00:00Okay, the mic's back up, and it's actually sturdier than it was before.
00:58Okay.
00:59Here we go.
01:00We're back in the freezer.
01:01Okay.
01:33Alright, perfect.
01:38Ooh, that's nice.
01:54I can just fix that another time.
01:56Okay.
02:03Oh.
02:28Alright.
02:30Now, where was I?
02:35Car's old.
03:00Okay.
03:25There we go.
03:26The car's all looking-
03:27Now, I'll give them this, though.
03:29They really capture the 1920s.
03:49Lily, do you use Notepad to write your scripts?
03:51Actually, this is called Aclepad, but it is a text editor.
03:57Okay.
04:28Wait, he does what?
04:31Oh!
04:32You didn't know?
04:57Hang on, I've got to find a decent fucking resolution of this thing.
05:20Bolin stars in a series of films called The Adventures of Nuk-Tuk, Hero of the South,
05:25and he basically just dresses up as, like, a Southern Water Tribe barbarian and swings a club.
05:44You guys missed this?!
05:47It was, like, half of Season 2!
05:55Oh, hang on.
06:25Who protects the icy tundra of Nuk-Tuk?
06:28Battling Northeast out there in the snow.
06:32When Unalaq starts trouble, he'll punch him in the mouth.
06:36He's Nuk-Tuk, the Hero of the South!
06:43Nuk-Tuk starts trouble in Unalaq.
06:45They make Unalaq look like Ming the Merciless.
06:48Oh, yeah, these are also, like, these are also Water Tribe Civil War propaganda films.
07:18This is the gay-coded villain version of Unalaq.
07:37I'm sorry, are you implying Unalaq wasn't already LGBT-coded?
07:48Hmm.
08:04Hang on a second.
08:05Hang on a second.
08:18Every time this man bends, he is absolutely fantastic.
08:32It's too early in the morning for this.
08:36This man is trying to be Darius.
08:49This man is trying to be Darius.
08:50This man was the original Darius.
09:06Mm-mm, hmm.
09:11Hmm.
09:19Yeah, so this man is kind of, yeah, kind of, a little bit.
09:24Unalaq has always been, like, my favorite villain because before Vaatu becomes a plot point, you know, he's...
09:32The whole Civil War stuff is, like, it's kind of go either way.
09:38I mean, automatically, I support independence for the Southern Water Tribe.
09:41But, you know, it's interesting watching Unalaq, it's interesting listening to Unalaq plead his case.
09:52Hmm.
10:01Hmm.
10:22Remember, it turns out he was just a devil worshipper.
10:24Yeah, but I mean, I don't, like I said, I treat pre-beginnings and post-beginnings as two different things.
10:30Pre-beginning season two is actually really good.
10:32Beginnings and onward fucking sucks.
10:38You know, fuck it, I'm pulling up footage of this shit.
10:45I like Unalaq in the same way I like Kreia.
10:48It's like, yeah, you're wrong, but tell me more.
10:54You're wrong and you're insane and you're delusional, but please tell me more.
11:01Unalaq.
11:06Hello, it's the Rhino.
11:07And I'm the Avatar.
11:08I'd pay money to see that.
11:10Korra style.
11:11This festival used to be a solemn time.
11:17Wow, look at all these people that came out to greet us.
11:19Uh, no, they came to greet them.
11:22Them.
11:27The great chief of the Northern Water tribe comes to grace us with his presence.
11:32Hooray.
11:33Just relax, Tomrock.
11:35He'll be gone soon enough.
11:47Whoa, who are the lovely ladies?
11:50That's Eska and Desna, the chief's children.
11:53Desna is a guy.
11:55Oh no, sure, I knew that.
11:57Oh, and which one is Desna?
12:01Good to see you again, Avatar Korra.
12:04Good to see you too.
12:06Tomrock.
12:08Brother.
12:10It's a shame the Southerners have abandoned all connections to the spirits,
12:14even during the most hallowed times.
12:16I've always loved the Glacier Spirits Festival.
12:19It's fun.
12:20This festival used to be a solemn time of fasting and meditation.
12:24Now it's just a chance to watch some rube try to stick an entire arctic hen in his mouth.
12:30Whoa.
12:31Whoa.
12:32Whoa.
12:33Whoa.
12:34Whoa.
12:35Whoa.
12:36Whoa.
12:38Whoa.
12:39Whoa.
12:40So good.
12:41Traditions change.
12:43It's not the end of the world.
12:45Tell that to the sailors who are being attacked by angry spirits in southern waters.
12:50Some traditions have purpose.
12:52Wait.
12:53Spirits are attacking ships?
12:56I'm surprised the Avatar doesn't know about that.
12:59Apparently you haven't been given all the information you need.
13:02It would be my honor to instruct you in the spiritual ways of the Water Tribe.
13:06I wouldn't mind learning about fighting spirits.
13:09Airbending is getting pretty boring.
13:11Tenzin is Korra's instructor.
13:13He can give her all the training she needs.
13:15Oh, that's the exact scene, by the way, I was referencing earlier.
13:19It's like where Korra's father just steps in and overrides her decisions as the Avatar.
13:24So you've said, tribe.
13:26I wouldn't mind learning about fighting spirits.
13:29Airbending is getting pretty boring.
13:31Tenzin is Korra's instructor.
13:33He can give her all the training she needs.
13:35So you've said.
13:40I love that.
13:41So you've said, leaves.
13:54I'm glad you came with me to this meeting.
13:57Varric is one of the richest men in the world, and he can troll assistants.
14:01I'm out of here, dude.
14:02You kid.
14:03Get over here.
14:05Forget that.
14:06Look me in the eye.
14:11This is a wonderful feast in your honor, uncle.
14:13This is nothing.
14:15When this festival was founded, the tribal elders would commune with the spirits.
14:19People would watch the brilliant displays of light as spirits danced in the sky.
14:23Wow.
14:24I've never seen that.
14:25And that is a shame.
14:27Since the Avatar is the bridge between the material world and the spirits.
14:31That is why I want so badly to teach you.
14:34To help you fulfill your destiny.
14:36I thought I had made it clear that Tenzin is teaching her.
14:41Every Avatar before you traveled the world to learn.
14:45It was Tenzin and your father who kept you secluded at the South Pole.
14:49I thought Aang ordered the White Lotus to keep me down here.
14:53We all did what we thought was...
14:55I recognize that voice.
14:57The voice of Unalaq is Adrian Laterelle.
15:01I don't know if I'm pronouncing... I'm butchering that probably.
15:11Best for you.
15:13Who I train with should be my decision, dad.
15:16Not yours.
15:17Or Tenzin's.
15:19Looks like someone's trying to take your place as the Avatar's stick-in-the-mud mentor.
15:24Bumi, don't pick on Tenzin. You know he's always been sensitive.
15:28I'm not sensitive.
15:35As your chief, it is my honor to speak at this festival.
15:38Which was founded to bring our tribes together.
15:41And restore the ancient balance between our world and that of the spirits.
15:46But I am saddened to see what it has become.
15:49A cheap carnival that celebrates greedy and trivial humans.
15:54I fear the time is fast approaching when the North can no longer stand idly by,
15:59while our southern brothers slip into total spiritual decay.
16:03Angry spirits are already attacking ships in your waters.
16:07I only hope we are not too late to change course.
16:15Chief Unalaq, everybody. Always great to have him in town.
16:18Now, let's have some fun with Wacky Wushu's Dancing Otter Band!
16:22Dancing Otter Penguins!
16:29Bond with you.
16:30We have-
16:31Hush!
16:52Got it!
16:55Don't got it!
17:15Korra!
17:22Korra!
17:43Spirit! Why are you angry with us?
17:46What have we done to offend you?
17:53No!
18:20Korra!
18:22No!
18:31Hey, the animation in Season 2 is also really good.
18:52Go in peace.
19:12Go in peace.
19:19Korra!
19:20Are you all right?
19:22How were you able to control that spirit when no one else could?
19:25As your father could tell you, I've spent my life studying the spirits and learning their ways.
19:30All of this knowledge is lost in the South, but I could teach you everything I know.
19:36Chief Unalaq, clearly you are very knowledgeable.
19:39But Korra still has much to learn about airbending,
19:42and I hope that going to the Air Temples will help her connect with the past avatars.
19:48The Air Temples will teach her nothing.
19:50Only I can give her the training she needs to be a complete avatar.
19:55I've told you that will not happen.
19:57Hey! I'm right here!
19:59Anyone want to ask me what I think?
20:01Korra, please.
20:17She's being manipulated by the villain, and like...
20:22Unalaq shouldn't have been a villain.
20:33I think Season 2 should have had no villain.
20:48I had a pretty good point about how sheltered Korra is.
20:51The fact that Unalaq is the one who brings it up and is then a villain
20:54always felt a little bit like a swipe at people who criticized the show for that.
21:03Unalaq was wrongfully a villain about it.
21:05Unalaq, Kuvira, arguably Amon.
21:07Yeah, I mean, look, let's be honest.
21:09Every villain except Zaheer had no business actually being a villain.
21:17Sometimes the mature story has no villain.
21:19Usually the mature story has no villain.
21:22It's usually about something else.
21:24Pretty much solidified Unalaq's point.
21:47Yeah, I mean, like I said, Dark Spirits are harming Southern Water Tribe ships.
21:52Not only is that something the Avatar should be aware of,
21:54that's something that needs to be addressed, and Unalaq knows how to address it.
21:59Everything he says about how the Southern Water Tribe has slowly had its culture
22:04worn away in favor of pursuing profit at all costs is right.
22:10The only problem is that, like...
22:14You know, like I said, when it comes to the whole Civil War stuff,
22:17I am firmly on the Southern Water Tribe side.
22:19Independence is always a good thing.
22:25But, like...
22:27You don't need a villain for that to be the case.
22:50There's also an interesting personal conflict where Korra's, um...
22:55Hang on.
23:03Korra's duty as the Avatar directly conflicts with the fact that she is of the Southern Water Tribe.
23:08When she doesn't get involved...
23:10When she doesn't get involved in the Civil War, when she tries to mediate in between it,
23:15people from the Southern Water Tribe are real fuckin' assholes to her.
23:23It's interesting.
23:26And then beginnings came around and they just threw it all away.
23:32Because, like, the Civil War escalates largely as a result of Tonraq and Unalaq
23:37constantly at each other's fuckin' throats.
23:40With their tribes caught in the middle of it.
23:46One thing I do like.
23:47I do like how Tenzin ultimately accepts Korra's decision.
23:50You'll see it in a sec.
23:51This is probably, like, my favorite Tenzin moment.
24:15That's what I need to learn.
24:18I have to go with him.
24:20Please. I know you're angry.
24:22But we've come so far together.
24:25I'm sorry, Tenzin.
24:28This is as far as we go.
24:34It has been a pleasure serving you, Avatar Korra.
24:46I think you forgot.
24:49This was, like, one of the few times that Korra's writing was actually quite mature
24:53and interesting and complicated.
24:55And it's, like, basically everything people claim they want from animation.
25:04And then beginnings happened and it all went away.
25:07It all got flittered away in the name of the lore.
25:11The lore.
25:16Season 2 is the absolute...
25:20Is my favorite... Season 2 of Korra is my favorite example
25:24of the way the push for lore over storytelling...
25:27Lore over narrative...
25:31Is...
25:32Is what is killing storytelling.
25:36Because the moment they start going into the backstory of the Avatar
25:40and the origins of...
25:42Orange of the Avatar.
25:43The origins of the Avatar...
25:46Is where it utterly fucking dies.
25:54I speak no hyperbole.
25:55Everyone says this is the worst season.
25:57The first half of this season is some of the best...
26:02Is some of the best writing, the best animation.
26:05Just, like, the best work of art I've seen from TV animation.
26:10So speak no hyperbole when I say that.
26:18Lily, we need the magic explain...
26:20Fucking bowl.
26:41Hmm.
26:55I say oranges instead of origins, too, Lily.
26:58It's much more fun to say.
27:00Oh, yeah.
27:01Just...
27:06I say I haven't watched Korra in a while, but that's actually a lie.
27:09I've watched the first...
27:10I've watched, like, the first half of season two every few months.
27:13It's that good.
27:14I love it.
27:16I absolutely adore it.
27:39Come on.
27:45Come on.
27:47Come on.
27:53Come on.
28:01I think that one of the interesting parts is, like,
28:03you see how Udalok basically explains a lot of the traditions of the Water Tribes.
28:09And Korra doesn't know about any of them.
28:11So, like, in another contrast, Korra, like,
28:14whereas Aang is utterly immersed in his own culture
28:17and is the only one still holding on to it,
28:19Korra is completely isolated from her own culture.
28:26Hmm.
28:33One of the things that makes Udalok so interesting is that
28:35up until his heel-face turn,
28:36you understand why he wants the Northern and Southern Water Tribes to be unified as one nation.
28:40He thinks that we can do that.
29:07.
29:08.
29:09.
29:10.
29:11.
29:12.
29:13.
29:14.
29:15.
29:16.
29:17.
29:18.
29:19.
29:20.
29:21.
29:22.
29:23.
29:24.
29:25.
29:26.
29:27.
29:28.
29:29.
29:30.
29:31.
29:32.
29:33.
29:34.
29:35.
29:36.
29:37.
29:38.
29:39.
29:40.
29:41.
29:42.
29:43.
29:44.
29:45.
29:58Like having to pick a side simply because of the idea that they could be wrong.
30:02Or rather, lose, because one side is going to have to lose eventually.
30:06The internet loves to argue subjectivity all the time, but that's usually just because fans feel entitled to be agreed with.
30:12In a situation like this, someone would have to ideologically pick a side without the immediate reassurance of which side is the correct one.
30:19And in the middle of the season, they might pick the one that loses.
30:24So in true Korra fashion, after we have a random aside about the first avatar,
30:28we learn that the avatar spirit is a special little holy angel who has been locked in battle with its evil, horrible half-brother like two balls spawned in the afterlife.
30:37With its evil, horrible half-brother like two balls spawned in the afterlife.
30:47And then we learn that Unalaq has become Shadow Sarivok's avatar and is determined to drown the world in darkness because something something spirit world.
30:54Unalaq's desire for unity was a charade to get access to the Southern Spirit Portal in time for Harmonic Convergence.
31:00That's it.
31:01We spend the entire season in a pitched ideological battle where even the avatar herself doesn't know where she stands, and then suddenly it's just fucking Xehanort again.
31:11This season also introduced Varric, I should point out, a skeevy war profiteer who jumps onto the side of the rebellion after Unalaq threatens his business.
31:20And then tries to rob Asami's business blind.
31:24And a few seasons later, jumps right on board with developing a weapon of mass destruction.
31:28After this sudden swerve, he's suddenly treated like a silly little boy doing his silly little boy things.
31:33Oh hey, he said... Oh hey, he said do the thing. He's so funny and quirky and silly and adorkable.
31:40He has the blood of thousands on his hands.
31:44Oh man, he's in a platypus costume. He's so silly.
31:48He's enriching himself off the characters we actually like.
31:53In the final season, he jumps at the chance to make a giant death robot, the epitome of how unbelievably stupid the show can be when it forgets to establish the villain as a villain.
32:04And then suddenly has a change of heart at the last minute and we're expected to think Kuvira threatening to kill him is a bad thing?
32:11Now there's a voice in my head telling me to drop you on the tracks. That voice is me. Do it.
32:15That voice is me, Kuvira. Do it.
32:26Varric is actually one of the most opportunistic, duplicitous motherfuckers the series has,
32:30but outside of a few confrontations, he never gets elevated to villain status because of what he represents.
32:41Now, you know, back in the mid-2010s, it was common to romanticize the idea of an eccentric billionaire.
33:00Hell, Varric is literally just Tony Stark in drag.
33:13Tony Stark in boy drag, there we go. Literally just Tony Stark in boy drag.
33:23That is so jarring, and it's a fun kind of jarring.
33:27Tony Stark in boy drag, but I think we've all kind of learned what happens when you build a cult of personality around a billionaire.
33:33But you know, hindsight is 20-20, hindsight is 20-20, and we all know at this point,
33:40and we all know at this point, at this point, Varric isn't a quirky guy doing quirky guy things.
33:49Quirky guy things, guy things. He'll probably try to buy, he'll probably try to buy, try to buy the press.
33:58Press for 40 billion yuans.
34:04Yuans, because it was making fun of him.
34:09Varric would definitely build a fucking Cybertruck.
34:12Varric would definitely build cars to rival future industries, and they would all explode.
34:17Varric would definitely, Varric would definitely build cars, cars to rival future industries, and they would all explode.
34:26Industries, and they would all explode.
34:29Explode immediately.
34:31They would all explode.
34:33Explode immediately.
35:01Explode immediately.
35:31Explode immediately.
35:56Okay, sweater comes off, it is warm.
36:02And they both miss the point.
36:05The profiteer who's manipulating the main characters to support his propaganda films, yeah.
36:09And they would all explode, I mean, it's like, Varric would definitely build cars to rival future industries,
36:15and they would all explode immediately upon being bought.
36:17Hell, hell, he spends most of, hell, he spends a lot of the season, a lot of the season making propaganda films.
36:27Propaganda films, propaganda films that turn Unalaq into a literal racist caricature.
36:57Like, I didn't make that Ming the Merciless comparison light, uh, lightly.
37:13There's Ming the Merciless.
37:15Come on, give me a decent fucking, uh, there we go.
37:29And there's Unalaq in the fucking propaganda films.
37:40Right down to the fucking beard.
37:46Oh, wait, actually, you know, on reflection, I think he was deliberately evoking Ozai, who was also invoking Ming the Merciless.
38:04This is the Avatar equivalent of putting a Hitler mustache on someone you don't like.
38:15Hmm.
38:45Is that a white woman in the Avatar universe that got, uh, tied up? Hang on.
39:16I don't think so. Although, hmm.
39:27Well, that's this lady.
39:29Hmm.
39:52Propaganda films that turn Unalaq into a literal racist caricature. You know, aside from the other time they did that.
39:59It's like, why do you keep invoking, you know, aside from the other time?
40:02Which is actually, which is actually the second time, second time they did that, they did, they did that.
40:08What is it with you guys and Ming the Merciless? What is it with you guys and Ming the Merciless?
40:22Hmm.
40:25She looked white when being filmed in monochrome. Eh.
40:35I think her hair was dyed for the same reason that sets on black and white TV shows would be, like, pink.
40:51Hmm.
41:21Hmm.
41:51Hmm.
42:06Color in its absence being deliberately used in monochrome productions more frequently than you think. Yep.
42:14The Addams Family home was bright pink IRL. Yeah, I think they invoked the same thing when they were doing WandaVision.
42:22Hmm.
42:32Hmm.
42:33What is it with you guys and Ming the Merciless? What is it with you guys and Ming the Merciless?
42:39Okay, that's about it for now. Hmm.
42:43Okay, that's about it for now. Hmm.
42:44Okay, that's about it for now. Hmm.
43:02Maybe they were big Flash Gordon fans. No, they're invoking something. Hang on.
43:08They're invoking something specific. They always are.
43:19Hmm.
43:23The serial nature and overall look of Evil Unlocked deliberately invokes Ming the Merciless, a villain in the serial film Flash Gordon.
43:31Oh, yeah, it was Flash Gordon.
43:34Evil Unlocked is also reminiscent of the Ember Island player's portrayal of Fire Lord Ozai.
43:50Oh, yeah, also Nanook of the North.
43:57That's also what they were invoking.
44:02So, yeah, like everything else in Avatar, it's like a fucking hodgepodge of...
44:07It's this weird hodgepodge of crap.
44:31Hmm.
44:53What is it with you guys and Ming the Merciless?
45:01Hmm.
45:06I think this is about as much as I could do of this script before actually sitting down for a serious rewatch.
45:13So, I'm going to start doing those in streams from this point onward, but for now...
45:18?????????????
45:23??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
45:291 film is your main reference for designing Asian characters.
45:37Oh, hey, Lolo! Do you like the little puppet in the corner?
45:42Hmm.
45:47Also, would you like to join me?
45:52I miss hearing your voice.
45:59Yeah, sure.
46:17I'm just gonna transfer to my PC a minute.
46:42Okay.
46:43Literally casually put a good entire workday on stream.
46:46Yeah.
46:52I love how it's like...
46:54Oh.
46:55Oh, right, she's doing something.
46:57I love how it's like...
46:59I'll just... I'll have, like...
47:03I'll do, like, a four-hour stream, and then another four-hour stream, and then a three-hour stream,
47:07and then I won't stream for a while, and then it's like a fucking twelve-hour stream.
47:11And...
47:22Nearly eight and a half hours, my god.
47:24Yep.
47:26And most of that has been working.
47:28Ay!
47:31Now I'm gonna do something that isn't work.
47:33Also, welcome, Lolo.
47:35Thank... Thank you?
47:37Hmm.
47:40Oh, I keep on getting hair everywhere.
47:44That's what happens when you have fabulous hair.
47:47I can relate.
47:49Yeah.
48:10Hmm.
48:34Eh, sorry about that.
48:36Eh, it's alright.
48:55Sorry, can you hear me?
48:56Yeah, I can hear you.
48:58Oh, okay.
48:59I was just saying, how are you?
49:01Yeah, I'm alright. How are you?
49:04I had a bit of a rough sleep last night.
49:08Aw, poor hun.
49:26Well, I'd have to turn off the stream...
49:28Not Baldur's Gate, I'd have to turn off the stream elements to play Baldur's Gate,
49:31because I'd have to record it as well.
