00:00Hey, shalom brothers and sisters, welcome back, thank you again for joining me, I appreciate
00:05it.
00:06Today's lesson, I'm going to do an introduction on the book of Colossians and the New Testament.
00:11You know, I think it's important for beginners to know this stuff, what they're reading and
00:15where the, where the, you know, letter came from, things like that.
00:19I'm going to start out now.
00:22Colossians was compiled between 60 and 61 CE, the Common Era.
00:30It's agreed by both the narrative and early witnesses that Paul wrote this book more than
00:35likely while imprisoned in Rome.
00:38So he was, he was imprisoned, you know, twice, he was, but yeah, he was in prison in Rome
00:44and he had all the free time to do whatever he was allowed to have guests, you know, come
00:50in his, not cell, but it was like a house, you know, guarded house or dormitory apartment
00:55or whatever.
00:56Now the background, this epistle is directed to the assembly of Colossus, which was the
01:02Roman province of Asia, which is modern Turkey and about 12 miles from Laodicea, a city of
01:09great commercial significance.
01:12While Colossus was once a major presence, its impact declined by the first century.
01:18The founder of the Colossus assembly was likely, how do you say that name, Epaphias,
01:25a convert of Paul.
01:31In addition to verse 1 to 7 and 4 of 12, he is also mentioned in Philemon chapter 1, verse
01:4023.
01:41He is referred to as Paul's fellow servant and fellow prisoner.
01:46Some scholars claim that he also assisted in the establishment of the assembly in Laodicea.
01:55This epistle focuses on several key teachings, including the origin and pre-existence of
02:01Yeshua the Messiah, remaining true to the original tenets of the faith, avoiding the
02:07traditions of man while both Jewish and Gnostics, overcoming man's sinful nature and living
02:14according to Yeshua's examples and instruction on family relationships.
02:23Two highlights in this book are the origin and person of Yeshua the Messiah and the need
02:29for spiritual circumcision through baptism.
02:34In the first chapter, Paul describes Yeshua as the image of the invisible El and as the
02:39firstborn of every creature.
02:43He also states that by Him were all things created, heaven, earth.
02:47These passages show that prior to the Messiah's earthly birth, He was with the Father Yahweh
02:55and that through Him were all things made.
02:59The second chapter speaks to spiritual circumcision and equates it to baptism into the singular
03:07name of Yeshua the Messiah.
03:10While the New Testament teaches that physical circumcision is no longer necessary for salvation,
03:15Acts 15 and 1 Corinthians 7-19, Galatians 5-6 and 6-15, spiritual circumcision of the
03:31heart through Messiah baptism is still mandated.
03:35So it's not fleshly, physical circumcision, but it's circumcision of the heart, you know,
03:43the heart, the love, you know, stuff like that.
03:46And Colossians, it's a short book or letter or whatever, but it's really good and it's
03:53just as important as the other scriptures or else it wouldn't be in there.
03:57It wouldn't be in there, period.
03:59And I just figured I'd like to share the introductions, like I said before, to newbies, you know,
04:05that are interested in scripture, you know, want a little detail of descriptions of what
04:09the book's about and maybe the date that it was most likely written, stuff like that.
04:16And anyways, that's all I really wanted to say.
04:18I'm sorry it's so short, but that's how it goes.
04:22I thank you again and please keep your eye out for more content and hit that notification
04:28bell.
