00:00French President Emmanuel Macron convened a meeting of his government
00:03here today at the Elysee Palace. That meeting has now wrapped up,
00:06and we saw ministers leaving. All of them remained very tight-lipped
00:10in front of the cameras about how it had gone down.
00:13But we have since heard from participants in the meeting
00:16that Macron was finally going to be accepting the government's resignation,
00:19or will do by the end of today. And that's a week after Prime Minister
00:23Gabriel Attal tendered it, after those snap elections delivered a hung parliament.
00:28These ministers will now be looking to the next chapter,
00:31that is the first session of the National Assembly on Thursday,
00:35and the vote of who will lead, who will be the president of that assembly.
00:39They can now take part in that freely, they weren't allowed to while they were still ministers,
00:42and they'll be looking to get their preferred candidate into place.
00:46They also will be looking to form, build new ties within the assembly
00:50to try and cobble together some sort of majority
00:53with other so-called Republican parties, i.e. not the far left or the far right.
00:58But also trying to distance themselves a little bit from the unpopular President Macron.
01:04However, the outgoing government will be staying on in a sort of caretaker role
01:09until a new team is finally appointed, a process which could take months.
01:14But so in the meantime, they will be taking care of day-to-day affairs
01:18with reduced powers. But with the Paris Olympics around the corner,
01:22it is crucial for them to be at least taking care of things until that new team is appointed.
