी के व्रत से व्यक्ति की समस्त मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण होती हैं।

00:00Today, we have come with the Padma, i.e. Dev Shaini, Hari Shaini Ekadashi Vrat Katha of the Shukla Paksha of Ashaad Maas.
00:09So, let's start the Dev Shaini Ekadashi Vrat Katha.
00:14Dharmaraj Yudhishthir said,
00:16O Keshav, I have heard the greatness of the Ashaad Krishna Ekadashi Vrat.
00:21Now, kindly tell me, what is the name of Ashaad Shukla Ekadashi,
00:26what is the method of performing this Vrat, and which deity is worshipped?
00:31Shri Krishna said,
00:33O Yudhishthir, I will tell you the story which Brahmaji had told to Naradji.
00:40One day, Naradji asked Brahmaji the same question.
00:43Then, Brahmaji replied,
00:45O Narad, you have asked a very good question for the benefit of the Kalyugi beings.
00:51Because the Ekadashi Vrat is the best of all the Vrats.
00:55With this Vrat, all the sins are destroyed.
00:58And those who do not perform this Vrat, they go to hell.
01:02By performing this Vrat, Lord Vishnu becomes happy.
01:06The name of this Ekadashi is Padma.
01:09Now, I will tell you an ancient story.
01:11You concentrate and listen carefully.
01:15There was a king named Mandhata in the Surya dynasty,
01:19who was a Satyavadi and a great leader.
01:22He used to take care of his subjects like a son.
01:26His subjects were rich and happy.
01:30There was no famine in his kingdom.
01:33One day, it did not rain for three years in the kingdom of that king.
01:37And there was famine.
01:39The subjects became very sad due to the lack of food.
01:42Due to the lack of food, there were no yagyas in the kingdom.
01:46One day, the subjects went to the king and said,
01:49O king! All the subjects are crying out for food.
01:53Because the reason for the creation of the whole world is the rain.
01:57Due to the lack of rain, there is famine.
01:59And due to the famine, the subjects are dying.
02:02So, O king! Do something that will get rid of the suffering of the subjects.
02:07The king Mandhata said,
02:09You are right.
02:11Rain is the cause of famine.
02:14And you are very sad because there is no rain.
02:18I understand your suffering.
02:20Saying this, the king took some soldiers and went towards the forest.
02:25He wandered in the ashram of many sages.
02:28Finally, he reached the ashram of Brahmaji's son Angira.
02:32There, the king got down from the horse and bowed to Angira.
02:36The monk blessed the king and asked him the reason for coming to the ashram.
02:43The king folded his hands and said with humility,
02:46Even after following the religion in every way, there is famine in my kingdom.
02:52The subjects are very sad because of this.
02:55The subjects are suffering because of the effects of the king's sins.
02:58This is what the scriptures have said.
03:00When I rule according to the religion, why is there famine in my kingdom?
03:05I have still not been able to find out the reason for this.
03:09Now I have come to you to solve this doubt.
03:13Kindly remove this doubt of mine.
03:16Also, tell me a way to remove the suffering of the subjects.
03:20Hearing this, the sage said,
03:22O King, this Satya Yuga is the best of all the Yugas.
03:26It includes all the four stages of Dharma.
03:29That is, in this Yuga, Dharma is at its peak.
03:33People worship Brahma.
03:35And only Brahmins have the right to read the Vedas.
03:38Only Brahmins have the right to do penance.
03:41But in your kingdom, a Shudra is doing penance.
03:45Because of this sin, it is not raining in your kingdom.
03:49Therefore, if you want the welfare of the subjects,
03:52then kill that Shudra.
03:54Upon this, the king said,
03:56O King, how can I kill that Shudra who does penance?
04:02Please tell me another way to get rid of this sin.
04:06Then the sage said,
04:07O King, if you want to know other ways, then listen.
04:11Do Vrat of Padma Ekadashi on the auspicious day of Ashadmas.
04:17Due to the effect of Vrat, it will rain in your kingdom,
04:20and the subjects will be happy.
04:22Because this Ekadashi Vrat is the one that gives all the Siddhis,
04:26and destroys all the obstacles.
04:29Do this Ekadashi Vrat with the subjects, servants, and ministers.
04:34Hearing this, the king returned to his kingdom.
04:38And he did the Vrat of Padma Ekadashi on the auspicious day.
04:41Due to the effect of that Vrat, it rained, and the subjects were happy.
04:45Therefore, all humans should do the Ekadashi Vrat of this month.
04:50This Vrat is going to give enjoyment in this world,
04:52and liberation in the next world.
04:55By reading and listening to this story,
04:58all the sins of humans are destroyed.
05:01In this way, the Ekadashi Vrat of Padma Ekadashi was completed.
